2 Throughout the course of the year the Church universal comes to us asking for money. Each of these requests is for a good cause or to help a genuine need. The Archdiocese sends all churches a list of these special collections each year and I wish to share them with you so you know what s coming throughout 2012: January February March April May June July/August September October November December Church in Latin America Annual Catholic Appeal & Operation Rice Bowl (Lent) Church in Central and Eastern Europe Holy Land Catholic Charities Peter s Pence & Retired Priests Missions Seminaries World Mission Sunday Catholic Campaign for Human Development Retired Religious As I said, each of these collections supports worthwhile causes inviting us to consider the Church beyond the doors of St. Louise de Marillac. We belong to a universal Church (that s what catholic means) and we are responsible for our brothers and sisters around the globe. Within the universal Church we are only one person or one family among literally millions. It is the responsibility of all of those millions to support the needs of the Church around the globe. And we as Church do it! (I refer you to Rediscover Catholicism by Matthew Kelly.) WE is the operative word. We the universal Church contribute to the needs of the poor and suffering. So long as each of us contributes in his or her way according to what our means happen to be, we are doing our part so that the Body of Christ can care for those in need. Our parish, which includes the school, has its own needs. Just like any household we have bills to pay (heat/ electricity, repairs & upkeep, supplies, salaries, etc.) and, because the parish is larger than a single household, our bills tend to be large as well. Our school, especially, costs a great deal to run requiring a large amount of support from the parish income as well as your support of the school fund raisers. That said, we also are people with limited incomes. As St. Paul points out, The relief of others ought not to impoverish you. (II Cor. 8:13) We are not expected to make ourselves poor by giving all our money to others. We need to be wise about all these collections. So, if you can afford to contribute to each of these second collections without taking money from the parish collection, God bless you. If that s not the case in your particular circumstances, then I suggest you take stock. While charity does begin at home, it doesn t end there. Pray for the guidance of the Spirit, remember what you decided during our Stewardship renewal to contribute to the parish this year and then look over the list above deciding which of the second collections you wish to support. What can I afford? To whom will I give what I can afford to give? Once we have answered these questions, we can be at ease in conscience knowing that we have done all we can do. As for the rest, pray for the intention of that second collection but disregard the envelope and don t feel guilty. The Church is made of human beings and only human beings. We humans tend to focus on what s in front of our faces and forget the bigger picture. We need these special collections to remind us of that bigger picture, but we don t need to go on a guilt trip if we are honestly giving according to our means. God doesn t expect us to do more than we are able. Pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit regarding these second collections, then give as your heart leads you. After that, discard the remaining envelops for second collections with a clear conscience. God loves a cheerful giver, not an anxious or broke one. Fr. Denis January 15, 2012 Page 2

You also have the option of picking it up at the rectory on Fridays. HOLY HOUR FOR LIFE On January 22, 2012, our nation marks the 39th anniversary of the tragic U.S. Supreme Court decision, Roe v. Wade, legalizing abortion on demand throughout all nine months of pregnancy. There is a special Holy Hour for Life on Sunday, January 22 at 12:15 p.m. in church, including Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction with Deacon Kevin presiding. LOUISE TEENS GOING TO APPALACHIA St. Louise is sending two groups of teens to Appalachia the second week of July 2012 through the Appalachian Service Project to repair the homes of deserving families. Two adult females are still needed. Please consider this worthwhile ministry. No construction experience is necessary. All that is needed is the desire to help out with a worthwhile ministry. SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE The Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women is, once again, offering a $1,000 renewable scholarship for high school girls who are continuing their education. GREEK AND LATIN ROOT UPDATE This past Friday, our fifth through eighth graders received their presentation on the Greek and Latin Root vocabulary development program. The faculty had their training during an in-service workshop with program developers. ANIMAL FAMILIES Our Kindergarten class is preparing for a winter visit to Brookfield Zoo to participate in the Zoo s program on Critter Coverings. They are working on identify various animal families by characteristics and their body coverings. They can t wait to go to the Zoo and learn even more about favorite animals. January 15, 2012 Page 4

Dear Parishioners of St. Louise de Marillac, I am writing to thank you for your generosity this holiday season a generosity that will affect the lives of families in the Chicago community. At a time of year when we are constantly bombarded with announcements of a joyous Christmas and the many offerings that it brings, many forget that not everyone is having a Merry Christmas and that much of what is taken for granted is cause for special celebration in some households. I often view the cynicism with which many react to this holiday season as if unaware that this is the season of giving. It is gratifying to know that other people are supportive of the work we do and are willing to become actively involved in caring for those who are most vulnerable in our society. We are grateful to all the individuals and families who took of their time and money to provide for the need in our community. We pray that God will bless you for the great acts of kindness.
