2 P 2 S, F 17, 2019 Dear Friends in Christ, Greetings from Rome! I hope all of you are doing well. I'm enjoying my sabbatical program at the Institute for Continuing Theological Education in Rome. We're located about a half mile from St. Peter's Basilica in the heart of Rome. There are 29 priests who are part of the program, most from the United States. We also have two priests from Australia, two from New Zealand, two Canadians, and one from England. In addition to the continuing education part of the program, there are also opportunities to enjoy Rome and its amazing culture. We celebrate Mass everyday so I've been praying for all of you. Please lift up a few prayers for me too! I would also ask your prayers for the whole Church as Pope Francis gathers with the presidents of the world's Catholic Bishops Conferences, and representatives of the leadership groups of men's and women's religious orders from February in Rome. The Pope has called this Summit to continue to address the issue of clergy sexual abuse which has been in the news so much. The aim of the summit is to provide clear direction and concrete steps so that when bishops return to their home countries and dioceses around the world, they will know exactly what the Church expects of them regarding the prevention of abuse, the need to provide care for victims and their families, and the obligation to make sure abuse is never covered up. The Pope has asked all the bishops who will be present to meet with victims in their dioceses so that they know firsthand the damage that is caused by abuse. The Pope has stated that the "February meeting will seek to make past sins, crimes and mistakes opportunities for eliminating the scourge of abuse not only from the body of the Church, but also from that of society." We do believe that the Lord can bring good out of evil, and we pray for that transforming grace that will bring renewal and new life. Our Rockford Diocese has been working hard for many years now on creating policies and safe environment procedures for the protection of young people. You can view them on our diocesan website at This will be a big item on the news next week, so please pray that our leaders be given wisdom and a spirit of courage in their deliberations and decision making. It is the Lord's Church so we can trust that he will inspire the renewal that we need so that we can be about the proclamation of his Gospel. Let's also pray for God's healing grace upon all victims and their families. May God's spirit of love and peace come upon all of you and upon our whole Church. May God bless you now and always! The program explores the issues of divorce, with the goal of leading participants toward ultimate forgiveness, happiness and new life.
