2 P 2 S, D 10, 2017 Dear Friends in Christ, Prepare the Way for the Lord This weekend in the gospel we encounter John the Baptist, the Advent prophet. John s mission is to prepare the way for the Messiah. Some mistakenly thought that John might be the Messiah. He was quick to dismiss that notion and point to Jesus as the true Messiah. We hear in today s gospel that John has come to proclaim a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. He has come to prepare the way for Jesus. The word repentance can give us some insight into John the Baptist s role. It means to make an about face, to turn and go in the other direction. What do we need to turn away from? John the Baptist names it as sin or darkness. Sin has a way of damaging or even destroying our lives. John challenged people to turn away from darkness and to stay close to the light which is God. Sometimes sin and darkness can be very attractive and lead us down a wrong path. We have been hearing a great deal about that on the news recently as many prominent national igures have fallen from grace. We are blessed as Catholics to have a sacrament in our tradition that can help us stay close to the light. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) helps us to be accountable before God. Because of our human nature, we all have times when we turn away from God and turn toward sin and darkness. God s forgiveness and grace is more powerful than our sins. We simply need to turn in humility toward the mercy of God and receive his pardon. The grace we receive in the sacrament of reconciliation not only forgives our sins but it strengthens us in virtue. On the next page of the bulletin I list our Advent confession schedule. A great way to prepare for the birth of our Saviour is to have our hearts cleansed from any sins so that we can receive him more deeply into our lives. Don t worry if you have been away from this sacrament for a long time. The priests will compassionately receive you and help you experience the love and mercy of God. God wants us to know peace and freedom. Mass Schedules for the 4 th Sunday of Advent and the Solemnity of Christmas This is an unusual year because Christmas falls on Monday, December 25.
