2 PAGE 2 SUNDAY, JUNE 11, 2017 Dear Friends in Christ, For God so loved the world ~ John 3:16 Our three readings on Trinity Sunday are very brief, but very poignant. Our belief in God who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit, three persons with one divine nature, is core to the Christian faith. Our God is not distant and aloof. As we heard in the gospel, God so loved the world that he gave his only Son so that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. Our Triune God not only resides in heaven, but also in our hearts through baptism. As we grow in our friendship with God, the love of God grows within and in luences every dimension of our lives. A sign of that growth is seen in how we relate with others. In St. Paul s letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul says: Mend your ways, encourage one another, live in peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you. Father, Son and Holy Spirit are a divine community of life and peace, and as we grow in relationship with God, we are strengthened to be a more loving and virtuous in our relationships with others. We will never be perfect on this side of heaven, but God will help us continue to grow. This summer we are going to be offering a new 4-week summer scripture series on the parables of Jesus. The parables are powerful stories that illustrate truths about God and Christian life. On the following page in the bulletin we have a description of the series. Our minds can never fully understand the fullness of who God is as the Holy Trinity, but the parables of Jesus reveal divine truths and how our God desires for us to live as his disciples. This should be a great series so please come to as many sessions as you can. This is a good opportunity for you to reach out and invite family and friends to join you for the series. There is no charge to participate and we will provide bibles for those who don t have one. This will also give you an opportunity to connect with our new priest, Fr. Gonnella, and John Kladar, a seminarian who is coming on board in late June. I d also like to congratulate all of our graduates. Over the past month there have been graduation celebrations for college, high school, and grade school students. As these young people move on to the next stage of their lives, may the blessings of the Lord be upon them and their families. Congratulations graduates! In Christ, Msgr. Steve Knox On Wednesday, JUNE 14 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. In DEMPSEY HALL on Crane Road Everyone is Invited! Families, Teens & Children to Welcome Fr. Gonnella & Enjoy Food, Fellowship & Fun! We will provide The MEAT, water & lemonade Please bring a dish to pass. RSVP is Preferred on the parish website for the Picnic! Or or Call youthministry@stpatrickparish.org

3 SUNDAY, JUNE 11, 2017 PAGE 3 New Four Week Summer Scripture Series! Reliving the Parables of Jesus Tuesdays: July 11, July 18, July 25, August 1 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. Downtown Fr. Carse Center 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Crane Road Dempsey Hall Led by Msgr. Knox, Fr. Manno, Fr. Gonnella and Seminarian John Kladar Jesus was a master storyteller. His parables illustrate the truths of the Kingdom of God and challenge listeners to look more closely at their lives in light of the spiritual truths that are presented. We ll be reflecting on some of Jesus parables and examining how they can help each one of us grow spiritually. Tuesday, July 11 led by Fr. Manno: Parables About Growth in the Kingdom of God To grow or not to grow? We have the freedom to say yes or no to God s invitation. The parable of the sower and the seed (Mark 4:1-20) illustrates God s desire to help his people grow in faith and virtue. What prevents our spiritual growth? What spiritual practices and disciplines can help us grow in our relationship with God? We ll also look at the parable of the weeds and the wheat (Matthew 13:24-30). Tuesday, July 18 led by Fr. Gonnella: Parables About Forgiveness and Reconciliation Jesus told some powerful stories to illustrate God s forgiveness. They also challenge us to be about forgiveness and reconciliation in our lives and to become more humble. In this session we ll focus on the classic parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32). We ll also explore the challenging parable of The Unmerciful Servant (Matthew 18:21-35). Forgiving others is often difficult to do, but Jesus uses this parable to show us the way to freedom and peace. Tuesday, July 25 led by Seminarian John Kladar: Parables About Growth in Compassion for Others And who is my neighbor? Jesus responds to that question with the parable of The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). A Christ-like compassion challenges us to see all people as our neighbors, regardless of their racial, cultural, religious or ethnic background. The parable of The Rich Man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31) challenges us to see the presence of God in the poor and lowly, and to respond with compassion and generosity. Tuesday, August 1 led by Msgr. Steve Knox: Parables About Being Prepared: Don t Waste Your One and Only Life! We are all given a certain amount of time on earth and God expects us to use our time well. In this gathering we ll be looking at parables that challenge us to develop and share our talents and abilities (Matthew 25:14-30) and to be ready to meet the Lord when our time comes, even if that time comes unexpectedly (Matthew 25:1-13). You are welcome to attend as many sessions as your schedule allows. Registration is not required. Please invite others to join you! No experience in bible study is required to participate, only a desire to learn and grow. We ll have copies of the scriptures available at each session. If you have any questions, please contact Jenny at or jhansen@stpatrickparish.org.
