LUKE River Forest, IL FROM THE PASTOR Empty Seats Oh, how the church would resound with God s praises if the crowds of Easter Sunday were with us every week. Alas, the numbers we had worshipping next to us last weekend are now a thing of the past. The beautifully decorated church remains, however, with the sweet fragrance of Easter flowers and incense and a spring festival of color! Hopefully the message preached on Easter of new life and salvation with its most positive and optimistic spin will invite people home again and again to worship and praise their Risen Lord, the one true, living God. On April 17, Easter Monday of the week past, the Church of Chicago remembered and marked the 2 nd anniversary of the death of Francis Cardinal George, the 8 th Archbishop of Chicago. It is hard to believe he is gone that long. Similarly, in our parish, there can be a sense of amazement of how time passes so quickly and the people we miss. As I look out at the body of the church at Mass, I can remember who once sat in particular areas of the various pews. Even in the short time I ve been here (going on three years), the various connections made with faithful parishioners who are no longer with us remind me to pray for them as I see their empty seats. I think of the catechist devoted to the religious education of our young people, the elderly, the usher, the grandmother or grandfather, the numerous school parents called home by God too soon in their young lives suddenly, or through illness or tragedy. During this 50-day celebration of Easter, the Church gives us ample opportunity to reflect on what the resurrection of Christ means to us personally. Do we believe in the power of the Lord s rising from the dead? How strong is our faith in this great saving Paschal mystery? How are we renewed in the virtue of Christian hope in the midst of life changes and struggles? Do we allow the Holy Spirit into our lives to assist us as our advocate and helper? It is only in joyful thanksgiving that is spiritually linked into our lives that we can most effectively live this mystery of our faith. What we often forget is that the Mass, the Eucharistic celebration, is the quintessential way for us to pray with thankful hearts. Let us continue to remember and pray for our young people, especially our 2 nd graders, who prepare for their first encounter with the Eucharistic Lord on April 29, the first of the thousands of possible opportunities available to them throughout their lives. God bless you Alleluia, Alleluia! ~Fr. Szmyd

3 This Second Sunday of Easter has also been known as Divine Mercy Sunday since Pope Saint John Paul II proclaimed it worthy of universal devotion in Parishes throughout the world, including St. Luke, will join together in prayer and adoration on this day seeking God s mercy for ourselves and for our nation. Origins of the Feast Day Mankind s need for the message of Divine Mercy took on dire urgency in the 20 th century, when civilization began to experience an eclipse of the sense of God and, therefore, to lose the understanding of the sanctity and inherent dignity of human life. In the 1930s, Jesus chose a humble Polish nun, St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, to receive private revelations concerning Divine Mercy that were recorded in her diary. This was precisely the time when those ideologies of evil, Nazism, and communism, were taking shape, wrote Pope John Paul II in his 2005 book Memory and Identity. Sister Faustina became the herald of the one message capable of off-setting the evil of those ideologies, that fact that God is mercy. St. Faustina s diary records 14 occasions when Jesus requested that a Feast of Mercy (Divine Mercy Sunday) be observed. On one occasion, for example, the diary records the following message: My daughter, tell the whole world about My inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the Fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy. (Diary, No. 699) On May 5, 2000, five days after the canonization of St. Faustina, the Vatican decreed that the Second Sunday of Easter would henceforth be known as Divine Mercy Sunday. The Image Jesus appeared to St. Faustina in a vision, with his right hand raised in a blessing and his left touching his garment above his heart. Red and white rays emanate from his heart, symbolizing the blood and water that was poured out for our salvation and our sanctification. The Lord requested that Jesus, I trust in You be inscribed under his image. Jesus asked that his image be painted and venerated throughout the world: By means of this image I will grant many graces to souls. (Diary, No. 742) The Chaplet of Divine Mercy The Chaplet was also given to St. Faustina with this promise: Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death. Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My infinite mercy. (Diary, No. 687) Any rosary can be used for the Chaplet. Instructions for its recitation are available at the U.S. Bishops Conference website at This article was taken from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops website at prayers/divine-mercy-sunday.cfm. This time of prayer will include Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, recitation of the Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet, and Benediction. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will also be available. Everyone is invited to join in this special time of prayer and devotion. APRIL 23, 2017 Second Sunday of Easter 3

