3 FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora Christmas is indeed just around the corner. I can t remember the last time I actually cut a Christmas tree. Now we either just buy them in the store or use artificial ones. We don t need to cut Christmas trees. What is important is to cut our selfishness and pride to better prepared for the coming of the kingly yet lowly Child. Just before the Blessed Mother was about to give birth to the Baby Jesus, God the Father sent an angel to earth to search for the right animals that could assist the Holy Family in Bethlehem. The first place that the angel went to was the forest where he met a lion and a fox. I need animals to help the Holy Family, for the Lord Jesus is to be born, the angel told the beasts. What can you two do? he asked. I will guard the Holy Family so that no one can harm them. With my claws and fangs, I will shred to pieces anyone who goes any nearer to them, said the lion. Oh my, said the horrified angel, you are not only too powerful; you are very violent too. Thanks anyway. The fox stepped forward and said, I volunteer to help them, angel. And what how will you do so? asked the angel. I will see to it that the Holy Family will not starve, said the fox. Hmmm sounds very practical. And how do you plan to do that? inquired the angel. The fox replied, I will sneak into the neighbors barns every night and steal their chickens for the Holy Family so that Mary, Joseph, and the Baby can eat well everyday. Oh, no, the angel said sadly, you can t feed the Holy Family with something stolen from others. You are rather sly. I m sorry, you do not qualify. The angel s next stop was a barn where he met a peacock, a donkey, and an ox. He informed them about what brought him there. The peacock said, Did you say, the Baby is to be born in a stable? Very well then, I will spread my beautiful tail and make the stable look more enchanting than Solomon s palace or even more than the Temple in Jerusalem. You re quite vain, Mr. Peacock. Sorry, but you re not the one I need. said the angel. Too shy to volunteer themselves, the donkey and the ox were asked by the angel to step forward. Is there anything you can offer? asked the angel. Nothing, chorused the two. I spend my days carrying loads on my back and there seems to be nothing that I learn from doing so except some patience and humility, said the donkey. I do almost the same thing everyday that my friend here, Mr. Donkey, does, but he forgot to mention that we also always swing our tails to keep flies away, the ox added. Aha, that s perfect! Please hurry and go to Bethlehem. You are badly needed there, said the angel to the donkey and the ox. Now, we know why there is no lion, no fox, and no peacock in the nativity scene. The amazing name Emmanuel was first uttered by Isaiah as he described to the frightened King Ahaz the promised one who would come to redeem the people. It means God is with us. God is entrusted to the care of a virgin, who will bear this child. Only God would be so compassionate to draw so near, to be so available and vulnerable. Only God could love this well. Answer from Sacrosanctum Concilium: Both the ceremonies and texts of the ordination rites are to be revised. The address given by the bishop at the beginning of each ordination or consecration may be in the mother tongue (Editor s note: the locally-used language). When a bishop is consecrated, the laying of hands may be done by all the bishops present. The marriage rite now found in the Roman Ritual is to be revised and enriched in such a way that the grace of the sacrament is more clearly signified and the duties of the spouses are taught. If any regions are wont to use other praiseworthy customs and ceremonies when celebrating the sacrament of matrimony, the sacred Synod earnestly desires that these by all means be retained. Moreover the competent territorial ecclesiastical authority mentioned in Articles 22 and 52, of this Constitution is free to draw up its own rite suited to the usages of place and people, according to the provision of Article 63. But the rite must always conform to the law that the priest assisting at the marriage must ask for and obtain the consent of the contracting parties. Matrimony is normally to be celebrated within the Mass, after the reading of the gospel and the homily, and before "the prayer of the faithful." The prayer for the bride, duly amended to remind both spouses of their equal obligation to remain faithful to each other, may be said in the mother tongue. But if the sacrament of matrimony is celebrated apart from Mass, the epistle and gospel from the nuptial Mass are to be read at the beginning of the rite, and the blessing should always be given to the spouses. Editor s Note: Sacrosanctum Concilium (the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy) has as its central aim a focus on greater participation of the laity in the liturgy. We are now reviewing the constitution s third chapter, The Other Sacraments and Sacramentals. Future chapters in Sacrosanctum Concilium will look at "The Divine Office," "The Liturgical Year," "Sacred Music," and "Sacred Art." 4 4th Sunday of Advent Matthew 1: And you shall name him Jesus The sullen skies darkened over the town of Nazareth and it looked like a morning rain was coming. Joseph peered up at the clouds and ducked inside his little shop. He opened the shutters and soft light spilled over his familiar tools and tables. There was a feeling of peacefulness and safety in his predictable routine. Here he could try to make some sense of all that was happening to him. In his shop Joseph could lose himself in work and not have to face the realities of Mary and last night s frightening visions. Joseph picked up a timber he was shaping and locked it in place with wedges. He began to chop and scrape against the wood with his sharp adze. Shavings of wood sliced away and dropped in curls at his feet. The news that Mary was pregnant had crushed Joseph. As he cut, he raged over the insult and humiliation that Mary had been intimate with someone else while betrothed to him. Thoughts of writing a divorce paper would