3 THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD Leaving At one time or another in our life, we know we must take leave. We may leave a home, a job, a way of life. We leave because we believe something better lies ahead. We do not do this lightly. We leave with a tinge of sadness and a measure of hope. FIRST READING: Acts 1:1 11 RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Psalm 47:2 3, 6 7, 8 9 SECOND READING: Ephesians 1:17 23 GOSPEL: Matthew 28:16 20 Comment Only Mark and Luke speak directly about the ascension of Jesus. Mark gives us only a single line. Luke, on the other hand, is more expansive. He also recalls the Ascension narration in the opening of his second book of the Christian Scriptures the Acts of the Apostles. This second narration, taken from Acts, is our first reading today. Luke alone states that Jesus ascension occurred forty days after the Resurrection. As Jesus returns to the Father and thus disappears from their sight, the apostles remain riveted and absorbed. The angels have to bring them back to earth, so to speak. They address the apostles, Men of Galilee, why are you standing there? The words are reminiscent of the angels addressing the stunned women at the tomb on Easter morning: He is not here, for he has been raised, just as he said (Matthew 28:6). Today s Gospel proclamation is solemn and grave. Matthew s Gospel does not mention Jesus ascension. Rather, Matthew is concerned about handing on the mission of Jesus. The apostles offer homage; Jesus acknowledges this gesture by announcing that God, his Father, is the source of his authority. Jesus acts as one duly authorized to give the apostles the mission of teaching, baptizing, and carrying out all he had commanded. The questioning and anxious waiting, which are recorded in the first reading, are absent in today s Gospel proclamation. The whole of Jesus ministry is handed on to the eleven. Their mission is to reach the ends of the earth. They are assured that Jesus will be with them everywhere and always, right up to the end of time. Reflection The death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ, as well as the descent of the Holy Spirit, comprise the inseparable Paschal Mystery. We take each event in time, of course. We observe and honor one facet, then another throughout Triduum and the Easter season. Our celebration of the Ascension of the Lord focuses on Jesus necessary departure. The apostles had been warned, or reminded, I tell you the sober truth, it is much better for you that I go. If I fail to go, the Paraclete will never come to you, whereas if I go, I will send him to you (John 16:7). Jesus will no longer be present in the old, familiar way. He whom they have seen with their very own eyes, he whom they have touched will no longer be there. We can easily sympathize with the apostles. We can forgive them for staring up to heaven in awe, riveted to that place on earth, wishing this were not so. Or wishing they could join him. Or wishing he would return soon. But the apostles have a mission. They also have the assurance of Jesus presence with them to the very ends of the earth and until the end of all time. God has all space and all time covered, so to speak. For the apostles this is quite a stretch. They must tarry awhile on this earth. They must learn that though Jesus left them, he did not abandon them. He is wholly present. It is for them to receive and experience and know him in a new way. 4 FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora This weekend my sister and my first cousin and his wife will be arriving from the Philippines to attend the 25 th Anniversary of my Ordination. Seven of my relatives from the Zamora Family will be driving from Kansas, Missouri, also to attend the celebration. I wish to give them a warm welcome to our parish community. We all came from a small district in the province of Bohol in the Philippines occupied by The Zamora Families and most of the people living there, at least when I was growing up, were my relatives. That s why it was easy for me to become a priest, because all the beautiful girls were my relatives. Levity aside, I had so many relatives who prayed for me and are still praying for me. It s because of their prayers and yours too that I have reached 25 th years of priestly ministry, and still counting. I realized that in every parish, family and community The Tate Family is prominent. Do you know how many members of the Tate family belong to your family or church? There is old man Dic-Tate who wants to run everything, while Uncle Ro-Tate tries to change everything. There's sister Agi-Tate who stirs up plenty of trouble, with help from her husband, Irri-Tate. Whenever new projects are suggested, Hesi-Tate and his wife, Vege- Tate, want to wait until next year. Then there is Aunt Imi-Tate, who wants our church to be like all the others. Devas-Tate provides the voice of doom, while Poten-Tate wants to be a big shot. But not all members of the family are bad. Brother Facili-Tate is quite helpful in church matters. And a delightful, happy member of the family is Miss Felici- Tate. Cousins Cogi-Tate and Medi-Tate always think things over and lend helpful, steady hands. And of course there is the black sheep of the family, Ampu-Tate, who has completely cut himself off from the church. How about it - do you know anyone in the "Tate" family? The Zamora Family is nothing compared to the Tate Family. The Zamoras just live in a teeny district of a tiny island of a small country. The Tate Family, however, lives almost everywhere and in America they united themselves and are not simply called The Tate Family, but now The United states of America! I would like to give a big THANK YOU to all who helped and supported our double celebration of my anniversary and the Philippine Madrigal Singers concert this week. LIFT UP YOUR HEARTS! Preparation for the revised Roman Missal, third typical edition by Jerry Back The high point within the Liturgy of the Word may arguably be the reading of the Gospel. Do you ever feel a strong sense of anticipation right before the Gospel reading? When the piano starts playing and the choir starts singing Alleluia, there s a feeling of gladness because I know I m about to hear Jesus speaking to me, teaching to me. Question: What distinguishes the Gospels from other books in Sacred Scripture? Answer from the Archdiocese of San Francisco: Do you have in your mind a collection of words to live by? Many of us do. Many Christians little collections will no doubt include quotes from one or more of the Gospels. The Church as a whole and individual Christians revere the Gospels of Jesus Christ. They hold a special place in the Church s Tradition. In the Church s worship, when the Gospel is proclaimed, we hear the voice of Christ. The introduction to the Book of the Gospels tells us, While the whole corpus of the Scriptures is venerated by the Church as the word of God, the Gospels have always been proclaimed as the very voice of her Bridegroom. It s no surprise, then, that we give special honor to the Book of the Gospels, a liturgical book that contains all of the Gospel texts from the Lectionary for Mass for Sundays, feast days and ritual masses. As the deacon or priest takes the Book of the Gospels from the altar, we honor it by accompanying it to the ambo with incense, candles and singing the Alleluia or, during Lent, one of the seasonal acclamations. The procession and our accompanying song are the way that we embody the reverence for the Gospel that we hold in our minds and hearts REMEMBERING the WORD of GOD Be doers of the word and not hearers only. James 1: There are many emotions felt during the Holy Mass. That moment before the Gospel is read is certainly for me one of joyful anticipation. To have the priest or deacon visibly praise the Gospel and to have this moment accentuated by music and song should help us all prepare our hearts before receiving the words of our Lord.
