In the spirit of the Joy of the Gospel we work together promoting Catholic values and teachings. Our parish encourages a strong devotion to our Blessed Mother Mary, who gives us an example of faithful discipleship and a generous stewardship way of life.

3 FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Welcome to our Holy Name School family, as we celebrate the Spirit Mass at 9:30AM this Sunday. We have about 317 students this year. Our preschool, on the other hand, has 75 (fullday) students. We have 14 new students at the big school, excluding the Kindergarten. We also have new teachers. Our new First Grade teacher is Kate McCaffrey. Kate is a graduate of our Holy Name School and is the daughter of long time parishioners Chris and Marybeth Cody. We also have a new Second Grade teacher, who came to us all the way from Ireland. She is Aoife Dillon, replacing Mrs. Sharon Aymard who is now the K-3 rd Grade Resource Support Teacher. Sharon s husband Roger Aymard is now our new Athletic director, a job he used to have years ago. Our new 6 th Grade teacher is Brendan Nolan, who is also a graduate of Holy Name School and the son of our 7 th Grade Teacher, Rita Nolan. We also have a new 8 th Grade teacher, Sarah Currier, who has two children at school, Xavier (1 st Grade) and Pauline (2 nd Grade). Sarah s husband Andrew Currier is the new president of Riordan High School. The Currier family is also a new addition to our parish family. A new teacher of the earth science class was lecturing on map reading. After explaining about latitude, longitude, degrees and minutes the teacher asked, Suppose I asked you to meet me for lunch at 23 degrees, 4 minutes north latitude and 45 degrees, 15 minutes east longitude? After a confused silence, a voice volunteered, I guess you d be eating alone. Our school, under the leadership of our principal Natalie Cirigliano, has embraced the Stewardship model our parish is trying to nurture. Instead of having a Parent s Guild this year, they have several committees to lead school activities and fundraising events. Four of our school fathers showed us an example of what stewardship is all about. Engineered by Silver Cusi, and joined by Ray Sum, Lester Gee and Ryan Quan, they spent practically the whole day last Saturday working on our internet wiring connections in our Pastoral Center. This will be extended to the Preschool, and eventually the Flanagan Center and the Church. With these fathers expertise, we will have a better internet connection at the Flanagan and the Church, as we have now at the Pastoral Center. We thank them for sharing their time and talent, and for showing us that you don t have to be a part of our church to practice stewardship in our parish. I can see the unity and collaboration between our school and our church, as one big parish community- parish family. On the other hand, we recently lost one of our graduates and one of Holy Name School s many stars. Mr. Terry Hanley (HN 68), Star of the Sea school principal, passed away last Tuesday surrounded by his family. I was able to give him the Sacrament of the Anointing that Saturday evening when he was struggling for dear life. Let us pray for his eternal repose, and for his family and for the Star of the Sea School community. When you look at death, it makes you understand the importance of the moment. When you have life and death in front of you, and you witness seeing someone deteriorating in front of you - it's an overwhelming experience. If you don't learn from that, I don't know what else you're gonna learn from. FAITH FORMATION * CATECHESIS * PASTORAL OUTREACH * Director: Sr. Cristina Ovejera, FdCC Crisfdcc2016@yahoo.com (415) An Invitation The Canossian Sisters and Lay Associates invite parishioners to celebrate with them the Feast of Our Mother of Sorrows on Friday, Sept. 15 th. Mass will be at 9:00AM in the chapel. This will be followed by brunch in the Pastoral Center dining room, prepared and hosted by the Canossian family. We honor our Blessed Mother as Patroness. She shared the Greatest Love of Christ Crucified, by living out her Yes from the event of the Annunciation, most fully at the foot of the Cross. RCIA Inquiry Period is every Wednesday at 7:00-8:30 PM in the meeting room of the Pastoral Center. Please register with Sr. Cristina in the parish office. The Inquiry period is the stage when anyone who wants to know about the Catholic Church attend sessions. For some who have engaged in their own study or attended Mass attentively and regularly, this period might last months. For others who have little background in Catholicism or Christianity in general, more time might be needed. The first session is usually an orientation to the whole RCIA process. Knitting and Crocheting Group We will revive this creative group, and will connect it to various groups already existing or beginning in our parish. Prayer shawls, scarves, bonnets, blankets, throws, will be given to the sick and elderly, homeless, cancer patients through Holy Name Cancer Support Group, and others. The group will work and socialize every second Monday of the month, at 2:00-3:00PM in the Pastoral Center. Those who cannot come may work at home, and submit their finished projects to Sr. Cristina. We will begin on Monday, Oct. 9 th. Please inform Sr. Cristina if you are interested to join this fun and creative group. In the spirit of a Stewardship Way of Life, this is an opportunity to share your talents. New Adult Faith Formation Program Also starting in October is our Fall study on Bishop Robert Barron s Catholicism. New series The Pivotal Players. We will begin with St. Francis of Assisi The Reformer. Rebuild my Church! Christ s mission to St. Francis is the perennial task of the Church in every age of its life. But how is that reform and renewal accomplished? The radical simplicity of St. Francis life demonstrates how the foundations of true love and lasting reform are to be built on the solid rock that is the witness of the saints. The Church celebrates the feast of St. Francis on Oct. 4 th. We are blessed to have him as patron saint of our Archdiocese of San Francisco, and have our city named for this great saint. This six-weeks series will begin on Thursday, October 5, at 7:00-8:30 PM in the meeting room of the Pastoral Center. The whole study will be held from Oct. 5 to Nov. 9 th. Sr. Cristina will facilitate. Religious Education Classes are held every Sunday, at 10:30AM to 12:00 Noon. Registration is still going on. Sacramental preparations are for First Holy Communion, Confirmation, Baptism (for children ages 9 to 17 join the RCICY or Rite of Christian Initiation of Children and Youth). Please ask Sr. Cristina or Hilda Dela Cruz for more information. Thank you.

