2 PAGE 2 SUNDAY, DECEMBER 3, 2017 Dear Friends in Christ, Happy Advent! This Weekend with the blessing of the Advent wreath and the lighting of the irst candle, we enter into the holy season of Advent. This is a time of special preparation of the coming of Christ. The irst week of Advent connects us to the coming of Jesus at the end of time. The scriptures exhort us to be prepared and to live with a spirit of vigilance so that when the Lord comes we will be ready to meet him. Subsequent Sundays focus us on preparing ourselves for the coming of Jesus at Christmas. This is typically a very busy time of year so it can be a challenge to maintain the spirit that the Advent season calls us to. Prayer helps us to keep that spirit of vigilance, so seek to carve out some time each day to connect to the Lord. If your schedule permits, participate in daily Mass at 7:00am at Crane Rd. or 8:30am at the downtown church. The readings and prayers that are shared and proclaimed at Advent Masses are some of our most beautiful and spiritually enriching. Sharing to help others is another Advent virtue. Let s help those in need through the Giving Tree and the many service ministries that exist in our parish. The new Loaves and Fishes Community Dinners are a great way to give back. One of the great things about our Catholic faith is its diversity and multiculturalism. God s grace shines through the Church in many ways. Over the next few weeks we will have a couple of liturgies that are very special for our Hispanic and Filipino parishioners. All are invited to participate in these liturgies. On December 12, we celebrate the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This year the Mass will take place at 5:00 p.m. at the Downtown Church followed by a festive gathering in the Fr. Carse Center. We have a beautifully restored portrait of Our Lady of Guadalupe in our Downtown Church that was blessed by Bishop Malloy back in May. On Monday, December 18, we will be having our Simbang Gabi Mass at 7:00 p.m. at the Crane Road Church followed by Filipino food and fellowship in Dempsey Hall. Everyone in the parish is invited. One of the ways to prepare our minds and hearts for the coming of Christ is to receive the sacrament of reconciliation so that we have pure minds and hearts. We will be having extra times for parishioners to receive the sacrament, so please look for a time that connects with your schedule. Sin creates blockages within us. We want to remove those so that the Lord can be born more deeply into our lives at Christmas. We have the Christmas Mass times and the confession schedule in this weekend s bulletin. Many Catholics have been baptized and have received their First Holy Communion, but have not received Confirmation. We will begin a seven week preparation program beginning on Thursday, February 1. The Classes will take place on the Crane Road Campus from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. We will meet on seven consecutive Thursdays. Those who participate will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation at the Easter Vigil on the evening of Saturday, March 31, The instructors for the sessions will be the parish priests, along with Deacon Mike Smith and Mike Alber who is preparing to become a Permanent Deacon. We will be providing an overview of Catholicism, with a special emphasis on the Sacrament of Confirmation.
