1 Report Cards When I was a kid, we walked uphill both ways to school and our report cards were easy to understand. We received grades ranging from A to F for reading, writing, math, and other easily identified academic disciplines. By comparison, my children receive multi-page computer printouts with dozens of categories which are rated either below the standard, approaches the standard, meets the standard, or masters the standard. This report card will, I hope, be more like the clear and simple report cards of my childhood. We, the people of Christ Cathedral, have earned an A in the following ways. Being open to Salina: A few years ago, we started talking about opening the doors of the Cathedral to our community to make our space a civic asset as well as a spiritual one. To that end, we ve made remarkable progress. Every year we bless the animals on the first Sunday in October; in January we hosted the interfaith Martin Luther King, Jr. service; and you may also have noticed the booklet about our architecture prepared by Kansas Wesleyan students taking a course on medieval history. Music: we have become the regular venue for the Salina Youth Chorale, held a public concert by Acoustic Eidolon, a band brought to Salina by the Arts and Humanities Commission, and hosted numerous piano concerts ranging from the internationally acclaimed pianist Steven Spooner to a tribute concert by students of a beloved local piano teacher. In addition to these events, we have a strong music ministry led by Matt Schwan and Royce Young. Matt and Royce are talented professionals who frequently recruit friends and colleagues to enhance our musical offerings. Christ Cathedral Music Academy, long a dream of music supporters at the Cathedral, is in the final stages of preparation and will be officially open in the next few months. Stewardship: Administratively, we have done an excellent job of managing our finances. For the last three years, we have been almost exactly on budget at year-end. Pledging is steady, and we have a high degree of financial transparency. In 2015, we only took 83% of our budgeted draw from endowment funds and total expenses were $23,000 under budget. We have raised over $90,000 to be matched by the Endowment for necessary capital improvements. We get a C in volunteering and Christian education.volunteering: the Cathedral s ministry is blessed to have some very committed folks, but overall we struggle to fill the volunteer positions that are essential to our ministries. Feed the Hungry, our daily outreach to food-insecure people of Salina requires a time commitment of only 45 minutes, but Cathedral volunteers cover just over half the days we are open. The remainder of our volunteers are from other area churches, and we sometimes rely on staff when our regular volunteers are not available. Christian education: For the last five years, the number of people leading this vital ministry has gotten smaller, and our ability to form children and adults into the likeness of Christ suffers from lack of commitment at the congregational level. Other ministries altar guild, ushers, various committees have seen a similar trend. If every member of this congregation was committed to doing 2-3 hours of ministry a week at the Cathedral in addition to regularly attending Sunday worship, we would soon be looking for jobs instead of asking for volunteers. The final area on this report is spiritual leadership, Here, we are earning an encouraging B. For the last year, our vestry meetings have been very business-oriented, but we recently decided that the Vestry needed to do more Jesus and less business. Our January meeting began with lectio divina, a form of meditation on Scripture. The Vestry enjoyed the practice, and the new Vestry will focus more on prayer and discernment, and less on the smallest details of church management. That s our ministry report card. We have much to celebrate and plenty to improve upon, but most of all, we have a time of discernment and spiritual growth before us in the year to come. -Benjamin
2 Annual Meeting Report The 2016 Annual Meeting was held January 31. Steve Hoffman, Senior Warden, talked about improvements that had been made, the new Music Academy Ministry, and the ordination of Katie Hargis and Matthew Kemp. David Nichols, Junior Warden, talked about improvements, including the landscaping, new paint and carpeting in the parish hall, work on the gazebo, and the Music Academy offices. Royce Young talked about the Christ Cathedral Music Academy Ministry and listed some of the music concerts coming in Mike Beatty reported that the Endowment Fund has had many good years but the last five years have not done so well. However, all gifts to the Cathedral have been preserved and the endowment has been able to increase its contributions to the Cathedral budget. Gordon Tillberg reported that in 2015 income exceeded expenses by $4,882. The 2016 budget is based on the 2015 actual budget. Tim Gaither and Kate Wise were elected to serve three year terms on the Vestry and David Nichols term will be extended by one year. They join Steve Hoffman, DeMay Grunden, Harvetta Von Fange, and Catheryn Thornton on the Vestry. Delegates for the Diocesan Convention include Jennifer Favre Higgins, Steve Hoffman, Pam Smith, David Nichols, and Harvetta Von Fange and alternates, Harry Smith and Catheryn Thornton. David Nichols moved to authorize the Vestry to make the following capital improvements to improve the safety and hospitality of our Cathedral whenever the finance committee determines funding is available: repair the north and east entrances to the Cathedral including new handrails; bring the breezeway ramp up to code; construct a ramp and rails to the Music Academy entrance; repair all stonework; install new covers on all windows in the Cathedral; renovate landscaping in the south garden; construct a nursery/cry room in the Cathedral; and install new interior and exterior signage to the campus. So far $90,450 has been pledgedover a five year period for capital improvement projects.
