2 March 4, 2018 Page Two My Dear Parishioners, From the Pastor During these weeks of Lenten preparation for Easter, each of us has ample cause to reflect and to scrutinize those challenges and obstacles in our lives which tend to handicap our spiritual development. As a part of their preparation for receiving the Sacraments at Easter, the Elect in our RCIA process participate in the Scrutinies, special rites celebrated on the middle three Sundays of Lent at liturgies where the Elect are present. The Scrutinies are ancient rites which are profoundly rooted in our human experience. St. Ambrose and St. Augustine celebrated them in the fourth and fifth centuries to mark the spiritual progress of the catechumens. They remind us of the need to examine our spiritual readiness to accept God s grace so that we can grow as His faithful disciples. A time for us to ask, Who are we as Christians and how are we doing at living the Gospel message? Are we truly people of Gospel values? Since all of us are called to continual conversion throughout our lives, we join with the Elect during Lent to discover what part God plays in our picture. We are being asked to consider significant moments in our lives, traumatic or otherwise, not as accidents or coincidences, but rather as God intervening in our lives when we least expect it. Change can only come because of the catalyst or a significant moment. We all really need healing and the strength that can come from the support of our sisters and brothers. Siempre Adelante!
