2 God is good! That s the second part of the core of faith according to Richard Rohr. God is good. While many perceive God as an angry parent bent on thrashing disobedient children, or worse a stern Judge passing sentence, that s nothing more than a projection of ourselves onto God. That s how we act; not God. God works through enticement and transformation from within. True, parents discipline their kids but not with a cat-o-nine tails or a switch, let alone a term in prison. Loving parents seek for their kids to grow, to transform from childish ways into good adults. And leaves us with the question, what is good? In St. Mark s Gospel someone addresses Jesus as Good Teacher. Jesus answered them, why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. (Mk 10:17-18) While Philosophers over the centuries have tried to define good, resulting in a number of different understandings of that concept, Jesus answer puts it plain and simple: God alone is good. If the Lord is correct (and he usually is), then we need to look to God to find out what good looks like. Like last week when I wrote about God is God, to begin to find out what good is we need to go back to Genesis. In the first creation story there s a refrain that appears as God is creating the world: and God saw that it was good. After creating humans it reads, and, behold, it was very good. This, I believe, is a starting point. Creation is about bringing things to life. It s all about giving life to the heavens, the earth and all the creatures on the earth including us humans. So good would seem to be connected to giving life. Some theologians argue that giving life is all God does: God brings all things into life from nothing. Even after the Fall, God still gives life to Adam and Eve, albeit very much changed from their original experience of life. He even makes their first set of clothes! God gives life to Cain after he kills Abel by marking him so no one would kill him. God calls Abraham into a new life with him reminiscent of the relationship of God with Adam before the Fall. Of course the Exodus is all about God-given life; forming a people, giving the Torah ( the Law mentioned in the Gospels); leading them to the Promised Land. Throughout the history of ancient Israel, God gave his people life over and over again. And through the Word made flesh God gives salvation (eternal life) to the entire world through forgiveness of sin. Goodness appears to mean life-giving. For us to get a personal understanding of this we need to go back to the day we were created. When the genetic material came together in our mother s womb, I, the person I am today, came to life. If I understand the geneticists correctly, the genetic combination that makes me who I am biologically could have formed a number of different combinations resulting in a very different person. If that were not so, each child born of the same parents would all look the same. Scientist will say this genetic combining is just random. People of faith know it s because God chose to make it so. I am who I am because God chose to make me. God spoke me into life. As I ve mentioned before, all the abilities I have physical or mental come from God. I did not choose them for myself. Neither did I choose my parents, my country or the year I would be born. All this is gift! Even the experiences I have had extended family, friends, schools, opportunities are gifts of God offered for me to expand my knowledge of and living of life, to entice me to transform into a child of God. All is grace; all is gift. Whenever we receive a gift, gratitude urges us to say thank you. Should someone receive a really significant gift (a liver, a kidney, a heart, being grabbed from in front of a speeding car), our gratitude becomes much greater. Well, what about God? From the moment of our conception God has been here the whole time constantly giving to us. Look at a crucifix: God died for us! How do we develop an attitude of gratitude toward God? Mass, the Sacrament of the Eucharist (which means to give thanks ), is one. That s why Mass is an obligation: we owe God thanks. But what about the rest of our lives? How are we the likeness and image of God with the most precious gifts God has given us time, ability and money? To be good means to give life, to be like God. So, how have we given life through the use of these three gifts? That s the gratitude God looks for from us. An attitude of gratitude should be our whole way of living. Do we have the will to help victims free themselves? 54 million Americans older than 15 report they have been a victim of domestic violence. Only 15% think it is a problem among their friend. 73% of parents with children under the age of 18 said they have not talked with them about domestic violence or sexual assault. Learn about the mission and resources of the Archdiocesan Domestic Abuse Outreach program by logging onto Go to Archdiocesan Resources box and select Domestic Violence Committee. If you are a victim or survivor of domestic abuse seeking help, contact: National Hotline: ; (TDD) State of Illinois Helpline: FAITH FORMATION NEWS Faith Formation classes began on September 11. Parents attended the orientation meeting regarding this year s programs. Thank you to all who participated in the first Family Mass hosted by the 7th grades of school and Faith Formation. The next one is October 27 at 9:30 a.m., hosted by the 8th grades. We have begun a Visiting Guardian Angel program. A parent will visit each class on Wednesday evening. To sign up for a date, call the FF office at TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Although the hours of daylight are rapidly dwindling, many people would say that these October days bring the year s most splendid weather. Americans are riders and joggers, not strollers, and so the pleasures of the season are often lost on us. Catholics pile into the car and drive even a short distance to Mass; some even divide the family to participate at different hours. For Jews, the leisurely walk marks a dividing line between hectic life commitments and a day of abundant joy and enrichment. Before we became an automobile culture, Catholics embraced a similar pace, and in most places, walked to church. These Fall days invite us to tap into an old and life-giving tradition. Next week walk to church. If you must drive, park at a good distance and walk the rest of the way. Talk about your life, greet strangers, notice the crunch of leaves under your shoes. You may be surprised at how different Sunday Mass feels when it is framed by leisure. ~James Field, Copyright J.S. Paluch Co. October 20, 2013 Page 3

5 CUB SCOUT RELIGIOUS EMBLEMS The cornerstone of Scouting is a Duty to God. Promoting Cub Scout religious emblems is a strong tradition at St. Louise where we embrace Scouting as youth ministry. Over 80% of our Scouts have earned the religious emblems for their rank. These family activities promote faith and the Scout s relationship with Jesus and the church community. If your Catholic Cub Scout would like to achieve the Light of Christ (1st/2nd grade) or Parvuli Dei (3rd-5th) grade) emblem, John.Panek@sbcglobal.net for full information. Requirements must be completed by January 1 and your Scout would then receive the emblem at our special Scout Sunday Mass on February 9.
