2 P 2 S, M 17, 2019 Dear Friends in Christ, In our second reading this weekend, St. Paul reminds us of something very important: our citizenship is in Heaven. It is a simple statement, but also a very profound one. If we are not careful we can easily miss the deep significance of these words of St. Paul. To be a citizen means literally to dwell in the city of. We are citizens of our country, our state, our city, etc. However, we are reminded that our Heavenly citizenship is far more important that all the rest of these. If we are called to be citizens of Heaven, then this means we are meant to really dwell in the city of Heaven while we are still here on earth. How are we supposed to do this? One of the ways that we can do this is simply by rejecting the ways of the world. In the same reading, St. Paul calls out those who live according to the ways of the world and are enemies of the Cross of Christ. Their end is destruction. Their God is their stomach; their glory is in their shame. (Philippians 3:19) We are meant to constantly reject the things on this earth that distract us from our Heavenly goal, but even more so during Lent. Fasting helps us to build up our strength to be able to say no to those things that keep us from living out our Heavenly citizenship. Another way we can grow in this area is by following the Heavenly call of the Gospel message. Many of the things that Jesus calls us to do in the Gospel go way above and beyond what we might think to do naturally. In fact, we can say that the call of Jesus Christ in the Gospel is a supernatural one. We are created by God to love Him and to love our neighbors in a supernatural way. Again, we are meant to do this all year round, but Lent affords us a special time to work on this part of our lives. Almsgiving is a great way for us to die to ourselves and to love those around us in need with a supernatural love. The last suggestion that I have for how we can grow in our Heavenly citizenship is by our participation in the Mass. When we participate in the celebration of the Mass, we are truly united to the whole Body of Christ (i.e. with the Church Suffering and the Church Triumphant) We actually experience Heaven on earth when we go to Mass because our Savior Jesus Christ is really made present among us. God literally comes to dwell with us at Mass! There is no greater way for us to have our citizenship in Heaven while we are here on earth than to participate in the celebration of the Mass. Once again, we are called to do this in a special way during Lent. Our increased prayer must always have its source in the Mass, so be very committed to your participation at Mass during this Lenten season. Brothers and sisters, we are pilgrims on a journey while we live on this earth. Our whole goal in life should be directed toward increasing our Heavenly citizenship while we are here, and for eternity to come. Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are great ways for us to keep working toward this goal during Lent and beyond. Let us continue to strive courageously to rid ourselves of earthly attachments and run eagerly into the arms of our Heavenly Father. Give Him everything, and you will not be disappointed. In Christ, Fr. Gonnella SCHEDULE FOR THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS IN ENGLISH AND SPANISH This is a traditional Lenten prayer form that helps us to walk with Christ and grow in our union with him. 6 P 6 S, M 17, 2019 The latest In RCIA News... Rite of Election But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God chose you from the beginning to be saved through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. ~ 2 Thessalonians 2:13 On Saturday, March 9 at the St. Peter Cathedral in Rockford, the 19 RCIA catechumens and candidates celebrated another milestone known as the Rite of Election of the Catechumen and the Call to Continuing Conversion of the Candidates. Having completed the period devoted to reflection on the Word, Catholic teaching, and growth of faith, the catechumens, (now known as the elect), and candidates express their readiness and willingness to be accepted into the fullness of the Catholic faith at the Easter Vigil. The elect and candidates now enter a period of purification and enlightenment intended to purify their hearts and minds. Over the course of the next few weeks, the following rites will be celebrated: three scrutinies, presentation of the Creed, presentation of the Lord s Prayer, and preparation for Holy Saturday. Please join the RCIA team in serving as an example of our faith and praying for the following elect and candidates as they continue to grow in the Spirit: Lorena Bahena, Laura Brester, Taylor Cook, Michael Goetz, Crystal Guerrero, Greg Karamitsos, Nicholas, Jon Kristofer, Joan Kuzniar, Olivia Licher, Jessica Melone, Kevin Mendenhall, Courtney Pryzbylski, Bill Schauer, Jamie Schram, Hilary Stapula, Paul Stippich, Kate Sumka, and Debbie