3 FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora A big crowd gathered at the church last week for the Memorial Mass for our parishioner Winifred Downing and a good crowd attended the reception at the Janet Pomeroy Center. It was a great tribute to a wonderful and amazing person. I did not have a chance to witness her in her prime years, actively participating in the school and church activities, helping her kids with homework, serving as a Lector at church, traveling around the world, and so many other things, despite her blindness. Yet, I was privileged to witness her great faith, privileged to worship with her. She was a pillar, a cornerstone of faith and inspiration to us all. Much more, just few days before she passed away, Bishop Wang and I went to see her and I was privileged to give her the Sacrament of the Anointing. I imagine the choir of angels singing and rejoicing to welcome her to Heaven. We had two other funerals last week. One for Victor Pham and the other was for Felix Mapa, Jr. Well, at least I have one baptism this weekend. Imagine, that is a ratio of 3:1 - three funerals to one baptism. Well, we need to pray for the eternal repose and also for the eternal repopulation. Last week Pope Francis released his new apostolic exhortation, Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love) which is centered on the importance of marriage and family and brings a rich reflection on the mission of the family and on how the church can engage couples to embrace God s vision for marriage and can also offer healing for families who are struggling according to the chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth. A joyful family is an Easter family. Christ is always alive in their hearts. The new neighbor struck up a conversation with a 7-year old boy living next door. How many kids in your family? he asked. Eight. The child said. My, that many children must cost a lot of money, said the neighbor. Oh, we don t buy them. We raise them, replied the boy. (Christian Family) Express your joy in the family amidst the hurts and pains of life s problem. Here are some quotes for discussion from a parish marriage enrichment program: - I just got back from a pleasure trip. I took my mother-in-law to the airport. - Someone stole all my credit cards, but I won t be reporting it. The thief spends les than my spouse does. - She was at the beauty shop for two hours before Easter. That was only for the estimate. - He says he finds God on the golf course instead of at Mass, but that s only because he keeps taking His name in vain out there. PREPARING FOR A CATHOLIC FUNERAL In the dioceses of the United States, the principal rituals in the Order of Christian Funerals are the Vigil for the Deceased, the Funeral Mass, and the Rite of Christian Burial. The Funeral Mass is the central liturgy of the Christian funeral in the Archdiocese of San Francisco. While most are familiar with the Order of a Funeral Mass with a body present, many are still unfamiliar with how cremation works. Here s some information about cremation. CREMATION Although the preference of the Catholic Church is for burial of the full body, the Church has permitted cremation since 1963, except when it is evident that cremation was chosen for anti Christian motives. When cremation is chosen, one of the following options is used: CREMATION AFTER THE FUNERAL LITURGY When cremation is chosen, the Church strongly prefers that the cremation take place after the liturgy and that the body of the deceased be present during the funeral rites (OCF#418). The presence of the human body clearly brings to mind the life and death of that person, and better expresses the values that the Church affirms in its funeral rites. When cremation follows the liturgy, the Funeral Liturgy and other rites are celebrated as described under Funeral Rites. FUNERAL LITURGY IN THE PRESENCE OF THE CREMATED REMAINS The Holy See authorized the bishops of the United States to allow the celebration of the Funeral Liturgy in the presence of the cremated remains of the body. The cremated remains of the body are to be treated with the same respect given to the human body. Prior to the Funeral Mass or as a part of the entrance procession of the Mass, a worthy vessel containing the cremated remains is carried with reverence into the church. The cremated remains are placed on a suitable stand or table in the place normally occupied by the coffin. The Mass begins with the sprinkling of holy water; however a pall is not placed over the cremated remains. The Funeral Mass is celebrated as described above. Following the Prayer after Communion, the Final Commendation takes place as usual. CREMATON AND COMMITAL PRIOR TO THE FUNERAL LITURGY When the body is cremated and committed soon after death, the rites of Final Commendation and Committal are used at the appropriate times, even though occurring prior to the Funeral Liturgy. The Vigil and other rites are also adapted as necessary. Following the Committal, the family and friends of the deceased join the community in celebrating the Funeral Liturgy. After Communion, the blessing is given and the people are dismissed. PROPER INTERNMENT OF CREMATED REMAINS The Church teaches that cremated remains must be treated with the same respect as the body of the deceased. The principle of respect for the cremated remains embraces the deeper belief in the individuality that each baptized person has before God. Respectful final disposition of cremated remains involves interment or entombment in the consecrated grounds of a cemetery. Burial options include a family grave marked with a traditional memorial, or internment in an urn garden or crypt within the cemetery that is especially for burial of the urn with an appropriate stone or bronze memorial. Practices such as placing the cremated remains on the ground or in a body of water, keeping the cremated remains in a home of a relative or friend, or burying remains in places other than consecrated grounds are not in keeping with the reverent disposition of what the Church requires. The Order of Christian Funerals calls for cremated remains be interred with the same dignity as is afforded the full body.

