2 PASTOR'S CORNER CALLED BY NAME All the parishes ofthe Archdiocese of Philadelphia are participating in CALLED BY NAME, a program of vocations awareness that begins this weekend. This program offers an opportunity for us to pray for priestly vocations; to recognize gifts and potential for leadership and service in members of our parish; and finally, to call forth and encourage these members to share their gifts in priesthood. Perhaps, you know a man (16 years of age or older) who would, in your opinion, have the qualities to become a priest. Please recommend this person by filling out the response card found in the pews. Next weekend, place the completed card into the collection basket. Everyone is welcome to the annual Mass of Remembrance this Monday, November 2, All Souls Day, at 7:00 PM. We will prayerfully remember our deceased loved ones, especially those who have been buried from our parish this past year, and ask the God of consolation to strengthen us in their absence. Fast approaching is our parish 40 Hours Devotion - Sunday through Tuesday, November We will celebrate Evening Prayer and Benediction each evening at 7:00 PM. This year we are blessed to have as our preacher, Father Anthony Di Guglielmo, a native son of our parish, as well as the son of parishioners Barbara and Anthony Di Guglielmo. Father Di Guglielmo is the Vice Chancellor as well as the Assistant to the Vicar for Clergy at the Archdiocese. We have a wonderful seminary in our archdiocese that is outstanding in its education and formation of priests, deacons, religious and lay faithful. But St. Charles Seminary is in real need of financial aid to continue its excellent programs. Please be as generous as you can to this year's Appeal for St. Charles Borromeo Seminary. I thank you for your prayers and support of the Archdiocese's greatest treasure. 40 HOURS Ii I \ c:::::: > SUNDA Y - TUESDA Y - NOVEMBER 8-10 ADORATION ALL DA Y IN CHURCH FOLLOWING THE 8:30 AM MASS EVENING PRAYER AND BENEDICTION AT 7:00 PM EACHEVENING Ii4 THER ANTHONY DI GUGLIELMO PREACHING

4 FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK Many Americans have been moved by a visit to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery outside of Washington, D.C. This site contains the bodies of unidentified American servicemen killed in battle. A military guard stands at the Tomb in tribute to all who have died for our country. Today we Catholics give recognition to those who lived and died for their faith - the saints. We commemorate the saints, especially those who are "unknown," whose names are not remembered on the calendar of the Church year. There is a saying that Christians stand on the shoulders of the saints. The saints help us reach God. We both honor their heritage and pay lasting tribute to them when we try to follow the Lord Jesus with complete dedication, battling bravely against the evil around us. The saints are central to Catholic spirituality. We name our children after them, ask their intercession for our special needs, and sometimes wear their medals around our necks. Their struggles and sacrifices inspire and encourage us. Unfortunately, though, we tend to view saints as a separate species from ourselves. We forget that they were as human as we are. What really set them apart was that they loved God with a passion that enabled them to pour out their lives in service to others. Each of us is called to be a saint by virtue of our baptism. St. Teresa of Avila wrote: "God does not look so much at the greatness of our works as the love with which they are done." Our Lord calls few of us to lives of heroic sacrifice. But He calls all of us to lives of unselfish love. MAJOR PAUL ALLEN LT. AMY CALLAHAN, USN, MD LT. JAMES P. CALLAHAN, USN LT. JOHN R. 6 Q. What is the difference between soul and spirit? Which one moves on to the after life and when? Revelation says we are sleeping in death till the Second Coming. Then a one thousand year period begins. A. (CCC#363) In Sacred Scripture the term "soul" often refers to human life or the entire human person. But "soul" also refers to the innermost aspect of man, that which is of greatest value in him, that by which he is most especially in God's image: "soul" Signifies the spiritual principle in man. The human body shares in the dignity of "the image of God": it is a human body precisely because it is animated by a spiritual soul, and it is the whole human person that is intended to become, in the body of Christ, a temple of the Spirit. Man, though made of body and soul, is a unity. For this reason, man may not despise his bodily life. Rather he is obliged to regard his body as good and to hold it in honor since God has created it and will raise it up on the last day. The Church teaches that every spiritual soul is created immediately by God-it is not "produced" by the parents-and also, that it is immortal: it does not perish when it separates from the body at death, and it will be reunited with the body at the final Resurrection. Sometimes the soul is distinguished from the spirit: St. Paul for instance prays that God may sanctify His people "wholly," with "spirit and soul and body" kept sound and blameless at the lord's coming. The church teaches that this distinction does not introduce a duality into the soul. "Spirit signifies that from creation man is ordered to a supernatural end and that this soul can gratuitously be raised beyond all it deserves to communion with God." As to when the soul leaves the body, the CCCsays this: "Each man receives his eternal retribution in his immortal soul at the very moment of his death, in a particular judgment that refers his life to Christ: either entrance into the blessedness of heaven-through a purification or immediately,-or immediate and everlasting damnation." I will deal next week more fully with the question of when the soul leaves the body as well as with the quote from Revelation about the thousand years." The belief in it is called "Millenialism." It is not a belief of the Catholic Church. PEOPLE WITH SSA TELL THEIR STORIES On November 3, at 7:00 PM, in the Parish Center (Library), "Desire of the Everlasting Hills" will be shown. It gives us three intimate and candid portraits of Catholics trying to navigate the waters of self-understanding, faith, and homosexuality. There is no preaching in this video. Three people simply tell their stories. Everyone is welcome. The video is one hour. There will be time for questions afterward. Hopefully, this will begin to fulfill in a small way Pope Francis' desire for the church to be more welcoming. HC0245