5 One of the many highlights of the Easter Vigil Mass is the lighting of the new Paschal Candle, which was captured from high above this year. The flame, representing the Light of Christ, is carried into church where the congregation lights their own individual candles from the original flame. The candle will be lit during liturgies throughout the Easter Season. Then it is placed next to the baptistery for the remainder of the year and lit for baptisms and funerals, signifying Christ s continued presence with us from birth to the grave. At next weekend s Masses, we re planning to make it easy for all of our parishioners who haven t yet registered to make it official. Why register? Registration is the official way we join a parish community. Many people think that because they attend church they automatically belong. But taking this next step is the way we show our commitment to our community, a way to be included in the religious, social, and ministerial activities of our parish of your parish. Registering in the parish is a statement of faith and confidence in the life and work of our parish. As a parish member, we are all here to help each other on our spiritual journey; we don t want to do this alone. Registration lets us know what sacraments you or your children may need and what gifts you might have to offer through our many ministries. As much as you need us, we need you, too. Are you already registered at St. Luke? One way to know is if you receive regular communications from us, such as offertory envelopes, newsletters, or s. If you do not receive at least one of these, then perhaps you are not registered here. If you re not registered, please pick up a registration packet after Mass next weekend. And fill it out and return it to the rectory or place it in the following week s collection basket. You will be glad you did! We bid farewell this past week to Glenn Wagner, who s been our business manager for the parish and school over the past 10 years, as he packed up for his move to Arizona. Glenn has served in so many functions beyond accounting for the weekly collections and paying the bills: as liaison to the Parish Finance Council, tech advisor on IT and other equipment, and overseer on the construction and maintenance work made possible through the 125 th Anniversary Capital Campaign. Whether it was helping a school family work out tuition payments or a parishioner to sign up for automatic contributions on GiveCentral, Glenn had the answers we needed. We will miss you, Glenn! Many thanks to all who made a special gift to St. Luke s Easter Collection. To date we ve received $71,309 towards our budgeted goal of $80,000. We realize that quite a few people were out of town for the holiday. Your Easter donation is still needed. Please send it to the rectory or place it in the collection basket next weekend. Thanks for your support! APRIL 23, 2017 Second Sunday of Easter 5

LUKE River Forest, IL LPi The Prime Timers thoroughly enjoyed their outing to Misericordia-Heart of Mercy Village on Chicago s far north side on April 11. Our members have visited here several times for the Christmas Brunch in Misericordia s restaurant and gift shop. But this trip was an opportunity to tour the rest of the 31-acre campus that includes housing for 600 children and adults with developmental disabilities as well as classrooms, medical and vocational therapy and recreational facilities. It also was a special treat to meet Sr. Rosemary Connelly (pictured in red blazer), a charismatic Sister of Mercy who has been key to Misericordia s incredible growth for almost 40 years. We now have a greater appreciation of the work they do at Misericordia, which everyone can support by donating to the Candy Day volunteers who will be on many street corners this coming Friday and Saturday. This week, the Prime Timers will play Bridge on Monday in the Hospitality House from noon to 2:30. New members are always welcome, but they should have a basic knowledge of the game. It is a good opportunity to brush up on old skills. Pictures from this event and others can also be found on our Facebook page at

7 The Amen Stitching Group will meet this Friday, April 28, from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm in the Hospitality House. All those interested in needlework of any kind are welcome to come for a fun afternoon. Bishop George J. Rassas will come to St. Luke on Tuesday, May 2, at 7:00 pm, to confer the Sacrament of Confirmation on the 8 th graders of our parish. It s been several years since Bishop Rassas was here for Confirmation, so we look forward to his visit and ask all parishioners to pray for our Confirmandi and their sponsors and parents. If you missed the Wild Goose Encounter on April 1 or you want to continue on in the series there will be another gathering at St. Luke on Thursday, May 4. The Wild Goose is an Irish image for the Holy Spirit and also the title of a 14-part program that explores different experiences of the Holy Spirit and how you can find God s love and transforming power in your own life. Part I God s Love Poured Out will be shown at 7:00 pm in Waldron Hall followed by Part II The Breath of God. Both parts will be followed by small group discussion. Questions?