They kept communities safe, and were there to alert them to any impending danger or attack. Before locks, alarms, and security systems, watchmen were the protectors, the safety measure. So when the Lord charges Ezekiel as a watchman today, it is a weighty charge. So weighty, we learn, that if Ezekiel fails to sound the alarm for those around him and they perish in a state of wickedness, Ezekiel will be held responsible! This profound connection between God s will on earth and in heaven is repeated in today s Gospel, where Jesus instructs us that we are to be the security force, the watchers placed on alert that nowhere in the Body of Christ, the church, will there be any two members of the one Body who are not reconciled. Scripture tells us that Jesus reconciled all things in heaven and on earth through the blood of his cross. But we are given the mission to continue that reconciliation on earth as in heaven through our ceaseless efforts to be, as Paul would write, ambassadors of reconciliation. Let us not get too comfortable thinking that we are responsible only for keeping our own lives from the path of wickedness and disagreement. We are also held accountable for the lives of the members of Christ s body around us. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

5 SEPTEMBER 10, 2017 TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME When couples who are going to be married in the Church come to see me for the first time I get them to fill out a brief questionnaire. The last two questions on the form ask: What do you like best about your partner? What do you like best about yourself? The first question usually presents no problems, although it can hold a few surprises and sometimes a playful punch if the right answer is not forthcoming! The second question seems to present all sorts of difficulties, especially for prospective grooms. Some of us find it hard to name the God-given qualities we value most in our character. Some couples try to pass it off, That's for others to say or, I don t want to blow my own trumpet. Others try to dismiss the question as being new age or trendy. But the question does, in fact, cut to the heart of both today's second reading and Gospel. You must love your neighbor as you love yourself. We cannot say in the same breath, I hate myself, but I am a good Christian. For St Paul, love of self was not indulgent, but the cornerstone of our mission to love as Jesus loves us. Paul knew the difference between self-love and self-adoration. Our love of God is expressed in the healthy and appropriate esteem we have for ourselves. Put another way, we cannot love anyone else if we don t love ourselves. If we have poor self-esteem then often we need others to fill up this gap in our self-love. Most relationships cannot sustain such a demand. The Church has to take some responsibility for this state of affairs. We used to be taught that mortification and self-denial were good Christian virtues, and indeed they can be. When properly understood they are never opportunities for self-hatred. The sanest spiritual writers in our tradition saw these virtues as paths of closeness with God and service of our neighbor. One such writer was St Ignatius Loyola who in the Spiritual Exercises saw that it was precisely as sinners that God loves us. He saw that one of the greatest gifts the Lord can give us is when we see our sinfulness for what it is, but are not overwhelmed by it, and that we experience the power of God's love for us who calls us to walk as children of the light. Jesus in today's Gospel attends to this destructive side of our human nature. Jesus teaches us that those who do not love their neighbor as they should are to be treated with dignity and respect and offered every opportunity to seek forgiveness until it is clear they can no longer be a part of the Christian family. The challenge and hallmark of the Christian life is the way in which we live out God s love and forgiveness. And, although the Christian community should be the last group to exclude anyone, even we have to have our boundaries. Sometimes this involves holding others to account for what they say and do, especially if they claim to be a follower of Christ. The love and forgiveness of God does not mean that anything goes. It is a love that calls for constant conversion. We can witness to it only to the degree that we have experienced it, from God, from others, and in the way we love and forgive ourselves.
