3 FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Belated Happy Birthday to our long time parishioner Teodora De La Cruz who celebrated her 90 th birthday last week, on April Fool s Day. Well, she can fool you with her looks, because definitely she looks much younger than her age. At 90 she still volunteers at St. Anthony s every week serving lunch to the homeless. She has been doing this for the past 25 years or so. When there are special receptions at the parish, she also volunteers as one of the servers. Age doesn t matter in serving and, much more, in praising the Lord. She still goes to the 7:30AM mass everyday. Her name Teodora means God s gift. She is certainly God s gift to Holy Name and to the world. May you have more years to serve and praise the Lord! There is a beautiful life here on earth but there is a more beautiful life promised in heaven, and that is what our longtime parishioner Winifred Downing is enjoying now. She passed away last week from this beautiful world that God created, to a more beautiful world with the Creator Himself. Winifred was truly a gifted woman, a loving wife, mother and grandmother, always the person who saw everything with the eyes of faith. She was faithful to her God, to her family, to her friends and to everyone. I can hear the words of our God: Well done, good and faithful servant. Come share your Master s joy. Speaking of life, the Archbishop has decided to give me a new life at Holy Name as he has appointed me to be your Pastor for a 2 nd Six-Year term effective July 1 st, I am thankful to the Archbishop and the Priests Personnel Board for the confidence they have in me. God wants me to continue His work here at Holy Name and I am just His humble servant. (And I am proud of my humility!) I find the joy in serving His Church; I hope you don t get bored with me. So, just bear with me and support not me, but the works of the Lord. An elderly woman walked into the local country church. The friendly usher greeted her at the door and helped her up the flight of steps. "Where would you like to sit?" he asked politely. "The front row please." she answered. "You really don't want to do that", the usher said. "The pastor is really boring." "Do you happen to know who I am?" the woman inquired. "No." he said. "I'm the pastor's mother," she replied indignantly. "Do you know who I am?" he asked. "No." she said. "Good", he answered. REDEMPTION Do you remember Peter on the night Jesus was arrested? He claimed he had never heard of Jesus. Today we are called to join Peter in testifying to the name of Jesus as he does in the first reading, and in proclaiming our love for him as Peter does in the Gospel passage. The powerful imagery of John s vision in the second reading from the book of Revelation shows us the company we keep when we have faith in the name of Jesus. We join all living creatures, countless in number from heaven, earth, under the earth, in the sea; everything in the universe (Revelation 5:11, 13). The dignity and majesty described in each reading are in stark contrast to the dark and pitiful image of Peter and the other apostles at the time of Jesus arrest, trial, and crucifixion. April 5, 2016 Dear Holy Name Parishioners, Miss Natalie Cirigliano, our School Principal and I are writing to let you know about a very important long-term project that is beginning in our parish and school community. We are all, of course, aware that we live, work, pray and attend school in earthquake country here in the Bay Area. Most often we do not give another thought to that reality and we go on with our daily business. Every so often, however, new information comes up around an issue, and as a result actions are taken. With that idea in mind, the Archdiocese of San Francisco recently provided extensive engineering seismic analysis for all of our San Francisco Catholic schools. Knowing that all of our schools were constructed over forty-plus years or more, the archdiocese is attempting to assist all our schools in setting up long-term goals for each of the school facilities. Each of our school buildings went through the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake with little or no damage, which speaks to the integrity of our facilities for that specific earthquake. As responsible stewards of our schools students, faculty, and staff, however, we want to strengthen the structures of our school buildings to increase the safety of all parties in any future earthquakes. Over the coming months, each of our San Francisco Catholic schools will begin to formulate a long-term strategic plan to address and fund the work that has been noted in the engineering seismic reports. Once the strategic plans are developed and finalized, a timeline for the work to begin will then be proposed. In most cases, we anticipate that the work will take place over a period of two, three or more years. In order to avoid interrupting the students academic programs during the school year, we expect that the work can be done during summer vacations. Over the next few months, we and our parish and school committee will be meeting with the engineers to put together our parish and school strategic plan. We will keep everyone informed as this plan is being developed, and we certainly welcome your input and professional advice along the way. Years ago, the founding parish and school families at every archdiocesan school pooled together their time, energy and treasure to establish the strong faith-filled learning environment each one of your children enjoy today. We know that you, today s parish and school families, will again rally around that same goal to ensure that future generations of students will have the opportunities that your own children have been given today. We thank you for your support of Catholic education over the years and ask that you join us in prayer as we begin this journey together for our children today and the future generations of children who will be educated in our Catholic schools here in San Francisco. 