3 FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Congratulations to our young people who received the Sacrament of Confirmation last Friday, presided by Auxiliary Bishop of San Francisco Robert McElroy. In Confirmation the gifts of the Holy Spirit are increased in us. It reminds us of Pentecost, the feast we celebrate this Sunday. Pentecost commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, the Blessed Virgin Mary and the other followers of Jesus. Hence, we celebrate the feast of the Third Glorious Mystery of the Rosary. We also called this feast as the Birthday of the Church. We celebrate the birthday of the Church in this new world where the stone tablet during the time of Moses has been transformed into an electronic tablet. I wonder if this scenario I received from an will ever happen: CHURCH SERVICES of THE FUTURE (Maybe the not so distant future?) PASTOR: "Praise the Lord!" CONGREGATION: "Hallelujah!" PASTOR: "Will everyone please turn on their tablet, PC, ipad, smart phone, and Kindle Bibles to 1 Cor. 13:13. And please switch on your Bluetooth to download the sermon." P-a-u-s-e... 4 The Second Va can Council: A 50th Anniversary Retrospec ve By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back Ques on: Why did God choose to make Himself known first to Israel and then later through Jesus Christ to both Israel and the rest of the world? Answer from Dei Verbum: In carefully planning and preparing the salva on of the whole human race the God of infinite love, by a special dispensa on, chose for Himself a people to whom He would entrust His promises. First He entered into a covenant with Abraham (see Gen. 15:18) and, through Moses, with the people of Israel (see Ex. 24:8). To this people which He had acquired for Himself, He so manifested Himself through words and deeds as the one true and living God that Israel came to know by experience the ways of God with men. Then too, when God Himself spoke to them through the mouth of the prophets, Israel daily gained a deeper and clearer understanding of His ways and made them more widely known among the na ons (see Ps. 21:29; 95:1-3; Is. 2:1-5; Jer. 3:17). The plan of salva on foretold by the sacred authors, recounted and explained by them, is found as the true word of God in the books of the Old Testament: these books, therefore, wri en under divine inspira on, remain permanently valuable. "For all that was wri en for our instruc on, so that by steadfastness and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope" (Rom. 15:4). Editor s Note: We con nue reviewing Dei Verbum. This week s passage found above relates to God s divine revela on in the Old Testament. I recall from R.C.I.A. class that Jesus is o en concealed in the Old Testament and later revealed in the New Testament. These parallels are quite frequent between the Old and the New. For example, Adam and Eve together bring sin into the world, as read in the Old Testament. Jesus, the new Adam, through the coopera on of Mary, the new Eve, on the other hand, bring salva on to mankind as read in the New Testament. The Ark of the Covenant carries the Ten Commandments as described in the Old Testament. In contrast, Mary carries Jesus in her womb and in this way is herself the Ark of God s New Covenant. Jesus himself consolidated these Ten Commandments from the Old Testament into his two Greatest commandments as read in the New Testament: You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind and You shall love your neighbor as yourself (Ma. 22:37-39). Often, however, it s not the same as where we would like to be, or think we should be. It may be that at such times we re wrestling with the very Spirit of God. One of my Old Testament favorites is from Malachi 1:11, which reads: For from the rising of the sun, even to its se ng, my name is great among the na ons; And everywhere they bring sacrifice to my name, and a pure offering; For great is my name among the na ons, says the LORD of hosts. Jesus, as present to us in the Eucharist, provides that sacrifice and pure offering described in the Book of Malachi within the Holy Mass. And on any given hour of the day that Holy Mass is taking place somewhere in the world. Jesus concealed in the Old Testament to be sure!

5 MINISTRY OF CONSOLATION To offer spiritual support and the healing comfort of God to all who mourn a loss through death. In the scriptures Jesus comforts those who mourn, as in Matthew 11:28-29: Come to me, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, I will give you rest...and you will find rest. In the same Gospel, Jesus reassures us of God s solace: Happy are those who mourn; God will comfort them! (5:4). We as Christians follow this example. For more information, please contact Susan at (415) or Sr. Stella at (415) Introduction to Pentecost Sunday: Pentecost Sunday is one of the most ancient feasts of the Church, celebrated early enough to be mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles (20:16) and St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians (16:8). It is the 50th day after Easter (if we count both Easter and Pentecost), and it supplants the Jewish feast of Pentecost, which took place 50 days after the Passover and which celebrated the sealing of the Old Covenant on Mount Sinai. Quick Facts: Date: Fifty days after Easter Sunday; Type of Feast: Solemnity. Jews from all over were gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate the Jewish feast. On that Sunday, ten days after the Ascension of Our Lord, the Apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary were gathered in the Upper Room, where they had seen Christ after His Resurrection: And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a mighty wind coming, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them parted tongues as it were of fire, and it sat upon every one of them: And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they began to speak with divers tongues, according as the Holy Ghost gave them to speak. [Acts 2:2-4] Christ had promised His Apostles that He would sent His Holy Spirit, and, on Pentecost, they were granted the gifts of the Spirit. The Apostles began to preach the Gospel in all of the languages that the Jews who were gathered there spoke, and about 3,000 people were converted and baptized that day. That is why Pentecost is often called "the birthday of the Church." On this day, with the descent of the Holy Spirit, Christ's mission is completed, and the New Covenant is inaugurated. It's interesting to note that St. Peter, the first pope, was already the leader and spokesman for the Apostles on Pentecost Sunday (see Acts 2:14ff). In years past, Pentecost was celebrated with greater solemnity than it is today. In fact, the entire period between Easter and Pentecost Sunday was known as Pentecost (and it still is called Pentecost in the Eastern churches, both Catholic and Orthodox). During those 50 days, both fasting and kneeling were strictly forbidden, because this period was supposed to give us a foretaste of the life of Heaven. Reflecting on God s Word In the Middle Ages, when science seemed to be stepsister to the arts, people thought that phlogiston was what made something burnable. The more phlogiston, the more readily flammable was the way they understood physics inner workings. It explained why rocks did not burn and why straw readily did. Though phlogiston has long been shelved, its theory is not so far removed from how the Spirit of God burns in our lives, nor is it far from the gifts that God s Spirit sets aflame in us. If some effort of ours glows with light and heat, it may be a sign of much Spirit, sort of like phlogiston. On the other hand, if in our effort to shine there s not even a spark, it s quite likely that that is not where the Spirit has settled into us. It might be better to pay attention then to some other aspect of life. The struggle is to make sure that our imagined passion and where the Spirit of God wants us to be are one and the same so that the former does not cause us to stray from the latter. How does anyone know if they are where they should be? St. Paul says that the Spirit gives each of us our own dose of divine giftedness, our own spark with which to shine, but it s not given to us for our own glory or fun or feel-good self-image but for the good of others, for the community, for building up life.
