ACE COLLECTION Next Sunday s Second Collection is the ACE Collection for the benefit of the Parish School. Our Baptismal Preparation Class for parents and Godparents is every 1st Saturday of the month at 2:00 PM in the Pastoral Center. Pre-registration for this class is a MUST. HOLY NAME CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC Founded in 2006, the Holy Name Conservatory of Music offers private lessons in piano, guitar, violin and voice to Holy Name School students, its alumni and parishioners. Our teachers tailor private lessons to address the learning style and goals of each student. Equal emphasis is placed on developing technical proficiency, interpretative skills, individual creativity, and self confidence. The Fall Semester runs from September to December. Answer from Sacrosanctum Concilium: Wherefore, in the revision of the liturgy, the following general norms should be observed (cont.): Even in the liturgy, the Church has no wish to impose a rigid uniformity in ma ers which do not implicate the faith or the good of the whole community; rather does she respect and foster the genius and talents of the various races and peoples. Anything in these peoples' way of life which is not indissolubly bound up with supers on and error she studies with sympathy and, if possible, preserves intact. Some mes in fact she admits such things into the liturgy itself, so long as they harmonize with its true and authen c spirit. Provisions shall also be made, when revising the liturgical books, for legi mate varia ons and adapta ons to different groups, regions, and peoples, especially in mission lands, provided that the substan al unity of the Roman rite is preserved; and this should be borne in mind when drawing up the rites and devising rubrics. Within the limits set by the typical edi ons of the liturgical books, it shall be for the competent territorial ecclesias cal authority to specify adapta ons, especially in the case of the administra on of the sacraments, the sacramentals, processions, liturgical language, sacred music, and the arts, but according to the fundamental norms laid down in this Cons tu- on. In some places and circumstances, however, an even more radical adapta on of the liturgy is needed, and this entails greater difficul es. Wherefore: 1) The competent territorial ecclesias cal authority must, in this ma er, carefully and prudently consider which elements from the tradi ons and culture of individual peoples might appropriately be admi ed into divine worship. Adapta ons which are judged to be useful or necessary should then be submi ed to the Apostolic See, by whose consent they may be introduced. 2) To ensure that adapta ons may be made with all the circumspec on which they demand, the Apostolic See will grant power to this same territorial ecclesias cal authority to permit and to direct, as the case requires, the necessary preliminary experiments over a determined period of me among certain groups suited for the purpose. FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora I made a quick trip to the Philippines last week to pay my respects and give tribute to a very special person who passed away. Ms. Lilia Gonzalez, 83 years old, was not a blood relative but she was a mother not only to me but also to the a cappella choir which I formed some 20 years ago. She was our music adviser, benefactor and manager rolled into one and indeed a mother to us all. On the day of my departure, I left Holy Name after the funeral for a parishioner and Knight of Holy Name member, Joseph Miles. I arrived back to Holy Name with another funeral for long time parishioner Phyllis Cecchettini, who was not just a mother to her biological children, but also to the many people she voluntarily gave service to. Phyllis volunteered at the Janet Pomeroy Recreation and Rehabilitation Center for 59 years, Laguna Honda Hospital for 32 years and the with Handicapables. She was an active parishioner of Holy Name participating in church organizations and parish ministries, including organizing and delivering the giving tree presents at Advent. Holy Name Fil-Am Communications officer Manzel Delacruz noted that she was another example of someone who served God and His community till her last breath. She has loved Holy Name Parish all her life and her illness did not stop her from serving the Church, Manzel added. Recently, Mrs. Cecchetini received the Jefferson Award: Brightening the Lives of Disabled Seniors. She now enjoys a bigger award and the greater reward of eternal life. Salute to a great person and a faithful servant! So, I recently had back-to-back funerals. I don t know why the word Funeral starts with these three letters, it s never Fun. On second thought, it is, when you think that the deceased person doesn t belong to death for he/she already belongs to Christ who is life, and that person now enjoys eternal life with Him. A passenger in a taxi leaned over to ask the driver a question and tapped him on the shoulder. The driver screamed, lost control of the cab, nearly hit a bus, drove up over the curb, and stopped just inches from a large plate glass window. For a few moments everything was silent in the cab, and then the still shaking driver said I'm sorry, but you scared the daylights out of me. The frightened passenger apologized to the driver and said he didn't realize a mere tap on the shoulder could frighten him so much. The driver replied, "No, no, I'm sorry, it's entirely my fault. Today is my first day driving a cab... I've been driving a hearse for the last 25 years." PRAYING TO THE ANGELS We pray to the angels, for they are given to us as guardians. 5 Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Luke 16: Once upon a time... When Maurus left the Roman garrison at Tiberius, he almost tripped over the little man. Crouched on his hands and knees, the beggar looked up at Maurus with pitiful eyes. When he saw Maurus look back at him, the beggar quickly bobbed his head up and down as if he were crying out Yes, yes! With his few broken teeth, he tried to smile and lifted one cupped hand to receive a coin. The well-fed Maurus looked down on the little man groveling at his feet. His deformity was hideous. He could not stand because only stumps protruded where his feet would have been.. His hungry eyes pleaded harder for a coin. Maurus suddenly remembered the time and turned away. He hurried down the winding street toward his meeting with the Tiberias tax collectors. As he walked briskly through the town, Maurus fat money pouch chafed against his chest. The bulging sack of coins hung beneath his tunic from a long leather cord around his neck. As he passed the Synagogue, Maurus glanced over at a big crowd gathered around a man who was standing at the top of the steps to the building. The man seemed to be looking directly at him. Once there was a rich man who dressed in purple and linen and feasted splendidly every day., Jesus began in a loud voice. Maurus was wearing a purple tunic and thinking the speaker was making fun of him, he stopped and glared up at the man. At his gate lay a beggar named Lazarus who was covered with sores.. Jesus continued. Maurus couldn t believe what he was hearing. How could the speaker have known about the beggar he had just nearly tripped over. Jesus continued to tell his story about the beggar s death and the terrifying consequences the rich man ending up in torment, begging for a taste of water from the former beggar. Maurus fearfully recalled his own cold heartedness to the deformed beggar he d just passed, vowing to give him a coin on his return. As he hurried on to the meeting, the image of the beggar s broken toothed smile continued to haunt him. When Maurus returned to the Roman garrison later that day the beggar was nowhere to be found. Everyday afterward he searched for the beggar. He never returned. Only the haunting memory of those pleading eyes remained. Sometimes things just don t work out. We miss an opportunity and the consequences remain, unrelenting, unforgiving and unchangeable. Jesus story reminds us of that and urges us to give our flowers to the living. Tomorrow may be too late. We move through life sandwiched between the past and the future. The only reality is the present moment which will never come again.