5 Holy Name School parent newsletter April 5, 2016 PRINCIPAL'S LETTER Dear Holy Name Families, Welcome back! We hope you all had a restful break and are still enjoying the Easter season. Classroom Updates Preschool-Welcome back everyone! We hope everyone enjoyed their Easter break. We cannot wait to hear about all the students' Easter adventures! Before the break, the Red Fish students made two types of quesadillas for the letter of the week "Q"-a cheese quesadilla and a dessert quesadilla with sunflower butter, bananas and chocolate chips. The students loved them! The RF students also collaborated on a quilt art project. The Blue Fish students dyed Easter eggs and drew crosses for Easter. The BF students enjoyed learning some hula dance steps taught by Alaina's mom, Lindsay, for Alaina's share-shelf week. They also enjoyed the special Hawaiian fruit salad Alaina's made for snack. Kindergarten- Kindergarten was very excited for the Easter bunny, and we made sure that we taught them about the meaning of Easter so that they could appreciate what the holiday was centered around. We explored what it means to make a sacrifice for others. Students enjoyed working with Starfall in computer class and had fun painting in art. In history students learned about transportation and discussed all the ways we can get somewhere! 1st Grade- The students enjoyed the week before break as they had many lessons that were themed around Easter. The students really enjoyed watching the Stations of the Cross and understanding the history behind all of the acting. Students continued to explore their creative sides in their writing workshops! 2nd Grade- During the week of 3/21-3/24, the second graders studied the schwa sound spelled with a consonant plus er in Phonics. They read an informational selection about a ferryboat captain. The children identified factual and opinion statements in the story. They also wrote bunny stories for Easter. In Math, the second graders estimated the length of objects. Then using a ruler, they measured the objects. I n the next math lesson, the children measured objects using inches, feet, and yards. For Social Studies, the students began the unit on government. They reviewed vocabulary and read about how our country is made up of people who speak many languages. For Science, the second graders completed a packet about the life cycle of the butterfly, and they made butterflies out of construction and tissue paper. In the Gift of the Eucharist, the children read about the Last Supper. On Holy Thursday, the second graders went to church to watch the reenactment of the Stations of the Cross. 3rd Grade- Third graders worked with lapsed time for math. For reading, students recognized and understood the development of a story's plot. For Social Studies, third graders learned about present day California Indians and government. In science, the class had several experiments on how muscles learn and how the environment can influence it. For religion, students identified traditions passed on by parents. They enjoyed going to Stations of the Cross and learning more about Holy Week. 4th Grade- Before Spring Break, fourth grade students began learning about the human heart and the four chambers responsible for blood flow. They also finished up their unit in History on the Transcontinental HOLY NAME SCHOOL Railroad and some of the consequences associated with its building and completion. In religion class, Sister Esther stopped by and talked to the kids about Easter and why it is considered a bigger celebration than Christmas. 5th Grade- Right before Spring Break, the fifth grade students attended two important events with their kindergarten buddies. They attended the very moving junior high student performance of The Stations of The Cross on Holy Thursday. And, they had an awesome time jumping rope together in they gym during the American Heart Association's Jump Rope for Heart. Students began to explore the world of fractions in math and severe weather in science. 6th Grade- In Literature students began a new story called "The White Umbrella" about two girls new to the United States. Students are using the story to discover character traits, and how the author uses them to enhance storytelling. In English, students completed their Compare and Contrast essays and completed peer reviews and proofreading checks on them. In Science, students have been studying winds, water in the atmosphere, clouds and air masses. In history class, we brought the study of Ancient India to a close and previewed the Ancient Chinese culture we will cover when we return in April. In religion, we spent a lot of time talking about the observances of Holy Week. The students were very curious about what happened on each respective day, and how we apply those events to our faith lives today. 7th Grade- In Literature students began presenting their Greek Gods projects that they did with a class partner. These 3 dimensional projects turned out beautifully, and show off the creative talents of Holy Name 7th graders. In History class the students learned about how new ideas in law developed in medieval England and how new political ideas changed the structure of England's government. In religion students studied Holy Week and continued to break down the Stations of the Cross. They learned about Jesus's last days, and focused on the many traditions that happen during Holy Week. In English, students began a poetry unit in preparation for entering a poetry contest. They examined Nikki Giovanni's autobiographical poem "Nikki Rosa" and wrote and shared their own poems. In Science, students studied the organization of the body, the roles of the endocrine and nervous systems and thermoregulation. 8th Grade-In Literature students continued reading their class novel To Kill A Mockingbird and began a discussion on gender roles in the novel, and related them to gender issues in Students are in groups, working on creating collages with images from various media. In history class the students completed their study on the Civil War. The last lesson was on the legacy of the War. The students analyzed the economic, physical, and emotional costs of the war. The students are also able to describe the events related to President Lincoln's assassination. In English, students took a test on pronouns and began a poetry unit. They read "Nikki Rosa" and completed a brainstorming sheet about their own lives. In religion, they learned about the various ways the early Catholic Church spread through Europe. One of these ways was allowing early converts to keep celebrations, but instead celebrate God instead of older gods. Some modern Easter celebrations developed as a result. A MESSAGE FROM FATHER ARNOLD As we start the month of April, remember, life can be happier and less stressful if we remember one simple thought :"We can't have all that we desire, but GOD will give us all that we deserve!" Always trust God that he knows what is best for us.