As you can see from the classroom updates below, the students jumped right back into some fun lessons their first week back. It is hard to believe that the school year is winding down! Sincerely, Natalie Cirigliano, Principal Classroom Updates Preschool-The Red Fish and Blue Fish classrooms were visited by the Easter Bunny last week! He came to thank the students for all the "good deeds" they had done during their Easter Break. Through their "good deeds", the students and their families were able to raise over $1,700 to donate to the Family House, which provides care for families with children undergoing cancer treatment. The Easter Bunny volunteers for the Family House and he was so thankful for our preschool's donation. Kindergarten- Kindergarten was very excited to come back to school and share stories of their spring break. Since everyone had a story to share, during the Language Arts station, they all wrote about their spring break. You can see their writing up in the hallway. In math, students took their Chapter 9 Math test on classifying objects. They worked on sorting objects by shape, color, size, and count. In science, students will be observing animals and how they behave in their environment. They will also understand what it means to take care of an animal and what animals need to survive. In religion, we have been discussing ways we can show our love to others, just as Jesus did. Students made placemats for people in nursing homes to show God's love. Monday morning, students were very excited to see Mr. Ibalio setting up his DJ equipment. He talked to students about what it takes to be a DJ and how to combine songs together. They learned what BPM means; beats per minute. After Mr. Ibalio's presentation, students had a 10-minute dance party! 1st Grade- Last week in first grade the students began to learn time to the hour and the half hour. They also were able to explain the differences between an analog and digital clock. All week the students were evaluated on the skills taught in reading by taking a Unit 5 test. In social studies the students continue to learn about our country's symbols. Last week they studied information about the bald eagle and the Liberty Bell. In science the students are beginning a unit on solids and liquids. Lastly, the students were assigned a book report on a non fiction book which will be due Wednesday, April 13th. 2nd Grade- This past week the second graders read about the Mass and the Eucharist in Religion. They also practiced the Mass responses and prayers. For Phonics, the students worked with long a words spelled with ei and eigh. They also added endings or suffixes to base words. In Reading, the children enjoyed reading an informational selection about jellyfish. They demonstrated how to use graphic resources. In Art, each second grader made a jellyfish. For Writing, the students completed copying over stories they wrote before Easter vacation, wrote I Am... poems, and began writing Haiku poems. In Math, the children took a benchmark test covering chapters 4-6. They continued to work with different units of measure. Continued on pg. 5

5 HOLY NAME SCHOOL On Tuesday, the students went outside to the playground with partners and traced each other. They measured the lengths of the traced shapes and recorded their findings. In Social Studies, the second graders read and discussed community and state governments. During Music, the children began practicing for First Holy Communion. With the help of the moms, the second graders made the pieces for the art project that will be auctioned off at the Holy Name Auction on April 29, rd Grade- Third graders started collecting and recording data for math. They analyzed and interpreted pictographs and bar graphs. For grammar, students learned how to join two sentences together with conjunction words as in "and, or, & but". Third graders studied about Charles Lindbergh for reading class. They learned that he was the first pilot to fly across the Atlantic Ocean, and how he handled all the challenges flying solo. In science, students studied fingerprints and heredity. They enjoyed finding out the type of fingerprints they had and how it compared with their parents and other family members. For religion, third graders realized that God wants us to keep our promises to serve. They learned to identify types of vocations such as matrimony and holy orders. For handwriting, the class practiced and mastered the uppercase W & X. 4th Grade- In grammar and writing class, fourth graders worked both individually and in small groups and crafted a group superhero story for creative writing. They also made beautiful, full-color comic book style covers to go along with them! They look so professional! In math class, students worked with decimals and learned how to convert them into fractions. Students also learned a little about Benjamin Franklin's life during reading class and watched a short cartoon about his life. They made a chart or venn diagram to compare the similarities and differences between the two stories. In art class with Mrs. Kleinhenz, students showcased moreof their creative savvy and made a beautiful flower vase piece using water colors and markers. In science, students continued learning about the different chambers and functions of the human heart by pretending the entire classroom was a big heart divided into the four chambers and mimicking what a blood cell would do in each chamber. 