2 P 2 S, M 13, 2018 Dear Friends in Christ, The Ascension of the Lord The Ascension of Jesus marks the last time the disciples will see Jesus in the lesh. Jesus has empowered his disciples and the Holy Spirit will come upon them to strengthen them to live and share the Gospel message. The Great Commission that Jesus gives is found in today s gospel: Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. Jesus hands that mission on to his disciples and to us. If we are a person of faith, it is because there have been people in our lives who have shared the gospel with us in word or in deed. Each one of us in our own unique way can be an instrument of God s grace and bring the good news of the gospel to others. This weekend we also commemorate Mother s Day. The vocation of motherhood is a very special one. When it comes to being teachers of the faith, mothers and grandmothers are often given special gifts when it comes to the handing on of our Catholic faith. Many of us irst learned to pray sitting on our mother s lap when we were little children. We pray that the blessings of the Lord be upon all the mothers and grandmothers in our parish. Every mom wishes she had more patience and love, but even with your human struggles, you do have a great impact on the lives entrusted to your care and we are all grateful. Jesus mother Mary is a great intercessor for all of us. Ask her to pray for you so that you and your family stay close to her Son. That is our Blessed Mother s greatest desire, to keep us close to the light of the world, Jesus Christ her Son. May you be strengthened to radiate the love of Christ! Anointing of the Sick after all Masses Next Weekend We know that healing was a very important part of Jesus ministry when he walked the face of the earth. Jesus continues to touch lives with his healing grace through the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. This Sacrament is for anyone who has a serious health condition and is in need of healing. Next weekend there will be an opportunity to receive the Sacrament after each Mass. After the recessional song, those who will receive the Sacrament will come to the front pews of the church. The priest will offer a few prayers and then confer the Sacrament using the oil of the sick which was blessed by Bishop Malloy on Holy Thursday. You may know someone who could bene it from the Sacrament so please consider bringing them to one of the Masses. May the Lord bless all those who are burdened by illness with healing grace to bring them hope and new life! In Christ, Msgr. This annual Appeal supports all of our diocesan ministries and programs such as: Seminarian Educa on, Catholic Chari es, Permanent Diaconate and Lay Ministry Forma on Programs, Catholic Educa on and Religious Educa on Offices, Family Life, and many other vital ministries in our diocese. 3 S, M 13, 2018 P 3 Preparing for Eternity: Catholic Guidelines of End of Life Concerns Thursday, May 17 9:00 to 10:15 a.m. at the Downtown Church 7:00 to 8:15 p.m. at the Crane Road Church Many people have ques ons about end of life concerns. Msgr. Steve and Brian Moss from Moss Funeral Home in St. Charles will be leading the gathering. We will be providing informa on on the prac cal, physical, emo onal and spiritual concerns that everyone faces at the end of life such as: How do you plan for a funeral? Is crema on permissible? Pastoral care of the sick and last rites Can you donate your body to science? How do you choose readings and music for a funeral liturgy Can I do that ahead of me? What are the costs associated with a funeral? End of life issues and a erlife ques ons Your ques ons All are welcome to attend one of the gatherings. Anoin ng of the Sick A er All Masses Weekend of May 19th & 20th The Sacrament of the Anoin ng of the Sick is for those who have a serious health condi on and are in need of healing. We can readily think of physical condi ons that are serious like cancer, diabetes, heart disease and so on. This sacrament can also be helpful for those with serious mental illnesses like severe depression or anxiety, etc. We know that healing was a big part of Jesus ministry, and he con nues to provide his healing touch through his Church. We will ask those who need to be anointed to stay a er Mass on the weekend of May 19th & 20th to be anointed by one of the priests. It should move along fairly quickly.
