2 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November 25, 2018 Jesus Christ is the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead and ruler of the kings of the earth. Second Reading Jesus Christ is the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead (Revelation 1:5-8). Gospel For this I came into the world, to testify to the truth (John 18:33b-37). But his kingship is unlike any other kingship we have ever witnessed or known about. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the one who is and who is to come. Reflect: If we can truly believe in the Kingship of Christ, that his Kingdom shall never end or be overcome, nothing shall prevent us from declaring our allegiance to him and work for his Kingdom, even when it feels like darkness in filling up all around us and the world seems to have cast away the Gospel. At the end of it all, Christ and his Gospel triumphs. Our task is to put our head down and work for our King, no matter what. Pray: Lord, may your Kingdom come! From: Fr. Von Giese We pray for those who have Died that they may be granted a home in heaven. Reflection: What are we to make of the famous reply of Jesus to Pilate: My kingdom is not of this world? Left there, it sounds as though Jesus is talking about a realm which is far removed from terrestrial concerns. Perhaps our task as his followers is to meditate into a blissful nothingness, to live other-worldy lives? It is a poor translation, and it should read: My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would have fought to stop my being handed over. Of all the ways in which our Lord could have contrasted his realm with all the other ways in which societies are ruled, he chose a contrast about the use of force. Rather, his reign springs from his Father s will that humanity should live together in a realm of non-violence. We can easily criticize ISIL s blasphemous use of barbaric violence in the supposed service of religion. It is the most extreme opposite of Our Lord s teaching which He embodied in his practice. But, even for us, the challenge is there to restrain too-ready resort to armed violence and to humanely moderate its exercise where it is used to protect the innocent. We could pause for a moment to pray for the coming of the Kingdom, not as an out of this world experience, but in the words of the Our Father: Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

3 FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora Christus vincit! Christus regnat! Christus imperat! Happy Feast of Christ the King! Christus vincit, regnat, imperat; ab omni malo plemem suam defendat. Translated as Christ conquers, He reigns, He commands. May He de-fend His people from all evil. Pope Sixtus V had these words engraved on the obelisk which stands in the center of Saint Peter s Square at Rome. These magnificent words are written in the present tense to indicate that Christ s triumph is always actual, and that it is brought about in the Eucharist and by the Eucharist. The Eucharist is usually celebrated through the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass which is the source and summit of our Christian life. But the Eucharist is also celebrated through Eucharistic Adoration or the Exposition, Adoration and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament that we been doing in the parish every Wednesday after the 9:00AM mass until 12:00 Noon and every First Friday of the month from the 9:00 AM mass until 10:30 AM. We have a survey going on right now of whether our current schedule of Eucharistic Adoration is working well for our parishioners or if there is a need for additional hours to be opened to accommodate students and working parishioners. Please find our Survey form below and fill it out. We look forward to hear your response. I am also excited to announce to you that on this Feast of Christ the King, we will have our first ever Parish Thanksgiving Meal right after the 11:30 AM Mass. There are so many reasons to celebrate and to be thankful for on this day. We celebrate, of course, the Feast of Christ the King, and the last Sunday of the Liturgical Year (B). We also thank you for living a Stewardship way of life of giving your time, talent and treasure to the church. To make this Parish Thanksgiving Meal special, memorial and especially meaningful, we will be delivering a special meal to our homebound and sick parishioners directly to their homes. It is a great gesture that we care for them, we are one and that they are not alone and they have a family at Holy Name. A man was picking through the frozen turkeys at the grocery store for Thanksgiving Day, but couldn t find one big enough for her family. He asked a stock boy, Do these turkeys get any bigger? No, sir! They re dead. Everyday, we have so much to be thankful for. We may not have everything, but at least, we NEVER have nothing... GOD is alive in us. God reigns. God is with us always! May all your prayers be answered and may you feel the LORD's presence near you, not only today but always. page 3 Dear Holy Name Parishioners, I have always been a firm believer that a school can only be as successful as the strength of its faculty and staff. This was confirmed earlier this year when we were told at a professional development meeting that research shows that the number one predictor of a school s success, and therefore a child s academic experience, is the faculty. At Holy Name we are blessed with what I believe is the best faculty in the Bay Area. And I truly believe this to my core. All that the school is and has become is a true testament to the faculty and staff of Holy Name and their desire to constantly do what is best for the students. I have never met a faculty so determined to offer their students more and so committed to their own professional growth. Working with our faculty and staff and our families has honestly been the greatest professional and personal experience of my career, which is why it is so difficult for me to share that I will not be returning for the school year. Many of you know that my husband and I hope to be parents one day, and as a result we have been discussing since last year how my being closer to home would allow us to be more successful as new parents whenever that time should come. As a result of these ongoing