We provide comfort and aid to persons who come to the Pastoral Center seeking assistance with food, shelter, clothing or travel needs. We provide financial help to SVDP programs and other conferences dealing directly with persons in need. Through the SVDP twinning program we also provide financial assistance to SVDP conferences in the Philippines and Holy Land. As Fr. Zamora recently mentioned in this column, Lent is a time for prayer, fasting and almsgiving. This being Lent it is a wonderful opportunity for us to practice almsgiving and being generous in our 5th Sunday collection. Thanks again for supporting our 5th Sunday collections. You are remembered in our prayers at our weekly meetings. Please use your SVDP envelope in the second collection next Sunday. God does not ask us for our ability or our inability, but our availability. 4 FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora We welcome our Holy Name students and their parents this Sunday at 9:30AM for our school mass. We especially thank our 6 th graders for leading us in this particular liturgy. Last week, we had a funeral liturgy for two of our parishioners who recently passed away: Alice Fiumara and Theresa Byrne. Both ladies were long time parishioners, school parents and parish volunteers. Alice was a graduate from Holy Name School, in the first graduating class, and Mothers Guild President. Theresa was a Girl Scout Leader and coordinator of our Homebound Communion calls for many years. I had the opportunity to see each one a few days before they died and both were ready to meet their Creator. They were blessed with long life and were able to prepare themselves for the blessed assurance of eternal life. I almost had a death experience myself last Tuesday, in a car accident. Coming off 280 at 19 th Avenue is a dangerous spot. A cab hit the rear end of my car causing it to hit another car on the left side. The collision sent me jumping the curve and straight onto the streetcar tracks. Magically, I managed to go back on the road, flying over the foot tall curb again. The hand of God was upon me. All three drivers involved in the accident were all safe. All heads were cool and no finger pointing as to who was at fault. The first thing that came to our mouths was to say to each other: Are you okay? I remember my old pastor who asked my cousin to pick up something from the store using the pastor s motorcycle. My cousin came home without the motorcycle and reported: Father, I had a motorcycle accident! My pastor s first response was: What about my motorcycle? I still have my car but it is severely damaged, just like my old pastor s motorcycle. The whole world is still wondering where Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 is right now. We still don t know what happened to the plane and more importantly, the passengers. Finding Nemo was a movie about a fish that was lost. Should there be a movie entitled Finding Flight 370 for a plane that was lost? We still have much to pray for, especially for the safety of the passengers. The National Transportation Safety Board recently divulged a highly secret plan they had funded with the US auto makers for the past five years. The NTSB covertly funded a project whereby the auto makers were installing black boxes in four wheel drive pick-up trucks in an effort to determine, in fatal accidents, the circumstances in the last 15 seconds before the crash. They were surprised to find in 49 of the 50 states the last words of drivers in 61.2% of fatal crashes were, " Oh Crap!" Only the deep South was different, where 89.3% of the final words were, " Hey y all, watch this!" The Second Vatican Council: A 50th Anniversary Retrospective By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back Question: Who helps artists better understand the purpose of sacred art? Answer from Sacrosanctum Concilium: Bishops should have a special concern for artists, so as to imbue them with the spirit of sacred art and of the sacred liturgy. This they may do in person or through suitable priests who are gifted with a knowledge and love of art. It is also desirable that schools or academies of sacred art should be founded in those parts of the world where they would be useful, so that artists may be trained. All artists who, prompted by their talents, desire to serve God's glory in holy Church, should ever bear in mind that they are engaged in a kind of sacred imitation of God the Creator, and are concerned with works destined to be used in Catholic worship, to edify the faithful, and to foster their piety and their religious formation. Question: When ideally would the Church's bishops, priests, and deacons learn about sacred art? Answer from Sacrosanctum Concilium: During their philosophical and theological studies, clerics are to be taught about the history and development of sacred art, and about the sound principles governing the production of its works. In consequence they will be able to appreciate and preserve the Church's venerable monuments, and be in a position to aid, by good advice, artists who are engaged in producing works of art. Editor s Note: Sacrosanctum Concilium (the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy) has as its central aim a focus on greater participation of the laity in the liturgy. We have now finished reviewing the constitution s final chapter, Sacred Art. CATHOLIC CHARITIES CYO Lenten Volunteer Opportunities Catholic Charities CYO is offering a variety of ways to strengthen our faith through acts of compassion during the six weeks of the Lenten Season through volunteer acts of kindness. 