PLEASE, Silence Your Cell Phone! Thank you. Remembering: Remembering To Be Like Christ Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! Today we close out our Season of Remembering here at CoH. Throughout this month we have taken time to honor and give thanks for lives lived that have made a difference. I believe that it is important for us to both remember, and express our thanks to, those who are pioneers, those who have encouraged us or shed a light, holding it out for us to see and to follow. Our Season of Remembering has shed that light and it leads us to the very heart of the Gospel and its compelling message. Gospel means good news. Today we once again look to the good news as we are invited to take seriously the compelling story of Jesus and the invitation to follow in Christ s footsteps, to become imitators of those parts of the Gospel story which we find compelling in our own lives and, ultimately, to become Christ-like ourselves. Our remembering, and standing on the shoulders of, those who came before us, including Jesus, therefore calls us to be agents of change and transformation transforming ourselves and, through our actions and impact, transforming the world. Jesus was a change agent. Yes, he was Savior and Redeemer, but in his earthly life, he was a change agent. He took a group of unlikely suspects in ancient Israel and, through his example, opened their lives and their hearts to something greater. Jesus taught them to challenge systems and beliefs, to embrace their power and to be responsible for their lives and their relationship with the Divine. He reminded them that they were deeply loved by God and that, if they would open themselves up to new possibilities to the presence of the Holy Spirit in their own lives they too would be able to do and be all that Jesus was to them, and is to us. As they did, we can become Christ-like and, through our actions, make the world a better place for all. It seems to me that the world needs a little more Christ-like-ness. It needs to express the values that Jesus teaches. Compassion, kindness, hope, healing, and forgiveness are just some of the values that Christ-like-ness evokes in us and, because of this, invites us to claim the name of Christ, the title Christian. We don t become a Christian because we believe in a statement of faith or a set of dogmas; we are Christians because we do the things of Jesus we become Christ-like. Next Sunday we observe the beginning of the season of Advent and thus begin a journey to celebrate the birth of Jesus, with its unfolding drama and extraordinary possibilities for humankind, both historically and today. We will hold out again the hope, joy, peace, and love of the season, and prepare ourselves, spiritually, to find a renewed faith, a reclaimed faith, a meaningful experience of the Divine God with and among us. I do hope that you will plan to share the Advent season with us at CoH. Sincerely, in Christ The Reverend Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Senior Pastor HOPEQuotes Time seems not to permit me to participate in the entire service electronically for now (and I miss that). Thank you for providing the sermon as a stand alone video. All Saints is one of my most cherished Sundays each year. Thank you for tying in your experience in St. Louis. Mark Hayes and Tracy Icenogle John Arney, flute; Jordan Britt, trumpet; Les Holben, piano Charlotte Duke, bass; Ellen Gay & Mary Knudsen, percussion Beautiful Savior WORSHIP NOTES Insight into the various musical elements of our services Beautiful Savior This anonymous German text Schönster Herr Jesu was first published in 1677 as part of a collection of hymns and tunes issued by Jesuits living in Münster, Westphalia, now part of Germany. Although it is sometimes referred to as the Crusader s Hymn, there is no documentation that it was sung by those twelfth-century pilgrims who journeyed to the holy land. The English version of the hymn became popular in the United States only after it was paired with this tune, SCHÖNSTER HERR JESU, collected from Silesia by August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben ( ). It is frequently confused with the original seventeenth-century tune that is used more often in Germany. Words: Gesangbuch, Münster, 1677; trans. Joseph A. Seiss, alt. 5 **GOSPEL LESSON Matthew 25: One: God be with you. All: And also with you. One: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. All: Glory to you, O God. Rev. Sherry Hilliard At the appointed time the Promised One will come in glory, escorted by all the angels of heaven, and will sit on the throne with all the nations gathered below. Then the Promised One will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. The sheep will be placed on the right hand and the goats on the left. Then the ruler will say to those on the right, Come, you that are blessed by God, inherit the realm prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me. Then the righteous will ask, When was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you? And the ruler will answer them, Truly I tell you, just as you did it for one of the least of my sisters or brothers, you did it for me. One: All: This is the Gospel of Hope. Praise to you, Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit. **GLORIA Word and Music by Danny Ray arr. Steven Couch Cathedral of Hope CCLI License # SERMON Remembering To Be Like Christ Jesus Shall Reign (on page 5) Isaac Watts ( ) paraphrased the second half of Psalm 72 as the basis for this hymn. It is a classic example of Watts practice of adding Christian concepts to psalm texts, yielding a new form of congregational song. As was the practice in his time, only the psalms were sung during worship. Watts was known as the father of modern hymnody. The ill health he suffered because of intensive periods of study in his early years gave him more time to write some six hundred hymns. The tune DUKE STREET was credited to John Hatton (c ) in Dixon s Euphonia (1805). It had been published anonymously in 1793 with a text called Addison s 19th Psalm. The tune is named after the street where Hatton lived in St. Helen s, England. 3

