6 Holy Time Warp In our second reading from Hebrews, we see that when Jesus allowed himself to be crucified he was actually being a priest, offering himself for the sins of the world. After giving his life for us, he takes his place as God's equal. He is now the eternal Priest, so all clergy since the time of Jesus are visible signs of that priesthood. When we celebrate the Eucharist, Jesus' sacrifice is there. We are present at his death and resurrection, without needing a flux capacitor or a time warp. His sacrifice is an eternal one, redeeming all past and future sins. So if you have come back to church after being absent for years, God has already offered you forgiveness. The Eucharist also reminds us that Jesus is present in glory, with us always, sharing his priesthood with all the baptized. We can show God's mercy by forgiving each other. Since Jesus lives in us, we offer our lives as sacrifice for sins. Does that mean we are supposed to seek ways to suffer? No, it means the suffering we cannot avoid can become our offering to God, a way to take up our cross as Jesus did, and a way to experience God's power in our weakness. At the Eucharist, we pray with the priest, "that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God..." All the sacrifices we make, from accepting serious illness, to giving up something for Lent, are ways we take part in the priesthood of Christ. --Tom Schmidt, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Thanks One act of thanksgiving when things go wrong with us is worth one thousand thank-yous when things are agreeable to our inclination. --St. John of Ávila Treasures from our Tradition November is a month of remembrance for the dead, and cemeteries have long been a focus for prayer. Our tradition holds great respect for bodily remains, since the body was created and redeemed by God, was once the "dwelling place of the Holy Spirit," and has a destiny of life with God in glory. The funeral practices of the early church contrasted greatly with those of the pagans, who had a great dread of the dead body. The ancient Christian funeral liturgy ended with the relatives and friends giving a final kiss to the body. It expressed affection and showed their faith that the grave would not be the last word. This kiss horrified pagans, who thought that any contact with the dead was degrading. Every year on their loved one's "birthday to life," the Christians would return to the place of their burial to mark their profound communion with those whose lives were hidden in Christ. Typically, they buried the dead with their faces turned toward the east, symbolizing the rising of the Sun of Justice, Christ, at the end of days. They were attracted to the catacombs or burial grounds just as we are today. They would often celebrate the Eucharist at the tomb. Before long, as soon as Christians were allowed to build places for worship, they relocated cemeteries from beyond the city walls to surround the church. This was not so much because the church made the ground holy, but because the bodies of the saints hallowed the ground on which the church was built, a subtle but beautiful difference. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. The Glorious Bible It is one of the glories of the Bible that it can embrace many meanings in a single passage. --St. Thomas Aquinas Question of the Week How does not knowing when the end will come change the way I live my life? 7 Volunteer Spotlight Graciela Barrera has been a volunteer at St. Hugh for over ten years. She has volunteered at St. Hugh in multiple roles. Graciela can be found in the quiet empty church cleaning, and making our worship space neat and tidy. Most notably Graciela has been a catechist for several different Religious Education classes over the years. She has taught 5th grade, 6th grade, preschool/kindergarten, and currently is in First Grade. Graciela can often be found after Mass praying in church and sharing her faith with fellow parishioners. Graciela has helped at most every parish event. She helped sell tickets and bakery at Halfway to Hugh, she has volunteered for Picnics, Christmas Bazaars, Spring Luncheons, and many other Parish Events. Graciela is always willing to throw in a helping hand. Thank you so much Graciela for being an ever present helping hand at St. Hugh. Saint Hugh of Grenoble Pray for us. Pope Francis Tweets: The first step to knowing Jesus Christ is to recognize our own poverty and our need to be saved. 11/13/18 Pope Gift tag ornaments with names and wishes for presents are available starting in baskets under the Holy Family (near the Baptismal Font). Please only take a tag for which you can fulfill the wish. The tags represent children from our community schools whose families are struggling this holiday season. Most will not receive presents, as the family does not have the means to purchase a gift. All presents need to be returned to the giving tree no later than Sunday, December 9. Thank you so much for your generosity on behalf of the children and families! Contact Chris Alfred at or sthughlyons@sbcglobal.net All donations to Saint Hugh are tax deductible. (MARK 13:26) We will all have that day when we are standing before God and our life is played out like a movie. When this happens and God asks each of us, What have you done with the gifts that I have given you? How will you respond? Vincentian Reflection The Gospel predicts end times; our challenge though is to live faithfully now. When we live in conformity to the Word, hearing Jesus words and living them out, the future holds no fear for us. As you place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul poor box, know that you are hearing the words of Jesus and living them out. Second Collection The Second Collection is for the Needs of St. Hugh Parish. This includes energy bills and repairs that need to be done.
