2 PAGE 2 SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2017 Dear Friends in Christ, Feed My Starving Children Event Many of you have heard of the organization Feed My Starving Children. They are an excellent organization that helps to provide meals for the poor around the world. Most volunteer groups go to their facility in Aurora or Schaumburg to package the food which will be shipped to areas in need. Feed My Starving Children also goes out to parishes and churches with mobile units so that even more volunteers can participate. We have such an event coming up on Saturday, October 28 in Dempsey Hall on Crane Road. Our Knights of Columbus Council is organizing the event so that St. Patrick and St. John Neumann parishioners can participate on a large scale. Our Knights Council is calling our event Mercy for the Starving, in connection with the corporal work of mercy that calls for us to feed the hungry. Our hope is that hundreds of parishioners will volunteer on three different two hour shifts so that we can meet our meal packing goal of 101,088 meals. Feed My Starving Children staff will be here to coordinate our efforts so that it goes smoothly. They will bring in a truckload of components for the making of the manna packs. The ingredients are white rice, textured soy protein, dehydrated vegetables and vegetarian lavoring with a vitamin and mineral blend. The manna packs will then be shipped to locations to help feed those in need. This will be an excellent volunteer opportunity for all age groups. Families can also participate together. The costs for the event will be paid by the two parishes and the Knights of Columbus and the Knights of Columbus Women s Auxiliary. The total cost for the food, packaging, and transportation is $22,239 which puts the cost for each meal at approximately $0.22. St. John Neumann Parish and the Knights have already contributed $13,000 to date. St. Patrick s portion of the cost will be paid through parishioner donations and a number of parish tithes. If you would like to make a contribution to this good cause, donations can be put in an envelope with the designation Feed My Starving Children Event. If you are writing a check, it needs to be made out to St. Patrick Parish. In the memo line you can write Feed My Starving Children. I d like to thank the Knights for their leadership on this project. Their goals are to ful ill one of the corporal works of mercy by feeding the hungry, and provide a community building event that brings together the two St. Charles parishes for a great cause. Details on how you can Volunteer at this event are in the ad below and on our parish website. In Matthew 25, Jesus said, Whatever we do for the least of our brothers or sisters, we do for him. May many lives be touched by the love of Christ through this Mercy for the Starving service event! In Christ, Msgr. Steve

Tuesday, September 26th The Church Led by Fr. Manno What is the Church and why is it so important to belong? Why should I belong to the Church if I feel like I can worship God by myself? If Jesus desired for his Church to be one, why are there hundreds of Christian denominations? What is the role of the church in discerning and teaching God s truth? Some Christian denominations believe God reveals himself only in scripture, but Catholics talk about scripture and sacred tradition, can you advise? My kids no longer go to church, how can I reconnect them? Tuesday, October 3rd The Afterlife: Heaven, Hell, Purgatory, Angels and Demons, and the Second Coming of Christ Led by Msgr. Knox What happens to us right after we die? What is heaven like? Will we recognize loved one s who have gone before us? It seems that only Catholics believe in purgatory. What is purgatory and how can we assist those being purified? Can people go to heaven who aren t baptized or who belong to non-christian religions? Do Satan and demonic spirits or angels really exist? When we come before the judgement seat of God, what will we be judged on? Can people who commit suicide be saved? What are we to believe about the Second Coming of Jesus? Is there any issue with being cremated after I die? Tuesday, October 10th The Eucharist and the Mass Led by Fr. Gonnella What do the different parts of the Mass mean? How can ordinary bread and wine be transformed in the body and blood of Jesus? How can I get more out of Mass? Why do we do things like genuflect, make the sign of the cross with holy water and ring bells during Mass? How can we get more young people to engage with the Mass and the Eucharist? Why do some Catholic churches have kneelers and others don t? What is the value of Eucharistic adoration? Tuesday, October 17th The Sacraments at the Service of Communion: Marriage and Holy Orders Led by Deacon Mike Smith and Seminarian John Kladar What exactly does the Church teach about the sacrament of marriage? Many young Catholic couples are no longer being married in the Church, what is driving this trend? What did Jesus teach about marriage? How can the Church support married couples in a world that oftentimes devalues commitment? How does the Church prepare couples to receive this sacrament in our time? What are the steps in becoming a priest or a permanent deacon? What are the pastoral skills and spiritual gifts that are essential for being an effective priest in our day and age? What are the ministry duties of a permanent deacon?

The donations came from school families, parishioners, and community members alike who wanted to make a difference in the lives of those affected by the hurricane. The St. Patrick s Students of Service Club does monthly collections of needed supplies for food pantries, shelters, and other organizations that help those in need in our community as well as abroad. In addition to these monthly collections they also participate in monthly service opportunities such as packing lunches for the local homeless shelters, volunteering at the Northern Illinois Food Bank, Bingo and Christmas caroling at local nursing homes, and many other activities throughout each year.
