2 PAGE 2 SUNDAY, JUNE 18, 2017 Dear Friends in Christ, Corpus Christi: The Body of Christ This weekend we celebrate the great Solemnity of Corpus Christ. The Eucharist is right at the heart of our Catholic faith. Our belief goes all the way back to the Last Supper when Jesus gave his disciples the gift of himself. The Church has always had a belief that what is received in Communion is the Risen Lord himself. The Eucharist is not a mere symbol, or is it simply a sign of communion with the Lord and with one another. It is the Lord himself. It is the Body, Blood, Soul, and divinity of the Lord Jesus. We term this The Real Presence of Jesus which lows from today s gospel. Jesus says: Whoever eats my lesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my lesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. (John 6:53) While the appearances of bread and wine remain, we believe that the substance or core reality is sacramentally transformed into the Risen Lord. Through the consecration at Mass. That is why the Blessed Sacrament is always reserved in the tabernacle. The vigil lamp let s us know that Christ is present. Why did Jesus give us this great gift? Because he knew we would need nourishment for the journey. Just as God fed the Israelites in the desert with manna so that they would not perish from hunger, so our Lord gives us his very self as the spiritual nourishment that sustains us on our journey. There s an old saying that you become what you eat. When it comes to the Eucharist, we pray that that is true. We receive Jesus so that we can become more like. If we receive the Lord faithful and humbly week after week, we will slowly but surely become more like him. The mind and heart of Christ will become ours and our words and actions will become more like those of Jesus. There is a Eucharistic devotion that I would like to draw your attention to. Eucharistic adoration is a very ancient tradition that has made a great comeback in recent decades. Adoration is a contemplative prayer form that involves exposing the Blessed Sacrament in a monstrance which is placed on the altar. Eucharistic adoration involves people coming before our Eucharistic Lord and spending quiet time with him. Just as we grow in relationship with the important people in our lives by spending time with them, adoration is spending time with the Lord and quietly opening ourselves to his loving presence. We live in a busy, noisy world so we need to ind those quiet places where we can deepen our friendship with the Lord. If you have never experienced adoration, I would suggest giving it a try. At the Crane Road Chapel we have Eucharistic adoration all day and into the evening on Tuesdays. We conclude with Benediction at 8:45 p.m. which involves a blessing with the Eucharist. At the Downtown Church, we have adoration beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesdays, running all day and overnight, and concluding with Benediction on Thursday morning at 7:45 a.m. We have some pamphlets in the lobbies of both churches that have an explanation of Eucharistic adoration and it s bene its. If a person is going to grow in their friendship with God, we have to create those spaces where he can speak to us in the quiet of our hearts. Adoration is a great place for that type of experience. We thank Jesus for the great gift of the Eucharist and for the many ways he nourishes us and sustains us. May you have a blessed summer! In Christ, Msgr. Steve Knox St. Patrick Catholic School - Grow with Us! 3 SUNDAY, JUNE 18, 2017 PAGE 3 New Four Week Summer Scripture Series! Reliving the Parables of Jesus Tuesdays: July 11, July 18, July 25, August 1 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. Downtown Fr. Carse Center 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Crane Road Dempsey Hall Led by Msgr. Knox, Fr. Manno, Fr. Gonnella and Seminarian John Kladar Jesus was a master storyteller. His parables illustrate the truths of the Kingdom of God and challenge listeners to look more closely at their lives in light of the spiritual truths that are presented. We ll be reflecting on some of Jesus parables and examining how they can help each one of us grow spiritually. Tuesday, July 11 led by Fr. Manno: Parables About Growth in the Kingdom of God To grow or not to grow? We have the freedom to say yes or no to God s invitation. The parable of the sower and the seed (Mark 4:1-20) illustrates God s desire to help his people grow in faith and virtue. What prevents our spiritual growth? What spiritual practices and disciplines can help us grow in our relationship with God? We ll also look at the parable of the weeds and the wheat (Matthew 13:24-30). Tuesday, July 18 led by Fr. Gonnella: Parables About Forgiveness and Reconciliation Jesus told some powerful stories to illustrate God s forgiveness. They also challenge us to be about forgiveness and reconciliation in our lives and to become more humble. In this session we ll focus on the classic parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32). We ll also explore the challenging parable of The Unmerciful Servant (Matthew 18:21-35). Forgiving others is often difficult to do, but Jesus uses this parable to show us the way to freedom and peace. Tuesday, July 25 led by Seminarian John Kladar: Parables About Growth in Compassion for Others And who is my neighbor? Jesus responds to that question with the parable of The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). A Christ-like compassion challenges us to see all people as our neighbors, regardless of their racial, cultural, religious or ethnic background. The parable of The Rich Man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31) challenges us to see the presence of God in the poor and lowly, and to respond with compassion and generosity. Tuesday, August 1 led by Msgr. Steve Knox: Parables About Being Prepared: Don t Waste Your One and Only Life! We are all given a certain amount of time on earth and God expects us to use our time well. In this gathering we ll be looking at parables that challenge us to develop and share our talents and abilities (Matthew 25:14-30) and to be ready to meet the Lord when our time comes, even if that time comes unexpectedly (Matthew 25:1-13). You are welcome to attend as many sessions as your schedule allows. Registration is not required. Please invite others to join you! No experience in bible study is required to participate, only a desire to learn and grow. We ll have copies of the scriptures available at each session. If you have any questions, please contact Jenny at or jhansen@stpatrickparish.org.