conversations I decided to apply to some positions that would allow me to be more present with my family. During this process I was blessed to be offered the Head of School position at Mercy High School, Burlingame, which is my alma mater, and I truly believe it was a sign for me to be closer to home. Though it breaks my heart to know I have to say goodbye as your principal this summer, I know that all our Holy Name families are in the best hands possible. I look forward to the rest of the school year, and I remain committed to being the best possible principal I can be for Holy Name and your children. Please know that Father Arnold will be working with the Archdiocese of San Francisco s Department of Catholic Schools to create a timeline for the hiring process as well as a hiring committee. Thank you for this wonderful adventure that I look forward to continuing this year and that I will always hold close to my heart. With much love, Natalie CUT HERE WEDNESDAY EUCHARIST ADORATION SURVEY: I m in favor of keeping the current schedule after the 9AM Mass until Noon. Aside from the morning Adoration schedule, I would like to have an afternoon schedule from 5-7PM. I m in favor of having a whole day adoration after the 9:00 Mass until 7 PM: I will commit to do adoration at (specify time) PLEASE DROP OFF YOUR ADORATION SURVEY FORM IN THE BASKET AS YOU ENTER THE CHAPEL IN THE PASTORAL CENTER

4 FAITH FORMATION CATECHESIS PASTORAL OUTREACH Director: Sr. Cristina Ovejera, FdCC (415) REFLECTION: How can I repay the Lord for His goodness to me? One way to acknowledge God s gifts is in words, whether written or spoken. But more is required: we must nurture the gifts given, become the gift. This is the point of every Eucharist, our central moment of thanksgiving. We gather as a community to express our gratitude for the mysteries of creation, redemption, and sanctification. In the Eucharist we break open the Scriptures and come to know Jesus as we break the bread. We than share what we have received in Word and Sacrament. -Bishop Robert F. Morneau Thank You Very Much Our heartfelt gratitude to the coordinators of parish ministries who put up the exhibits in the church these past two weekends. They responded generously even with such a short notice. That is what Stewardship is all about. Thanks, especially, to Carl Vengco, Ricky Inting, Sylvia King, for arranging the displays in an attractive way complete with red tablecloths (courtesy of Tony & Linda Sideco) and colorful balloons. We noticed a good number of parishioners taking time to look at the exhibits. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful; enkindle in them the fire of your love, and they shall be created. And you shall renew the face of the earth! Advent Giving Trees It is that time of the year again! On the week of Thanksgiving, our Church Environment Committee will put up the traditional Advent trees at the back of the church. We will fill them with gift tags, each with a wish from the clients of our city s Pomeroy Center. Once again, we ask parishioners to participate in this Advent practice of sharing your treasures with those in need. Thank you in advance for always supporting this outreach program of Holy Name of Jesus. Members of Holy Name Ladies Aid Association will check tags taken at every Mass. We will begin on the Giving Tree Program on Thanksgiving Day, November 22 nd. Thank you for your continuing support of this outreach program. Lay Canossians Hosting Quarterly Homebound/Seniors Mass The Homebound/Seniors Mass will be on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at 1:30 PM in the Flanagan Center. At this Mass we will also celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. We will pray the Rosary before Mass. The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be given within the Mass. There will be a simple reception immediately after Mass. Building Bridges of Hope is the main theme of this year s Santa Clara Faith Formation Conference. It will be held on Friday, November 29 and Saturday, December 1, 2018, at the Santa Clara Convention Center. For more information, visit HOLY NAME Youth Ministry Forthcoming Activities: Saturday, December 15, 2018 Mass at 5:00 PM Prepare care packages for the poor Faith sharing groups on Advent. For further information about Holy Name Youth Ministry, please ask any of the following people on the team: Julie Quock, Erin Grogan, Justina Quock, Alejandra Brito and Sr. Cristina. page 4 Religious Education Teachers, Students and Parents are expected to be at the 9:30 AM Mass every Sunday. Please occupy the reserved pews in front of the ambo (podium), left side facing the sanctuary. It is important for everyone to be present, especially to the students preparing for First Holy Communion and Confirmation. Thank you for your cooperation in the Christian formation of your children. Beginning this Pastoral Year, Religious Education students will not join Holy Name School celebration of First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, Youth Confirmation. They need more time of sacramental preparation, because they just come to catechism classes once a week. We are looking at having the sacraments at later dates. We thank Religious Education teachers for helping us in discernment about this important matter. Thank you for your understanding. Join Us! MASS FOR THE HOMEBOUND/SENIORS with Anointing of the Sick Saturday, December 8, :30 PM (Please arrive by 1:15 PM) Flanagan Center (underneath the Church) on 39th Ave. and Lawton St. RECEPTION IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWS MASS Rides are available if needed or if you need further information please call: Susan Logan: (415) Sue Yee: (415) Commit to Stewardship Today! God is the Creator and provider of all we are and have; He is the source of all love and mercy. Through the gift of His son Jesus Christ, He has provided for us the sure hope of eternity with him. Through the Holy Spirit, He calls us and gathers us into His church. How can we respond to this great love of our Father and use all his gifts to us for his glory? God is totally committed to us. Are you willing to make a commitment to him? Please say yes by turning in your Stewardship Renewal form. You may put it in the offertory basket at Mass or mail it to the parish office.