5 Catholic Bishops Call for Lenten Prayer and Fasting During Time of Drought Bishop Jaime Soto, President of the California Catholic Conference of Bishops, released the following statement: During this Season of Lent, we, the Catholic Bishops of California, invite the Catholic community and other Californians of good will to exercise restraint in the use of water as an expression of solidarity with those whose livelihood and welfare are at risk due to extreme drought conditions. Lent is a holy, penitential season in the Catholic Church's liturgical year, reflecting the forty days Jesus spent in the desert in fasting and prayer. In this time, Catholics unite themselves with the Lord Jesus in the struggle to overcome the power of evil and the slavery of sin. We do so with prayer, fasting, abstinence, as well as other penitential sacrifices, and charitable works. This year, Californians are in an actual desert as an historic drought looms over us. Farmers cannot access sufficient water to raise their crops. Fields will remain fallow. Men and women will be left standing without work. Access for children and families to clean, drinkable water is uncertain. Legislators struggle to craft an equitable public policy ensuring the State s present and future water needs. We are starkly reminded in this time of drought of our dependence on the Creator. The fragile relationship between ourselves and the creation that God has made to sustain us is threatened. Our human dignity relies on access to water. That same human dignity is diminished when we let this precious resource slip carelessly through our hands. The creation entrusted to us is a common heritage and requires us to work together as responsible stewards for the common good, especially mindful of the weak and vulnerable. As the economic and health impact of the drought grows those with limited resources will be the first to suffer. Wise conservation practices will mitigate those effects. They also serve as concrete acts of solidarity giving life and hope to other fellow Californians. During this Lent, we pray that God opens the heavens and lets His mercy rain down upon our fields and mountains. May we receive the grace to better conserve our natural resources and expend our energies in works of charity so that justice and mutual respect may flow like a river through the cities, towns and fields of our State. Looking towards the sacred days of Easter, we hope that God s wisdom and joy may rise like a fountain of living water in the hearts and minds of all Californians. 3rd Sunday in Lent John 4: 5-42 Living water A slender Samaritan woman approached the well with her empty water jar. She began to lower the roped bucket into the well. Jesus watched and remembered how thirsty he was. His dry lips opened and he called to her: Give me a drink. The woman brushed her hair away from her face and looked up at the foreigner sitting nearby. She studied him for a long moment and then decided he must be a Jew. Jesus smiled at her. He got to his feet and walked over to the well, standing before her and the brimming bucket of cold water. You are a Jew, she announced, raising her face to look up at Jesus. She dipped her cup into the water and held it out to him. I am a Samaritan. How can you ask me for a drink? HOLY NAME NEWSLETTER March 18, 2014 PRINCIPAL S LETTER Dear Holy Name Families, This Sunday, March 23rd,is our Family Mass sponsored by the 6th grade students and families. Please join us at 9:30 as we celebrate this Mass together. Next week on Wednesday, March 26th, we'll have Lenten Reconciliation services for students in grades 2 through 8. Our Catholic students have the opportunity twice during the school year to receive this sacrament. This service comes in the middle of the Lenten season and is a good reminder that we should be doing something special as we prepare for the death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. He paused for a moment and then put his lips on the cup and drank all of the water. The Samaritan woman stared in disbelief. Handing the cup back to her, Jesus began to explain. In the moments that followed the Samaritan woman would learn that Jesus was the awaited Messiah, the one who had come to bring everyone living water a water which would become a gushing fountain with waters leaping up to provide eternal life. Jesus encounter with the Samaritan woman at Jacob s Well lets us hear him declare that he is the anointed one who is coming...the Messiah! Jesus says to her I who speak to you am he. Through the Gospel which we read and hear this day, Jesus also addresses those words to us. I who speak to you am he. Jesus also brings to us living water which will spring forth into our lives and provide us with the gift of eternal life.
