LUKE River Forest, IL FROM THE PASTOR This week our Church celebrates two days that are the crowning glory of how all things come together in Christ for those who believe in Him: how some are recognized for living their lives in such extraordinary ways that they become models of faith for us, and, secondly, the special remembrance guided entirely by the virtue of Christian hope as we pray for beloved family members and friends who have died. This Tuesday, All Saints Day, is a special Holy Day of Obligation in which we celebrate those who are examples to us by how they lived and how they continue to intercede on our behalf whether it is our patron, St. Luke, or any of the other saints. The Commemoration of All Souls the very next day on Wednesday features our usual daily Mass schedule with the traditional Mass of Remembrance in the evening at 7:30 pm. ALL ARE INVITED to pray with us. I challenge you to reflect on the meaning of these solemn feasts in order to see how these two experiences of worship are connected. Of course, each and every time we gather in prayer for Mass as a people of faith, we are united in thankful praise of the living God. Throughout the month of November, we have the opportunity to pray in gratitude for the blessing of having had others in our lives, those who have passed away, who are in our memories, whom we mourn and those whose loss we still feel, and how we continue to cherish them. We gather in solidarity because of losses that unite us all as people of faith. The message of the Gospel preached at the funerals of our loved ones is first and foremost the message of the Risen Lord, certainly one of tremendous peace and consolation. It may not immediately heal the wounds of grief in our hearts, but given time and reflection upon God s holy Word we will eventually discover how the Lord continues to be at our side, ever present to us at such times. The reality for us as Catholic Christians is that every time we gather as a people of faith for the celebration of the Eucharist we are reminded of Jesus s journey through the sorrows and suffering of the cross to new life and the joys of the resurrection and of our call to be saints. This is our primary calling, and our best preparation for being united again with the Lord is the day-to-day attentiveness to God and to living the sacramental life, and being close to the Lord in the sacraments, especially the Sacrament of His mercy and the Eucharist. Let us pray for each other, that in doing small things with great love, as encouraged by our most recently canonized saint, St. Teresa of Calcutta, we also can be on the path to be numbered among all the saints!

3 We remember all our faithful departed, especially those parishioners buried from St. Luke this past year: Marietta J. Adduci Joan Bell Herbert P. Carlson Eugene Casasola Joan M. White This Wednesday, November 2, is All Souls Day, a special time to remember our departed loved ones in prayer. In addition to the two morning Masses at 6:30 and 8:00 am, St. Luke will have a Mass at 7:30 pm to remember all those parishioners who have died during the past 12 months. The families and friends of these recently deceased parishioners are specially invited to join in this Memorial Mass. Everyone is cordially invited to attend. Throughout the month of November, we offer our prayers for all the faithful departed, that they may be quickly brought into the fullness of eternal life with God in heaven. Everyone is invited to write the names of relatives and friends who have died since last November in our Book of the Deceased, which will be kept in church all month. May this book be a visual reminder to keep all our departed loved ones in our prayers. Lord Jesus, you welcome into your kingdom all those who do your Father s will and say to them, Come to me, all you who labor and are overburdened, and I will give you rest. We pray for our loved ones, family and friends, who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. (Pause here to mention those you wish to remember.) Into your hands, O Lord, we humbly entrust them. In this life you embraced them with your tender love; deliver them now from every evil and bid them enter eternal rest. Father, welcome them into paradise where there will be no sorrow, no weeping nor pain, but the fullness of peace and joy with your Son and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen. May these souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. OCTOBER 30, 2016 Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time 3