5th Grade- In reading class, students read a portion of Cricket in Times Square by George Selden, "Chester Cricket's Pigeon Ride." Students compared the main characters, Chester the cricket and Lulu the pigeon, to human characters. They cited details from the text to support their answers to their comprehension questions. Students studied the skill lesson, visualization, and applied it throughout the story's events, flying with Lulu over 5th Avenue, Central Park and Hudson Bay. 5th grade students studied Jesus in his role as a healer of those who were physically and mentally ill. They discussed Bible stories about Jesus healing those in need and how he shared this gift with his disciples with the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. In social studies, students began to create game boards as a review of Chapter 9. Students were very excited about this project and are looking forward to playing their games in class this week. Finally, in science, students presented their Severe Weather Power Point Projects to the class throughout the week. Students were able to choose from the following topics: typhoons, hurricanes, or tornadoes. 6th Grade- In English, students have been working on writing poetry in celebration of National Poetry Month. They have written autobiographical poems, descriptive object poems, haikus, diamantes, and limericks. They will be putting all of these poems together into a poetry chapbook. In Literature students continued the story "The White Umbrella" about two girls new to the United States. Students used the story to study character traits, as well as making inferences or "reading between the lines". We also discussed the author's use of symbolism, and how symbols are used in our daily lives. In Science, students have been studying winds, water in the atmosphere, clouds and air masses. In history class, students studied the earliest Chinese settlers as well as the Shang and Zhou. In religion, students studied the prophets who tried to help the Kingdom of Israel remain faithful to God. In Science, students have been working on climate regions and climate change including the issues surrounding Global Warming. 7th Grade- In English, students began a research project centered on CA Geology. In groups they began to research some of the environmental problems that face CA and the Bay Area. In Literature students began their third class novel, When You Reach Me. This mystery/science fiction novel is always well received by the students as it is fast-paced and keeps them guessing. In History class the students finished the chapter with lessons on the Ottoman Empire. The students observed the great achievements of Suleyman the Magnificent. In Religion the students worked on wrapping up lessons on the meaning of Holy Week. Also during our Liturgy on Thursday the students got a first hand look on the sacrament of Baptism. In Science, students studied the Digestive system and worked on a laboratory investigation on heart rate and exercise. 8th Grade- In English, students began a research project centered on the question, "Does History repeat itself?" In order to ultimately answer this question, students began to research a variety of topics, which they will later compare to the events of the Holocaust to help answer the guiding question. In Literature students continued reading their class novel To Kill A Mockingbird and also continued presenting their group collages and discussing gender roles in the novel and how they relate them to gender issues in Students ended the week by doing character maps of Atticus and Dill. In History, the students learned about the period of Reconstruction and how America transforms itself from an agricultural nation to an Industrial giant. In religion, students studied the work of St. Benedict to bring to focus on God above all else. One of these ways was allowing early converts to keep celebrations, but instead celebrate God instead of older gods. Some modern Easter celebrations developed as a result. In Science, students worked on Waves and the interaction of waves including resonance, standing waves and refraction. A MESSAGE FROM FATHER ARNOLD It seems like yesterday and my first term as pastor at Holy Name is coming to an end. The Archbishop however asked me to continue for another term of 6 years. I am happy to serve you and to learn from you once more. Somewhere in our life we sometimes fail... we sometimes get hurt... we some times get lost. But those some times are the reasons why we stand up again... why we learn to mend our wounds and why we learn to ask God for directions. Everything that happens in life has a reason. Every happening leads to another. So treasure each moment. Learn from each mistake and celebrate every triumph with thanksgiving to the Lord.
