1 Dressing Up and Stepping Out By Karen Hall Cheryl Harris Pam Buchanan TITLE Women s Sunday PURPOSE This is a full service for a Women s Sunday program. Feel free to use as much or as little of it as your worship style, church and pastor allow. SCRIPTURE Colossians 3:12 17 PREPARATION NEEDED Decide on an order of service. The suggested plan included may be altered to fit your church s particular worship format. The praise and special music suggestions can be replacements for any hymns you d prefer not to use. All hymn numbers are from Hymns of Heritage & Hope. It is not included in this document, but there is a FUN-PUN FASHION SHOW in the supplemental section, which you might find enjoyable to include in your service, if you have the time. Should you choose this, you will need models and outfits for a funny fashion show. There are MANY more options than most groups will have time to present. Choose the ones you feel will work best for your ladies. Choose ladies with a good attitude, as you ll be asking them to dress in quite unorthodox clothing. You ll also need a mistress of ceremonies to narrate someone with good speaking skills who will be prepared to encounter much laughter as your models parade down the runway! For the MESSAGE, you will need a main speaker and six ladies who will speak times about their assigned qualities. If there are not six women to help, then women can represent more than one characteristic. You will need signs for the ladies to display their qualities as they are talked about. Alternatively, you may choose to use PowerPoint instead of signs. You may also have the definitions and explanations shown as the women read these. Be as simple or elaborate as you desire. Pinterest has pictures and ideas that you may choose to utilize. You will also need six different kinds of flowers, listed below. The flower choices may be changed as desired. The last items needed are a 2 3 wide bright red ribbon about 18 long and a flower vase. The vase should be placed on the communion table ahead of the program time. The ribbon should be held by a woman in the audience to be used at the end of the program. QUALITIES TO PUT ON FLOWERS DEFINITIONS EXPLANATIONS What does it look like? How do I know I have it? 1. Compassion 2. Kindness a single pink rose baby s breath Compassion Love your enemies! Do good to them. You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate (Luke 6:35 37). She opens her mouth with wisdom and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue (Proverbs 31:26). Compassion is a commitment. It s not something we have or don t have, but something we choose to practice. Kindness is like snow. It beautifies everything it covers. 41

2 QUALITIES TO PUT ON FLOWERS DEFINITIONS EXPLANATIONS What does it look like? How do I know I have it? 3. Humility 4. Gentleness 5. Patience 6. Forgiveness some type of greenery commonly found in bouquets a daisy a carnation chrysanthemum Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves (Philippians 2:3). Let your gentleness be evident to all (Philippians 4:5). Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains. You, too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord s coming is near (James 5:7). For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins (Matthew 6:15). Humility is selfless, not selfish, it doesn t demand its own way or speak with moral superiority. Instead, humility answers softly and listens kindly for understanding not vindication. I choose gentleness. If I raise my voice, may it be only in praise. If I clench my fists, may it be only for prayer. I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love (Ephesians 4:1b 2). Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you (Colossians 3:13). Our theme for 2017 is Dressing Up and Stepping Out with our theme verses found in Colossians 3: It is unlikely to surprise anyone that women would look at how we should be dressing up and stepping out! As women, we do spend time considering our clothing, worrying about our choices, and often lamenting, I don t have a thing to wear! while looking in a full closet. While we know that both men and women are aware of their clothing, society does seem to focus more on what women wear. Statistics tell us that in 2013 the average American woman spent $150 $400 per month on clothing! The average woman will spend $15,000 on make-up in her lifetime and $3,770 on mascara alone! Even harder to believe is the statistic that says the average woman will spend $44,300 on a hair stylist! Now, that is incredible! Those numbers seem to be impossible to believe. We do know, however, that our appearance is very important to us. We are judged by our appearance, and, YES, we do judge others by their appearance as well! There is certainly nothing wrong with being concerned about our appearance. It has been a common concern throughout the generations. That is why Paul chose to use the example of putting on or clothe yourselves in the Colossians verses. Let s read these verses. Read Colossians 3: (While reading these verses have 1 6 women come out, each carrying a sign and a single flower, and be seated in the front where they can be seen.) Notice that Paul is speaking directly to fellow believers, he is not addressing those who have not accepted Jesus as Savior. How sweet it is to be called, God s chosen people, holy and dearly loved. The world may call us ignorant, unlovely, hypocrites, and on and on. But God calls us chosen, holy, and dearly loved. Think about that for a moment. God loves you dearly! He has chosen you! He is making you holy! Since we are chosen, holy and dearly loved, the Lord has a special wardrobe for us to wear. What does this wardrobe look like? (Reread verses 12 13, then have each woman stand with her sign and read her definition.) Woman 1 stands and says, Compassion Love your enemies! Do good to them. You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate (Luke 6:35 37). Woman can sit. Woman 2 stands and says, Kindness She opens her mouth with wisdom and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue (Proverbs 31:26). Woman can sit. Woman 3 stands and says, Humility Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves (Philippians 2:3). Woman can sit. 43

