Ready with a smile like a shining star, Special and wonderful that s what you are. --unknown To mark Holy Name of Jesus Church s 85th Anniversary, a Tree of Life, a bronze tree trunk with approximately 400 leaves was installed at the back of the Church. Donors will have their names, or those they wish to honor, engraved on the leaf. The proceeds of the donations to the Tree of Life will go towards a much-needed Capital Improvement Fund. It is well known by all who gather here that we are constantly dealing with many repairs needed in our aging buildings (circa 1941, 1949 and 1964). We are confident that the funds raised from the Tree of Life will provide for some of the necessary expenses that we anticipate for the future. The Holy Name Tree of Life was unveiled October 10, 2010 at the 85th Anniversary Mass and Pastor s Installation presided by Most Rev. Robert McElroy. 4 FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora A Happy and Better New Year, Dear Friends! After the joyous season of Christmas parties and endless eating and drinking, I hope you did not break this commandment: Thou shall not weigh more than thy refrigerator. It sounds exaggerated but there s some truth there. For the nine days before Christmas I have been eating a big Filipino breakfast served after the 5:30AM Mass. But the parishioners woke up so early and came to Mass for the real food at every Eucharistic meal: Jesus, the reason for the season. The Simbang Gabi was very well attended and almost every day we were joined by some representatives from the Philippine Consulate. On the first day of the nine-day novena of Masses, the Philippine Consul General & Mrs. Marciano Paynor, Jr. came and brought a new vestment for me, which I wore at the Mass. Again, the Simbang Gabi Masses could have not have been successful without the able leadership and hard work of Carmen Palarca, together with her husband Domingo. What a journey 2010 has been for all of us. And what will 2011 be like? We do not know what the future holds, but we know who holds the future in His hands. Have you ever been just sitting there and all of a sudden you feel like doing something nice for someone you care for? THAT'S GOD... He speaks to you through the Holy Spirit. Have you ever been down and out and nobody seems to be around for you to talk to? THAT'S GOD... He wants you to talk to Him. Have you ever been thinking about somebody that you haven't seen in a long time and then next thing you know... you see them or receive a phone call from them? THAT'S GOD... There is no such thing as "coincidence." Have you ever received something wonderful that you didn't even ask for? Like money in the mail, a debt that had mysteriously been cleared, or a coupon to a department store where you had just seen something you wanted, but couldn't afford? THAT'S GOD... He knows the desires of your heart... Have you ever been in a situation and you had no clue how it was going to get better, but now as you look back on it, you got through it? THAT'S GOD... He passes us through tribulations to see a brighter day. May GOD always be our constant guide on our journey this New Year 2011! Sr. Stella HOLY NAME OF JESUS MEMORIAL/FOUNDATION FUND An appropriate way of expressing love and respect in memory of a deceased relative or friend, or of presenting a gift for any special occasion in the life of a relative or friend, is to make a financial contribution to a good work. The Holy Name Memorial/Foundation Fund was developed in order to provide members and friends of Holy Name Church to take part in providing various items of worship, as well as the upkeep of our buildings and grounds in general. Memorials are given for many reasons. Some are given in memory of a family member or friend who died, some are given in honor of a special person on a special occasion, and some are given because of a determined need. 5 HOLY NAME PARISH ORGANIZATIONS: The Parish Pastoral Council is a consultative body that makes recommendations to the pastor. The aim of the council is to make the life and activity of the parish ever more closely conform to the gospel. It assists the parish s apostolic work, and coordinates various independent lay associations and initiatives. The members offer wise counsel so that the pastor can plan the pastoral program systematically and carry it out effectively. PARENTS GUILD: A fundamental reason for the success of our school program is the unique partnership developed between parents and school staff. By taking an active part in our home-school partnership, parents become role models for our students and show their children that they value school. The Parents Guild raises money for the school through various fund-raising activities which they sponsor and coordinate. This organization provides spiritual, educational and recreational opportunities for its members. They reach out to Catholics and non- Catholics alike, irrespective of whether they have children in the School or not. This club meets every 1st Friday of the month at 8 PM in the Flanagan Center. Parish Organizations continued next column... LIGHT OF THE WORLD Epiphany can be understood as an extension of the Nativity of the Lord that we celebrate on December 25. While at Christmas we celebrate Jesus coming as the long-awaited king and Messiah of the Jewish people, on Epiphany we celebrate the revelation that Jesus is the Savior and Light of all nations Jews, Gentiles, and all people. The star shines so brightly that it attracts magi who come from far distant countries to worship Jesus. They are not Jews, yet they are drawn to the Light of the World. The letter to the Ephesians reveals that the Light of the World was for the Gentiles as well as the Jews Christ gathers all people into the light of his love. The reading from Isaiah also describes a gathering of diverse peoples, but this time it is to the light that emanates from the people of God. Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.