All Are Welcome Let us build a house where love can dwell and all can safely live, A place where saints and children tell how hearts learn to forgive. Built of hopes and dreams and visions, rock of faith and vault of grace; Here the love of Christ shall end divisions: All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place. Let us build a house where love is found in water, wine and wheat; A banquet hall on holy ground, where peace and justice meet. Here the love of God, through Jesus, is revealed in time and space; As we share in Christ the feast that frees us: All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place. Thy Word Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Waiting in Silence, Waiting in Hope An Advent Journey Come, Lord Jesus, Come! is the cry of the church during Advent. But in the haste and frantic busyness of this season, we rarely stop to enter the silence, listen to the yearnings of our hearts, and attune ourselves to the still speaking voice of God. So pause this season and engage with others as we read and share responses to the thoughtful reflections of Enuma Okoro s Silence and Other Surprising Invitations of Advent. Prayer, poetry, and art will enrich our time together. Come join others as we await the coming of the Light. The group will meet four Tuesday nights from November 28 to December 19 from 6:30-8 in CLC 106. Please sign up online and read the Preface and the Introduction to Part One by the first meeting. Contact Pat Saxon, facilitator at spiritsister26@aol.com with any questions. Lost and Found No, not the hymn. Did you know that COH has a Lost and Found? Now that winter is upon us, you would be surprised at the number of items left in the Sanctuary, meeting rooms and the Fellowship Hall. Bibles, coats, scarves, umbrellas, shoes, glasses, cell phones and yes even keys, although we have yet to figure out how these people get home. Most items left are never retrieved. We log the lost items and keep them for three months. After three months, we donate as appropriate. If you realize you are missing something after attending services, please give John or Brandon a call at Pack the Pantry TODAY Cathedral of Hope and Dallas Hope Charities relies on you, your friends, family, neighbors and co-workers to replenish our pantry on the last Sunday of each month. Doing so helps us to distribute about 5,000 bags of groceries each year to those who might otherwise go without. No worries you still have time to shop and bring your groceries by 1 p.m. No dented cans or expired foods, please. This shopping list also appears on dallashopecharities.org and cathedralofhope.com. 9 Children and Families Ministry 2017 Children s Christmas Play, The Road to Bethlehem. Do you have a child in our Children and Families Ministry of Cathedral of Hope? You might want to think about the wonderful opportunity for them to be a part of the 2017 Children s Christmas Play, The Road to Bethlehem. There will be rehearsals, and one performance on Christmas Eve morning at 10 a.m. There are still parts available for those who like to speak up front and for those who don t, there will be plenty of angels and shepherds. Sign up in the area where you drop off your children, or contact Dan Peeler at dpeeler@cathedralofhope.com. What the youth are learning this week: Wandering This week, we discuss the Israelites wandering in the desert for forty years. At this point, they are a nomadic people, with no permanent home, wandering about in the desert wilderness. They traversed the dry, rugged terrain enduring severe heat by day, and frigid temperatures at night. A nomadic tribe does not have the security of crops and waters, often making the next meal tough to attain. The Israelites had to learn to rely on God to provide for them, even the midst of dire circumstances. Think about it and discuss amongst yourselves: What would it be like living in the desert? Why do you think the Israelites lacked trust in God? The Israelites were afraid to enter the promised land. What would you do to encourage them? How would you address all of their complaints? Why do you think God listens to Moses, when he intercedes for Israel? Contact Alan Miles at amiles@cathedralofhpe.com with any questions about Youth Ministry Thanksgiving Baskets A Huge Success! Thanks to our ever-generous congregation, we surpassed our goal of 375 and actually brought in 410 Thanksgiving Baskets! That means that 410 families were able to enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving meal because of you. In an incredible team effort, led by Michael Kimery, 50 volunteers, ages 8-71, put in over 250 cumulative hours to make that happen. Sheila Coughlin put in countless hours before the event so that families would have a meal to share for the holidays. Their stories and faces make this project worthwhile. Thank you again to all who donated their time, money, and prayers that helped us surpass our goal. Table Talk: Small Group Opportunity Continues THIS Tuesday, November 28, 7 p.m. Fellowship Hall Would you break the law to save someone? Would you be a martyr and risk your reputation by standing up for what is right in front of your peer, or is it better to be pragmatic and do nothing? Would you lie about your beliefs if you knew doing so would save your life or another s? Continuing with November s PULSE Worship theme, Table Talk, gathers on Tuesday evenings in November to participate in small group round-table-style discussions on a range of stimulating topics and ethical questions. 