4 Woman 4 stands and says, Gentleness Let your gentleness be evident to all (Philippians 4:5). Woman can sit. Woman 5 stands and says, Patience Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord s coming is near. (James 5:7) Woman can sit. Woman 6 stands and says, Forgiveness For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins (Matthew 6:15). Woman can sit. Reading about these qualities is helpful, but they may still seem as hard to get as some material object we would love to have but it is out of our reach financially. We see a new car in the showroom and picture ourselves driving down the road in it. We watch home improvement shows and imagine a wrecking ball smashing the house we have and replacing it with a modern, beautiful home. We see a picture in a magazine or on the internet and know we would look so much better if we could just afford that plastic surgery. Finances can keep us from attaining many dreams. Even if we are able to afford that new car, house or face, we quickly find ourselves longing for something else. We are never quite satisfied. What Paul tells us to put on may seem just as unattainable, though not due to finances, of course. Putting on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience and being forgiving is just hard to do! They require sacrifice. They require time. They require letting God change us. Just when we think we are putting the virtues on, or even just one on, they slip away! Timothy Keller s comment about humility explains this well: Humility is so shy. If you begin talking about it, it leaves. What are we to do? How do we know we have these qualities? (Each woman will stand again in turn.) Woman 1 stands and says, Compassion is a commitment. It s not something we have or don t have, but something we choose to practice. Woman 2 stands and says, Kindness is like snow. It beautifies everything it covers. Woman 3 stands and says, Humility is selfless, not selfish, it doesn t demand its own way or speak with moral superiority. Instead, humility answers softly and listens kindly for understanding not vindication. Woman 4 stands and says, I choose gentleness, if I raise my voice may it be only in praise. If I clench my fists, may it be only for prayer. Woman 5 stands and says, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love (Ephesians 4:1b 2). Woman 6 stands and says, Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you (Colossians 3:13). Now we know what we are to put on, but how do we keep these qualities? Let s re-read verses (Read verses. As these verses are being read, each woman should stand one at a time, place their single flower on the communion table beside the vase, then return to their seats.) Let s read verse 14 one more time. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Love is the overwhelming characteristic required in the Bible. 1 Corinthians 13 reminds us that love is greater than all other gifts, in fact 1 Corinthians 13:4 8a says, Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it 44

5 keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. These verses teach us that we can indeed have compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience and the ability to forgive only when we have love. How can we have love enough to develop these characteristics? 1 John 4:7 12 tells us, Dear friends let us love one another, for love come from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and His love is made complete in us. If, as we read in Colossians, we are God s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, we, too, must love as God loves. This is not easy, but, it is possible because, if God lives in us, his love is made complete in us. Let s hear the verses from Colossians 3 again. (Read Colossians 3: As this is being read, one woman should walk to the communion table carrying the red ribbon. She should stand so the congregation can see what she is doing. As the Scripture is read, she should pick up each flower and place them in the vase. When verse 14 is read, she should tie the ribbon around the flowers and then pick up the bouquet. She should stand holding the bouquet until verse 17 is read, and she should then take the bouquet and give it to a visitor, to the oldest member present, or to someone else appropriate.) Let us pray. Father, thank you that we are a chosen people, holy and dearly loved. Guide us as we put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Help us to forgive. Father, give us love for one another. Make us like you. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.
