2 Our Vision St. James Episcopal Church serves Muskingum County and the surrounding southeastern Ohio area. We are a welcoming, caring, diverse, and inclusive community of faith, hope, love and fellowship. The people of St. James joyfully celebrate our love of God through worship, preaching, and music. In Christ s name and led by the Holy Spirit we strive to learn more about God, endeavor to grow in our faith, and to serve others. Who Are We (How we serve others) OUTREACH ACTIVITIES: v The Friendship Dinner has served approximately 150 dinners each month to members of the community. Food not consumed at these dinners is donated to Christ s Table in Zanesville. v The Maker s Guild sews, knits and crochets layettes for newborn infants. This ecumenical group of ladies has helped the Salvation Army, Eastside Community Ministries, and the Help Me Grow program for the last four years. v The Second Chance Sale is a parish-wide collection of gently-used items offered for sale. Proceeds from the sale benefit the Eastside Community Ministries of Zanesville and East Central Ohio (ECO) Area Ministry of which St. James is a member. v Brown Bag Sundays are held quarterly during the year to benefit Eastside Community Ministries or the Outreach Programs of the East Central Ohio Area Ministry (ECO). v The Katherine Geyer Fund for Outreach assists people in our community. Over the past few years part of this fund has been used to purchase Christmas gifts for families in the Zanesville area.

3 v Souper Bowl Benefit Luncheon is held each October with the proceeds divided among Eastside Community Ministries, Catholic Social Services, The Muskingum Center for Seniors, Community Build, Christ s Table, The Salvation Army and Christ s Community. As one of the founding churches, St. James has been a participant in this annual activity for the past 10 years. v The Rector s Discretionary Fund is budgeted for the Rector to assist people in need. EAST CENTRAL OHIO AREA MINISTRY (ECO) This is a cooperative, regional ministry, including St. James and three area mission congregations: St. John s in Cambridge, St. Paul s in Martin s Ferry, and Trinity in Bellaire. The parishioners of St. James have contributed material assistance from time to time in cash and in kind. On occasion, the Rector and the Area Missioner have participated in pulpit exchanges and the Area Missioner has provided some clergy and pastoral care assistance to St. James. Our Next Rector The past several years have been a time of spiritual growth and change in the congregation. Based on the results of our parish survey, we consider the five primary responsibilities of our Rector to be: v Church Growth and Development v Spiritual Leadership v Preaching and Liturgy v Pastoral Care v Community Outreach Our Vision Who We Are Our Next Rector

4 Our Church Community Members of St. James are actively engaged in every aspect of our parish life. v The Pastoral Care Committee actively assists the Rector in year-round ministry to newcomers, the homebound, those in grief of loved ones, or to those experiencing special life events. Comfort Meals are served by the Committee to family and friends after funerals and memorial services. v The Stewardship Committee focuses on diverse activities such as legacy giving, time and talents, pledge in-gathering, and environmental stewardship with emphasis on stewardship as a way of life. v Adult Forum and Children s Education are both offered every Sunday from September through May. The Adult Forum classes offer a variety of topics pertaining to spiritual growth. In the Children s Education classes, students learn an age-appropriate version of Sunday s lesson. v The Lay-Weeders is a group of volunteers who work to beautify the grounds and gardens of St. James. Our garden is enjoyed by the public for meditation and relaxation. v Episcopal Church Women (ECW) organizes our Shrove Tuesday Supper. They also provide social and educational activities as well. ECW provides support to the Benedictine Brothers, Sisters of the Transfiguration, Washington National Cathedral as well as to ECO churches and to the Rector s Discretionary Fund. v St. Hilda s Guild donates quarterly to Eastside Community Ministries through the Guild s Prescription Project and participates in other activities at St. James.

5 v Music is an integral part of parish life at St. James. Parishioners share their musical gifts by singing in the choir or playing musical instruments, either in solo or ensemble arrangements. v Eucharistic Visitors are an important part of the ministry of St. James. They assist with the liturgy, and also provide training for acolytes. Licensed by the Diocese of Southern Ohio, they serve as chalice bearers, lay readers and visitors for home communion. They also serve on the Altar Guild. v Altar Guild members prepare and care for the altar and the Eucharistic elements for all worship services in God s house. Our members enjoy gathering during the year for brass and silver polishing. v Acolytes are offered the opportunity to participate in the procession as torch bearers. v Many other parishioners assist by ushering and reading the lessons each Sunday. Those who can also help with special services during the week. v The Parish Health Ministries offer written articles in the Lantern and service leaflets pertinent to timely health issues. Monthly blood pressure checks are provided for our parishioners. Our Church Community

6 Our History Twenty-five families of the Episcopal faith were living in the pioneer town of Zanesville in 1816 when Dr. Joseph Doddridge, a doctor and an Episcopal priest, came to Zanesville. The group was organized in October 1816 as St. James Episcopal Church. The first confirmation was held May 23, 1819 and the parish incorporated in The current church, at 155 North Sixth Street in Zanesville, was completed in 1843 and has had recent major renovations and improvements. An elevator was installed several years ago and complete renovation of the beautiful stained-glass windows was done in 2004 and The altar was also moved from the reredos so the priest can face the congregation during the Eucharist. Cincinnati is the see city of our Diocese and is about three hours from Zanesville. Our Bishop, Thomas Breidenthal, has his office in Cincinnati. Our Suffragan Bishop, Kenneth Price, has his office in Columbus. Proctor Camp and Conference Center is located near London, Ohio, approximately 12 hours from Zanesville.
