2 PAGE 2 SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2017 Dear Friends in Christ, Revenge, Retaliation or the Way of Jesus? Today s gospel passage from the Sermon on the Mount from the Gospel of Matthew presents one of the challenging parts of being a disciple. Jesus says things like turn the other cheek, love your enemies, pray for those who persecute you. Jesus also talks about going the extra mile for others. In order to live this type of love, forgiveness, and forbearance, we need the grace of God to lift us up to a new way of thinking and living. This manner of Christian living is in contrast with the eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth vengefulness that marked the old law. Martin Luther King Jr. one time said that the old law of an eye for an eye leaves everyone blind. There s a great deal of truth in that insight. Exacting revenge produces short term feelings of relief, but it never elevates the dignity of the one exercising the revenge. When it comes to the Lord s prayer, there s an old saying that it is quickly memorized, but only slowly internalized and put into practice. How true that is for the petition in the Our Father where we pray forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. God is very generous in forgiving us and he never holds a grudge or a resentment, even if our remorse for our sins is de icient. He continually invites us to have humility and true contrition so that he can wipe out our sins and guilt. As we experience the abundant mercy of God in our own lives, we are better equipped to share that forgiveness with others. The devil loves it when we hold on to grudges, hatred, and resentments. That makes for a great seedbed for the evil one to sow additional seeds of malice and vice. It s not easy to forgive someone who has hurt you. They may not be sorry for what they have done or they may be oblivious or even mean spirited. We always need to have appropriate boundaries in our relationships and Jesus isn t saying we should be doormats. What he is saying is that we can ingest the spirit of the world which is about revenge and retaliation. We have to follow the example of Jesus on the Cross and let go of the need for revenge which will only diminish us. It may take time to truly forgive and let go of hatred, but with God s help and with his abundant grace, he will help us move in a spiritually healthy way. To inding healing and forgiveness for life s deepest hurts, we re going to need God s help. Let s ask God to help us truly put the Lord s prayer into practice. Our lives and our world need more forgiveness, mercy and reconciliation. May we be blessed to be instruments of God s peace. In Christ, Msgr. These fasting & abstinence regulations are observed: ABSTINENCE: NO Meat is observed on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all Fridays of Lent by All Catholics 14 years and older. FASTING: is observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics 18 years old, but not yet 59. Those bound by the rule may take one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Low-Gluten Hosts Are Available Persons with Celiac disease are unable to consume communion hosts used at Mass because of an intolerance to gluten. A host has been developed and was given Vatican approval. Most people with celiac disease are able to consume these hosts. When receiving the low-gluten host, we ask that you receive from the priest; he will have a special pyx in his ciborium which will contain the special hosts. When you come up to the priest, simply say special host, and he ll provide that for you. If you or someone you know is homebound and has celiac disease or gluten intolerance issues and they would like to receive communion at home, call Judy or Jenny in the Parish Office at

Fr. Pete Schavitz, a Redemptorist priest from St. Louis, will be here leading our Parish Mission. Fr. Pete is a dynamic speaker who has been leading parish renewal experiences for almost 25 years. Fr. Pete s background includes presenting retreats to people of all ages. He has served as a seminary professor and has been involved in vocation ministry and parish ministry as well as several radio and video projects. Fr. Pete is a seasoned parish mission preacher since 1985, whose faith, stories, humor, and words continue to spiritually impact thousands. With nearly 300 parish missions to his credit, they have been very well received. As a native Chicagoan, he always looks forward to returning to this area. What is a Parish Mission? It is an extraordinary preaching event meant to help you and your family grow in your faith. It s for everyone in the parish because we all have room to grow. In addition to speaking at all of the Masses on the weekend of March 25 & 26, Fr. Pete will lead a service each evening, Sunday through Thursday, beginning at 6:30 p.m. and lasting about an hour and fifteen minutes. Following the service, there will be refreshments for all participants. Do you have to attend every night? That would be ideal, but you can attend any night that fits your schedule. All Are Welcome!
