2 P 2 S, A 26, 2018 Dear Friends in Christ, Sexual Abuse Scandals The revelations of recent weeks have been very dif icult for all Catholics. The Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report revealed horri ic crimes and sins committed by priests over 70 years. That news is very disturbing and upsetting. I ind that people are more angry and upset about the actions of some bishops who concealed these crimes in order to protect the reputation of the Church. I am hopeful that Pope Francis and our bishops will lead with the mind and heart of Christ which will bring about the renewal and reform that is needed in our Church. Much has been done in recent decades but we obviously have a ways to go. Jesus is at the center of his Church but the human members can really mess it up, even bishops. Human sinfulness has been around since The Fall in the Garden of Eden. When sinful, damaging behaviors occur, the people of the Church should expect that they are dealt with by our leaders according to the laws of our land, the moral principles that low from the Gospel message of Jesus, and the teachings of the Church. People can handle the truth even if it is a painful truth. It is concealment that is intolerable. It was Jesus who said the truth will set you free. Our hearts break for those lives that have been damaged by clergy abuse. We need to pray for their healing and the healing of their families. We need to pray for our Church leadership that they lead in a Christ-like manner at all times. During this time we need courageous leadership in the Church to restore trust and bring about healing. We need to pray for all Catholics so that they do not lose their faith in God or the Church during these tough times. The Lord needs our witness of faith in the world. The deepest desire of the devil is that Christians throw in the towel and give up. I would also ask you to pray for the bishops and priests of the church, the vast majority who serve with integrity and faithfulness. Pope Francis recently wrote a letter to the whole Church in response to this crisis. You can ind it at You can also ind a statement from Bishop Malloy and Cardinal DiNardo on the Rockford diocesan website. This Wednesday, I am having a gathering at the Crane Road Church, Dempsey Hall in response to the sexual abuse crisis. I have been asked many questions by parishioners, so I thought it would be bene icial to a have a meeting to share my re lections on the issues and to respond to parishioner questions. My hope and prayer is that our Church comes out of this painful time more puri ied, renewed, and holy. May God bless all of you. In Christ, Msgr. Steve Responding to the Sexual Abuse Crisis Led by Msgr. Steve Knox In Dempsey Hall at the Crane Road Campus On Wednesday, August 29th from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
