2 The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary W e celebrate the Assumption of Mary, that she is taken up to heaven by God, in union with Christ. She is someone who truly listened to the Word of God and truly obeyed that Word. This is the glory of Mary and also the glory of the Church. The Feast of the Assumption seems to have its origin in the great council of Ephesus in 431, which defended the motherhood of Mary and affirmed her special title in Greek as Theotokos, the one who brought the Son of God into the world. The Church of Rome accepted this feast in the seventh century. Like the Feast of the Epiphany, the Assumption is an import in the West. It is a Feast that bears witness to our unity within the Catholic Church of both East and West. The Assumption is a Feast we celebrate in unity with our Eastern Orthodox brothers and sisters, especially in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. One of the signs of Catholic unity is deep respect and veneration for Mary, the Mother of Christ the Lord. We sing hymns in her honor; we venerate images of her in public; we esteem her obedience to God and her faith. All of this is done in both East and West, by Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, and Oriental Orthodox. Even many Lutherans and Anglicans sing the praises of Mary and cherish her witness. Why is this? The Gospel gives us the most important reason. We might think that her motherhood would be decisive, but that is not what Jesus says. In fact, somebody did think that motherhood would be the main thing. That person cried out, Blest is the womb that bore you and the breasts that nursed you. In other words, you are a great preacher, Jesus. Your mother must have been a saint. Jesus corrects that person who cried out and says: Rather, blest are they who hear the Word of God and keep it. That, precisely, is the glory of Mary that she heard the Word and obeyed that Word. Why did Jesus say this? Surely, Mary was a holy woman. Surely, she was conceived without sin. But Jesus was making a point that affects our lives. He said what is important in the kingdom is not who your blood relatives are but whether or not you listen to the Word of God, whether or not you obey the Word of God. For us, this is really good news. Jesus Christ is not saying his mother was not a holy woman. He is saying that whatever holiness Mary had came from her obedience to God s Word. And the good thing about that is this. Like Mary, the Church herself, like an obedient woman, can hear the Word and obey it. All of us, if we only do what Mary did, can achieve the same kind of holiness. Let us hear what Jesus teaches, then; and let us do what he tells us, that we too will be assumed into heaven when our time comes, when Christ will hand over the kingdom to the Father, as Scripture says. HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION Wednesday, August 15 is the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and a Holy Day of Obligation. Masses are Tuesday, August 14 at 7:00 p.m. (Vigil) and Wednesday, August 15 at 8:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. The scripture readings for both the vigil Mass and the Mass of the day speak to us of life after death as well as the path to be followed in order to reach it. 4 SELFLESS LOVE In only the last few years, we have experienced rampant disregard for religious beliefs in this country with the approval of embryonic stem cell research; legal justification for the torture of prisoners; the provision of tax dollars to abortion providers; the HHS mandates; and, most recently, a redefinition of marriage by many of our leading political figures. We can see that there is a loss of a sense of truth here, and objective moral norms rules of conduct that apply always, to everyone, everywhere and an eclipse of a sense of God and man....to this culture of death the Church boldly and joyfully promotes the culture of life. We recognize that we humans are at our best when we give ourselves away in selfless love and live no longer for ourselves, but for another. This is what Pope John Paul the Great calls the law of the gift, echoing the words of Jesus that, No one has greater love than this, than to lay down one s life for one s friends. Children with disabilities deserve to grow in faith, and this program is devoted to serving them. The Archdiocese of Chicago has been a leader in this area of special religious education for over 30 years and in our parish a team of parish volunteers is trained to work with developmentally disabled children in the area of faith development. 5 MISSION SPEAKER THIS WEEKEND This weekend we welcome Harry Fouche, Liaison, from the Diocese of Jeremie in Haiti which is situated in Haiti s southern most tip within the territory of the Grande Anse province. He will speak to us about the work the priests and religious do in the schools, hospitals, and clinics, of the great needs of the diocese and the plight of the population. Many social programs are sponsored by the Church to address illiteracy, high unemployment and vocational training programs. He asks for our financial help to enable the Catholic Church to continue the missionary work done in Haiti, thus realizing the work of salvation Christ calls upon all of us to do. THANK YOU EVERYONE! Words cannot express the appreciation for the Retirement Party given for me several weeks ago it was very, very nice. A big Thank You to Linda Noonan and Maureen Johnson and also to those who helped before, during and after the party. Thanks also go to the organizations that brought food to share (beautiful & bountiful buffet/sweets table!) It was a delightful day and one that my family and I truly enjoyed. I loved visiting and reminiscing with those who attended and I will always have fond memories of my many years at St. Louise School.