13 Children, Youth, & Cyber-Safety January 14, 12:30-2 p.m., East Wing, 195 Bullying has reached epidemic proportions in our country, resulting in ruined lives or even suicides in many cases. In our efforts to keep the parents of our children and youth informed about how to handle or prevent this tragedy, we have asked Jetonda Green, LMSW Community Health Outreach Specialist, System SANE Department Safety & Well-Being Prevention Program to lend her expertise on the subject to us on Sunday, January 14. Her mission is to provide parents and their children awareness and prevention education on internet safety, so that they can cultivate and promote healthy norms to prevent sexual abuse as well as family and relationship violence in their communities. Parents will be instructed on how to raise awareness of risks with identity theft and scammers, and of risks when youth are on social media, including cyber-bullying. Parents will be able to identify signs of traffickers who try to recruit online, and become aware of digital dating abuse for older youth. The workshop will last 60 minutes. All parents of both children and youth are welcome to this important, life-saving event. Contact Alan Miles at with questions. CORNERSTONE FUND: The United Church of Christ s Cornerstone Fund has new rates on its term investments as of August 1, If you have been thinking about placing an investment with the Cornerstone Fund, where you save with an Interest Rate Rebate, this is an excellent time to do so. Not only do you benefit personally, but you help Cathedral of Hope, as well. Cathedral of Hope has its mortgage with the Cornerstone Fund. Investments of members and friends in the Cornerstone Fund could save us up to 1% on loan interest each year! Ready to earn a rebate? It s easy. Here s how it works: Choose your Cornerstone Fund investment with a minimum of $50 for a demand account, most people can participate. On your investment form, indicate Cathedral of Hope as the name of the church you want your investment to help. If you choose, encourage others to join you. Or keep your investment confidential. No one in your church will know how much you have invested, and you may add or withdraw funds as you desire according to the terms of your investment. To continue building Cathedral of Hope s future and earn an attractive return on your own investment, check the rates and download a prospectus and investment application today at Direct questions to Patricia Patsy Bjorling, Director of Development at pbjorling@cathedralofhope.com or , x

14 Will Your Employer Match Your Gift to Cathedral of Hope or Dallas Hope Charities? You may be able to stretch the impact of your giving by participating in an employer matching gift program. Many companies sponsor matching gift programs that match charitable contributions made by their employees. Some companies also match gifts made by retirees, spouses, or persons serving on Boards. Still others leverage the volunteer hours contributed by their employees to non-profits by matching the donated TIME with company dollars. These programs are a great way for businesses to support the philanthropic activities of their employees, while providing support to the communities in which they are located. Most companies with matching gift programs match gifts on a 1:1 ratio, while a few companies match gifts 2:1 or more. Some programs but not all exclude churches. Most should include Dallas Hope Charities, the foundation arm of Cathedral of Hope. Ask your human resources department if your company has a matching gift program. Each program has guidelines and procedures for the employee to follow to trigger matching gifts from the company to the charity chosen by the employee. Situated in our lovely memorial garden, it provides a beautiful above ground resting place for you or your loved one. Each niche can hold two urns, 5 x 5 x 7. The average cost of a traditional burial in Texas is approximately $10,000, yet inurnment in a columbarium can cost as little as $1,000 for cremation, plus the price of your selected niche. Price of the top two rows of niches in the round columbarium is $4,200 each; niches in the bottom two rows are $3,600 each. Interest free financing is available over a 24-month period, with a $500 deposit. For more information, contact: Patricia Patsy Bjorling, pbjorling@cathedralofhope.com or , x198. Join the Bell Wall Society The Bell Wall Society is a group of individuals who have let the church know that they have made a commitment in their estate plans to benefit the Cathedral of Hope. The commitment may be a simple bequest, a life insurance policy, an IRA or similar retirement savings vehicle, a gift annuity, or any other gift that will come to Cathedral of Hope after an individual s passing. The monies from these gifts will undergird Cathedral of Hope s future, especially by building the church s endowment and enabling capital projects. Cathedral of Hope celebrates these special gifts on a recognition plaque which is located immediately inside the main doors of the church. Once a year the group will gather to welcome its newest members. There are currently 59 couples and individuals who are part of the Bell Wall Society. For more information about making an estate gift, contact Patricia (Patsy) Bjorling, MDiv, pbjorling@cathedralofhope.com, or , x198. The Joy of Serving From Charlotte Duke as told to Bill Prickett When I first started coming to CoH, known as MCC Dallas at the time, I just sat in a pew like most visitors do. One Sunday there was a request during morning announcements for someone with a drill. The church was pretty small then, there were only a few women in the congregation, so I was probably the only person there who had a drill. That was the first time I volunteered for the church and it led to many other opportunities to use my drill. For example, around 1985 I built the rolling platform that our organ still sits on today. David Moldenhauer really hopes that I did a good job! My point is, God can use whatever small talents we may have, and in return we receive large blessings. We just have to open the door when the opportunity knocks. We all have some talent that can be used to benefit others. Another example of a volunteer opportunity that presented itself is our Saturday morning hair cutting ministry. I am not a barber, but one day the thought came to me that the people who come to BACH need haircuts so they won t be treated with disrespect, so they can apply for jobs, and so they can feel better about themselves. The simple act of giving a haircut can do all this! This volunteer ministry is infinitely more rewarding than the times I used my drill because I know I am providing a blessing to others who really need one. This is why I volunteer. If this story touches you, and you want to find a ministry in which to serve, contact Anita Haddy, Director of Ministry & Volunteer Development at ahaddy@cathedralofhope.com or x135.
