3 FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora It s a new month, the third of the year. January and February have gone so quickly and here comes March and we are marching quickly with all the activities, parish and school events, coming up. Let me first congratulate our Holy Name School second graders as they receive the Body of Christ for the first time in the Sacrament of Holy Communion this weekend. We welcome also those who are noncatholics, receiving a special blessing in the mass. They are one with their classmates and they are one with us, as we are one people in the Mystical Body of Christ. It s our 65th Annual St. Patrick s Dinner this weekend too. It has been a tradition in our parish to have our St. Patrick s Dinner on the first Saturday of March. This year we are adding hotdogs for children who are still learning how to like corn beef and cabbage. The St. Patrick s Dinner has always been a good opportunity to reconnect with old friends, or just for having a fun time at a social session. But the old advice still stands: Party and drink with moderation. Reminds me of a man who tells this story: As you may know some of us have been known to have brushes with the authorities from time to time on the way home after a "social session" out with friends. Well, two days ago I was out for an evening with friends and had several cocktails followed by some rather nice red wine. Feeling jolly I still had the sense to know that I may be slightly over the limit. That's when I did something that I've never done before - I took a cab home. Sure enough on the way home there was a police road block, but since it was a cab they waved it past. I arrived home safely without incident. This was a real surprise as I had never driven a cab before, I don't know where I got it and now that it's in my garage I don't know what to do with it. Answer from Sacrosanctum Concilium: Very rightly the fine arts are considered to rank among the noblest activities of man's genius, and this applies especially to religious art and to its highest achievement, which is sacred art. These arts, by their very nature, are oriented toward the infinite beauty of God which they attempt in some way to portray by the work of human hands; they achieve their purpose of redounding to God's praise and glory in proportion as they are directed the more exclusively to the single aim of turning men's minds devoutly toward God. Question: What institution determines which art may be considered sacred art? Answer from Sacrosanctum Concilium: Holy Mother Church has therefore always been the friend of the fine arts and has ever sought their noble help, with the special aim that all things set apart for use in divine worship should be truly worthy, becoming, and beautiful, signs and symbols of the supernatural world, and for this purpose she has trained artists. In fact, the Church has, with good reason, always reserved to herself the right to pass judgment upon the arts, deciding which of the works of artists are in accordance with faith, piety, and cherished traditional laws, and thereby fitted for sacred use. Editor s Note: Sacrosanctum Concilium (the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy) has as its central aim a focus on greater participation of the laity in the liturgy. A parish-based ministry to support pregnant mothers and their unborn children: History of the Gabriel Project: In 1973 the pastor of St. Michael Parish in Houston, put a sign outside his church which conveyed the parish s commitment to provide immediate practical help to mothers with unplanned pregnancies who come to them for aid. That was the seed of The Gabriel Project. In 1990/91 it was developed throughout the Corpus Christi and Galveston- Houston dioceses. It has since spread throughout the country and has merited the enthusiastic endorsement of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops: Begin a parish-based ministry to pregnant women and their children. The Gabriel Project, developed in the Diocese of Galveston-Houston, is excellent and is spreading across the nation. Volunteers in the parish are trained to help a woman through her pregnancy with practical assistance, spiritual and emotional guidance, and help in accessing needed services. (USCCB) The Gabriel Project answers this call. It embodies the practical support that the bishops promise pregnant women. Your Help is Needed: The participation of many parishes is critical to the success of our Archdiocesan outreach to pregnant mothers in need. The easier it is for parishes to participate, the better. To this end, printed materials, training of parish volunteers, the central toll-free helpline, and overall project coordination are provided to parishes at no cost. The Gabriel Project is a marvelous way to show the community that your parish cares about pregnant mothers in need and that there is no reason for any mother within its boundaries to feel that she is helpless and alone. There will be an informational meeting about the Gabriel Project on Monday, March 3, at 7:00 PM in the Pastoral Center. Fredi D'Alessio, the Coordinator of TGP, will be at the meeting to present the Gabriel Project. A volunteer orientation session will follow if any of the attendees desire to become GP angels. HOLY NAME TREE OF LIFE The Holy Name Tree of Life, a bronze tree trunk with approximately 400 leaves is located at the back of the Church. Donors can have their names, or those they wish to honor, engraved on the leaf. The proceeds of the donations to the Tree of Life will go towards a much-needed Capital Improvement Fund. Each leaf costs $500 with a $25.00 engraving charge. We suggest setting a MAXIMUM number of characters per leaf to 5 lines, 25 characters per line including spaces. Sincerely, Mrs. Judy Cosmos LENTEN REGULATIONS: ABSTINENCE: Everyone fourteen years of age and older is bound to abstain from meat on ASH WEDNESDAY, the FRIDAYS of Lent and GOOD FRIDAY. FAST: Everyone eighteen years of age and older but under the age of sixty is also bound to fast on ASH WEDNESDAY and GOOD FRIDAY. On these two days, the law of fast allows only one full meal a day, but does not prohibit taking some food during the day, so long as this does not constitute another full meal. Drinking liquids during the day is permitted. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. In doubt concerning fast or abstinence, a priest assigned to pastoral ministry or confessor should be consulted. In the spirit of penance, the faithful should not lightly excuse themselves from this obligation. REFLECTING ON GOD S WORD I am writing this in the aftermath of the earthquake that shattered Haiti in January of The devastation was beyond words. Yet even in the face of this tragic event, an evening news program two nights after the earthquake had footage of a large group in Port au Prince lifting their voices and hands in prayer, praising God. This radical faith in God is what Jesus calls his disciples to have. The Father did not intervene to save his Son from death, but neither did he allow death to have the final word. He raised his Son from the dead. This saving death has remained the sign above all signs that God wills us to have eternal life. It can seem impossible at times not to worry about tomorrow. But Jesus assures us that the Father does not abandon us ever! We are all called to be stewards of the mysteries of the faith that is centered in the person and saving death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We are to hand on what has been handed down to us: that Jesus is God s only Son, who suffered and died and was raised for our salvation, and by our baptism we are brought into this mystery of living, dying, and rising in Christ.