mean confronting the embarrassing family arrangements, both financial and emotional. Joseph s honor and life were ruined. What had once been his love for Mary was changing into hatred. In addition to his heartache over Mary, Joseph now faced the enormous problem of last night s visions. He d awakened to a room filled with light. Thinking it was morning, Joseph tried to get out of bed and came face to face with someone floating in front of him. The bright figure was in the air, smiling down at him. Joseph stared in disbelief. Then the angel figure s unspoken words sprang clearly into Joseph s ears: Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For it is by the Holy Spirit that she has conceived. Like a madman, terror went crashing through Joseph s mind. He tried to flee, thrashing in his blankets as the angel figure continued to smile. The angel s eyes spoke again: She will have a son and you will name him Jesus because he will save his people from their sins. This time Joseph lurched to his feet, his blankets falling away as the strange light dissolved into darkness. Breathing hard, Joseph groped his way outside and stood under the starless sky. It had all been too real to be a dream. Joseph was cutting too deeply into the timber. He stopped. Mary s sweet face rose in his memory and Joseph realized she could never have dishonored him. The message from the angel must be true! Putting his adze aside, he dropped the window shutter on his shop and stepped outside into the light rain. He began to walk in the direction of Mary s house. All rights reserved. As he went, Joseph bolstered his resolve, I will believe that it is by the Holy Spirit that she has conceived. I place myself in Yahweh s care. Eagerly, he hurried to her. The rain was coming harder. Mary was standing in her doorway when she saw him. With a soaring heart she ran up the rocky path. They embraced, standing a long time in the rain. A roll of thunder sounded in the mountains. Little Mary looked up at Joseph and whispered, You will name him Jesus. It was Joseph s final assurance that the dream was real. Mary s face was all wet and between them they were holding God in their love. Overwhelmed, Joseph s tears ran unnoticed with the rain. V The test of our faith comes when, like Joseph, we are able to follow God against all earthly reasons. By taking Mary, Joseph faced ridicule from his family, friends and neighbors. Only his faith in God could give him assurance that Mary was a virgin. It is an inspiring image of strength and faith as we see the future earthly father of Jesus choose to follow God despite everything.

TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS Just a week before Christmas I had a visitor. This is how it happened. I just finished the household chores for the night and was preparing for bed, when I heard a noise in the front of the house. I opened the door to the front room and to my surprise, Santa himself stepped out next to the fireplace. What are you doing? I started to ask. The words choked up in my throat and I saw he had tears in his eyes. His usual jolly manner was gone. Gone was the eager, boisterous soul we all know. He then answered me with a simple statement TEACH THE CHILDREN I was puzzled. What did he mean? He anticipated my question and with one quick movement brought forth a miniature toy bag from behind the tree. As a stood bewildered, Santa said, TEACH THE CHIL- DREN. Teach them the old meaning of Christmas. The meaning that now-a-days Christmas has forgotten. Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a FIR TREE and placed it before the mantle. Teach the children that the pure green gold of the stately fir tree remains green all year round, depicting the everlasting hope of mankind, all the needles point heavenward, making it a symbol of man s thoughts turning toward heaven. He again reached into his bag and pulled out a brilliant STAR. Teach the children that he star was the heavenly sign of promises long ago. God promised a Savior for the world, and the star was the sign of fulfillment of His promise. He then reached into his bag and pulled out a CANDLE. Teach the children that the candle symbolizes that Christ is the light of the world, and when we see this great light we are reminded of He who displaces the darkness. Once again he reached into his bag and removed a WREATH and placed it on the tree. Teach the children that the wreath symbolizes the real nature of love. Real love never ceases. Love is one continuous round of affection. He then pulled from his bag an ORNAMENT of himself. Teach the children that I, Santa Claus, symbolize the generosity and good will we feel during the month of December. He then brought out a HOLLY LEAF. Teach the children that the holly plant represents immortality. It represents the crown of thorns worn by our Savior. The red holly berries represent the blood shed by Him. Next he pulled from his bag a GIFT and said, Teach the children that God so loved the world that he gave His begotten son, Thanks be to God for his unspeakable gift. Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a CANDY CANE and hung it on the tree. Teach the children that the candy cane represents the shepherd s crook. The crook on the staff helps to bring back strayed sheep to the flock. The candy cane is the symbol that we are our brother s keeper. He reached in again and pulled out an ANGEL. Teach the children that it was the angels that heralded in the glorious news of the Savior s birth. The angels sang Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peach and good will toward men. Suddenly I heard the twinkling sound, and from his bag he pulled put a BELL. Teach the children that as the lost sheep are found by the sound of the bell, it should ring mankind to the fold. The bell symbolizes guidance and return. Santa looked back and was pleased. He looked back at me and I saw that the twinkle was back in his eyes. He said, Remember, teach the children the true meaning of Christmas and do not put me in the center, for I am but a humble servant of the One that is, and I bow down to worship Him, our Lord, our God. Merry Christmas!
