2 P 2 S, F 18, 2018 Dear Friends in Christ, Temptations! The gospel on the irst Sunday of Lent has Jesus in the desert being tempted by Satan. We might wonder what that has to do with our lives. The fundamental temptation of the evil one is to pull Jesus away from his mission of proclaiming the gospel message. Jesus withstands these temptations and emerges from the desert empowered by the love of the Father to proclaim the truths of the Kingdom of God. As we heard in the gospel, the season of Lent calls us to repentance and a deeper internalization of the gospel message. The word repentance means to turn away from anything that is sinful and destructive, and to turn back toward the grace and light of God. Every person experiences temptations in life. Spiritual writer Thomas Merton put it very well when he said that forbidden fruit tastes sweet while you are eating it, but it leaves a bitter aftertaste. When we succumb to a sinful desire or temptation, it initially brings some satisfaction, but the aftermath is guilt and shame. All of this goes back to the garden of Eden with Adam and Eve and their fall from grace. We all experience the impact of this original sin. That s why we need a season like Lent. We refocus on what nourishes our souls and keeps us spiritually in shape to live the Christian life. The key is the Eucharist. The Mass and the Eucharist keep us centered in Christ and spiritually nourished to face the temptations of life. We will never be perfect, but the more we allow the Lord to be the Lord of our lives, the more we will be strengthened to live our faith in a life giving way. Our daily prayer, acts of service, fasting, and the sacrament of reconciliation also keep us close to God. Without spiritual nourishment, we are weakened and more prone to succumb to temptation, and be infected by the virus of sin. The season of Lent calls us back to these spiritual fundamentals. The evil one desires to draw us away from the light of God into the darkness of sin and sel ishness. May we be strengthened to stay close to the light and renewed in Christ during the season of Lent! Lenten Almsgiving Project Our Lenten almsgiving project will take place next weekend with the annual baby bottle project. All donations to this project go to support the life giving efforts of Corbella Clinic in Elgin. Corbella (beautiful heart in Italian) assists women experiencing crisis pregnancies and help them choose life. Being pro-life also means being there for those in crisis. Parishioners will have an opportunity to take a baby bottle with them when they leave Mass. During Lent place your spare change or any other type of donation in the bottle. We will have containers in the lobbies of both churches that will be used to collect the bottles. Over the years our parish has been very generous toward Corbella Clinic. Let s work together to assist them in their life giving ministry. In Christ, Msgr. Steve The Respect Life Commi ee will be distribu ng baby bo les a er every mass Next week for the Annual Baby Bo le Boomerang Fund raiser. We ask that each family take a bo le home and through the week fill the bo le with your spare change, cash, or checks (Payable to: Corbella Clinic) and then return to the Church in the following weeks and deposit in the bins near the entrances. The money collected through this fundraiser aids Corbella Clinic (Formerly Fox Valley Pregnancy Center) in its mission to assist individuals who are unprepared for pregnancy to calmly and confidently explore their op ons, empowering them to make healthy, life-affirming decisions through educa on and compassionate support services. Olympics & Lent Training for eternal life... t seems itting that Lent begins right in the middle of the 2018 Olympics. When watching this irst week of Olympic glory I we can get caught up in the moment with sighs of defeat when Olympians make mistakes and fall, and cheers of joy when victory is celebrated. These athletes make it look so easy to do a quad jump in ice skating or a clean run on the half pipe. Our school students go to bed dreaming of standing on the podium as the Star Spangled Banner is played and the gold medal is placed around their necks. It is easy to forget all the years, months, days, and hours spent training and practicing. All the sacri ices that were made by the athletes and their families to get them to this point of victory. What is it that makes these athletes get to this point of success in their careers? First, the goal. They have the ultimate goal of winning gold. They know where they are headed and what it will take to get there. After they know the goal they must commit to the work it will take to achieve this goal. These athletes focus, commit, and do what it takes to become the best in the world. There is not an athlete in the Olympics that just happened to get there without giving it their all, without sacri ice. How much more are we called to train and sacri ice to get to the heavenly goal. Think of how much more glorious the golden gates of heaven will be than even the gold Olympic medal! God knows this heavenly goal is not an easy one to achieve, but He gives us the tools we need and the map we need to follow to achieve eternal glory. Lent is a time of intense training. A time to let go of the things that are holding us back from eternal gold and giving our all to prepare for Christ s victory over death at Easter. Lent is a time for us to practice all those lessons that God has for us. In the next forty days our students will be growing in grace as they practice prayer, fasting, and alms giving. Our students will be taking time each week to offer extra prayer, receiving the Sacrament of Penance, and offering up extra sacri ices. Our entire school is working hard to collect money for the Hope for Haitians organization. Last week we learned more about this amazing organization and all the wonderful things they are doing to help the poorest of the poor in Haiti. We will be praying for the children in Haiti and donating to help care for these children. Stay tuned at the end of Lent for a total amount collected! Hope for Hai ans Assembly H We know that our Savior and all the Saints in heaven will be cheering as we cross the inish line of our earthly life and celebrate eternal victory in heaven. 100th Day of Kindergarten with Mrs. Michael s 100 year old kindergarteners.