4 This Tuesday, November 1, is All Saints Day, a Holy Day of Obligation. We will have Masses at 6:30, 8:00, and 9:15 am (with our school children) and 7:00 pm. 7 ABOUT: The music ministry is comprised of members of the parish community who offer their time and talent to lead our congregations in sung prayer at the masses throughout the year. Members of this ministry are bonded by their common interests and form a community within the community. WHAT WE DO: Our choirs and cantors enhance the weekly liturgies by using their musical talents to support the community s sung prayer. REQUIREMENTS: Music ministers need to have a commitment to the importance of the liturgy and its music, a pleasant singing voice, and a willingness to devote the needed time and effort to preparing the music of the seasons. TIME COMMITMENT: Our two adult choirs rehearse weekly and sing for one Sunday Mass each week between September and the end of May. They also sing at Masses for Christmas and the Triduum. Cantors rehearse approximately once a month and minister on weekends as their schedules permit. The Resurrection choir ministers at funeral Masses and rehearses a half hour before each funeral. INTERESTED? If you are interested in joining any aspect of the music ministry, please contact the Music Director, Arlene Michna, at or by at Amichna@stlukeparish.org. When I was asked about the music ministry 25 years ago, my first reaction was no thank you! I was working full-time, had a 3-year-old and a newborn at home, and a husband with a very demanding work schedule. But singing was something that I had always enjoyed, and my husband Doug encouraged me to give it a try. Today I can honestly say it has been one of the best things I have ever done for myself and my family. Whether it is a funeral, an ordinary Sunday morning Mass or Christmas, being able to contribute to the service in this profound way adds so much to my liturgy experience. ~Kathy Kurtenbach All high school teens are invited to help distribute food to needy families via a mobile food pantry from Our Lady of the Angels Mission on Chicago s West Side next Saturday, November 5, from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. This is an outdoor event, so dress appropriate for the weather, rain or shine. Everyone must sign up in advance so we can coordinate carpooling and chaperones! To register for this event, contact Fr. Steve at sbauer@stlukeparish.org or The next monthly Youth Mass will be on Sunday, November 20, at 5:00 pm, with dinner and a program following Mass. Spread the word! The length of time that current members of our parish choirs have served ranges from just a few months to 40 years for some of our singers! At this time, we have only eight music ministers serving as cantors. Between them, they ensure that we have music leadership at our five weekend Masses, extra holiday and holy day liturgies, funeral Masses, and occasionally weddings. Through the years, our choirs, (both adult and children s choirs) sing in a variety of languages, including: English, Spanish, Latin, Greek, Italian, Polish, German, Swahili, and Zulu. Most of these languages are not spoken by the choir members but are learned phonetically and represent just part of the wide variety of cultures reflected in the music of the church. While some of our choir members have had musical training in the past, many have never had a voice lesson or even read music. They all receive on-thejob-training during rehearsals and learn not just the music for the liturgies but how to develop their voices as well. Members of our music ensembles sing together, pray together, celebrate together, and support one another in time of need. Through the time we spend in our ministry, we truly become a close-knit family. OCTOBER 30, 2016 Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time 7

8 Do you have a passion for helping others and want to give back to your community? Housing Forward is looking for dedicated individuals who will volunteer their time in our shelters. Housing Forward (formerly known as PADS) has been fortunate to be able to help those in our community for the past 24 years, and one of the most important assets we have is the wealth of talented and caring volunteers that help us achieve our mission. Our volunteers annually give thousands of hours of their time and resources. They exemplify kindness, compassion and treat everyone with dignity and respect, whether or not they have a home. They truly touch the lives of those who stay at the shelter and in turn, often the lives of volunteers are also changed. This season, the greatest needs are volunteers for the 2 nd (10:30 pm to 5:00 am) and 3 rd (5:00 am to 7:30 am) shifts at various sites around the 21 west suburban communities the organization serves. 9 November 20 7:15 am to 1:15 pm [A] faith that is lived out in a serious manner gives rise to acts of authentic charity. ~Pope Francis, October 31, 2013 On Sunday, November 20, the Sunday before Thanksgiving, St. Luke Parish will rally the troops for our annual Turkey Sunday food drive that provides Thanksgiving meals for 240 families in need. These families have been identified by our sharing parish, St. Agatha, and the following ministries working on the St. Agatha campus of the former Blessed Sacrament Parish: The Learning Center, the Blessed Sacrament Food Pantry, the Golden Agers, and the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Youth Center. The area served by these ministries is one of the most economically disadvantaged areas of Chicago. Some of the families are small, especially the seniors; others are large with parents, children, and extended family members all living together. In order to have enough food for all the families, we will order in advance the following amounts of food: 200 turkeys 1,300 lbs. of potatoes 1,100 lbs. of sweet potatoes 900 cans of corn and beans 275 cans of cranberries 820 lbs. of onions 550 lbs. carrots 275 bags of Stuffing 275 boxes of Corn Bread Mix This year the 6 th grade students brought their favorite childhood books to Art class. The students learned how to draw proportioned drawings of their favorite story characters. Along with the illustrations, the students also wrote a short report on the author of the story. The wonderful art work is currently on display in Waldron Hall, where the students eat lunch, so everyone is able to enjoy the 6 th graders work! We estimate we will be spending $40 per family to buy this food, and donations are needed between now and Turkey Sunday. Checks can be made out to St. Luke Parish with a notation of Turkey Sunday on the memo line. On Turkey Sunday we also need at least 50 families to donate a 20-plus-pound frozen turkey, so we will have a total of 250 frozen turkeys. These extra birds allow us to give two turkeys to very large families. We also need people to donate other canned and non-perishable food. Please no fresh turkeys or frozen pies. Thank you in advance for your tremendous generosity. ~The St. Luke Feed the Hungry Committee OCTOBER 30, 2016 Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time 9