Szemplinski, Meet our Participants... My name is Jon Kristofer. I grew up attending a Lutheran grade school. I studied the bible and learned all about being Christian. I knew all the songs. However, my family was not really involved in the church at all just on the big holidays. As I got older, I fell away from church. My wife got me and our four kids going back to church a few years ago. While there, I realized I had kind of missed going, I remembered a lot of it! I enjoyed being there but felt kind of out of place since I am not Catholic. Last year, I began attending our men's group, That Man Is You, regularly and enjoyed the comradery and began growing in my faith. This year, at the prodding of my 2 nd grade daughter, who is making her First Communion this Spring, I joined RCIA. RCIA is helping me to become a better a Christian, a better person and, hopefully, a better spouse and father. My name is Olivia Licher. I have decided to embark on this journey to Catholicism with the RCIA program because I realized there was something major missing in my life. I did not grow up religious but felt the want to have a relationship with God when I started dating my current boyfriend. That want has now turned into a NEED! My life has only grown better since starting my relationship with God and I cannot wait to continue to grow with Him. My Name is Kate Sumka. I have been attending Catholic church on and off for my entire life but never felt that I had the time to devote to RCIA. For years, I was hesitant to get more information and felt I could not fit the time commitment into my busy working mom schedule. This year I decided was the year! Not only have I been able to find the time for our classes, I have felt like I have more time because of my new relationship with Christ. I look forward to our weekly meetings and am so glad I joined RCIA. Vocation Corner: Asking God for a Promise The first reading this weekend shows God giving a promise to Abraham, who at the time was named Abram. This was the promise: "Look up at the sky and count the stars, if you can. Just so shall your descendants be." God gave him a promise, that He (God) will make Abraham's descendants as numerous as the stars. That seems almost to be too big of a promise. But here we are, descendants of Abraham. Some would object but if you follow the genealogy of Matthew it was from Abraham's line that Jesus was born and if we are members of His body, then we too can claim to be his descendants. The amazing thing that this passage shows us, besides that, is this: before the hardships in life, God will often, if we listen, give to us a promise. He promises Abraham that his descendants will be as numerous as the stars then when Abraham has ONE SON, God asks him to sacrifice that son. Contradictory some would say, but it was a test, not just of Abraham's faith, but of his accepting of God's promise. He didn't arbitrarily trust God - He trusted in the promise that God made to Him. So when we go through lent or go through life or if we are trying to discern our vocation in life and we get overwhelmed by the thought of the pain or difficulty that lies ahead, stop and ask God for a promise. I think it is why so many men and women discerning religious life, know not how hard it is going to be, but God gives them, at the time they are thinking about the Priesthood or Religious Life a little bit of the joy of the life to be lived. It is a simple but profound promise of the goodness of God.

11 S, M 17, 2019 P 11 SPOTLIGHT ON: RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PK3-5TH GRADE St. Patrick s Religious Education program is multifaceted and reaches out to all the families and children in the parish and beyond. Today s focus is on the PK3 5 th grade level which helps lead our young children in learning of God s love for them, provides support, and helps to remove obstacles in the way of their faith journey. Opportunities for worship are created so that - with gratitude and humility - the children thank God for all He has given them, and praise and honor Him Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Sharing the Good News through Scripture and teaching the children to be present in the moment when God provides an encounter with Him through others, enables evangelization and an opportunity to love others as Christ loves us. Missionary discipleship grows as the children ask for graces to love Jesus more, become holy, and be a saint. They are on a path of life-long learning of the faith. Awareness of the needs of others promotes fellowship and a sense of belonging to the church family. Taking action to meet those needs in service to others (both near and far) provides concrete expressions of a living faith. For example, during Lent, students are encouraged to do chores at home to raise money to purchase cows for St. Patrick s Parish in Soroti, Uganda. Over the years, we have purchased over 40 cows for the needy families there!
