WELCOME TO ST. LUKE River Forest, IL FROM THE PASTOR How Do You See the World? How Do You Think About Life? This weekend, both the prophet Jonah and St. Paul in his First Letter to the Corinthians speak about the urgency of people turning from their wayward lives and returning to the Lord. Time is running out, they tell us. However, the culmination of this urgent message is best seen in the Gospel of St. Mark in which our Lord Jesus in a virtually seamless transition from the time of his predecessor and cousin St. John now exclaims in true Baptist-like fashion: This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the Gospel. The urgency of listening to Jesus and following his message is evident when we see how quickly the four simple fishermen who would become his disciples left everything and began to follow our Lord. They teach us that there s no time like the present to follow, to be positive, to critique and challenge, to wonder, and to appreciate all of our blessings with grateful hearts, especially the gift of life that God has given us. Jesus challenge should cause us to ponder and reflect on what God thinks of us, our nation, our world where we ve been and where we re headed! We should ask the questions: How are we trying to be a positive leaven in the world to foster what is good, upright, and respectful of all human beings? How do we challenge and invite others to join us in faithful discipleship, which always includes both a personal response and also participation within a community of faith? How are we critical when we need to be, and how do we invite others to consider what really matters in a world in which many have not yet had a meaningful, personal encounter with Christ? How do we live with grateful hearts because we value and cherish what our faith means to us? As the Church encourages us this Monday to observe a Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children, our early morning Masses will be offered with Prayers for Giving Thanks for the Gift of Human Life. Please join us but also consider being with us Monday evening at 7:00 pm for a special Holy Hour for Life, to pray in solidarity for this intention. We are a wonderful parish that blesses and acknowledges, supports and educates, and protects the beautiful children our families raise and educate. It s time to pray so all are given the chance at life that has been given to us! May God bless and protect your life! ~Fr. Szmyd
3 W hen battered by life s storms, or immersed in a dense fog of suffering and uncertainty, we may feel alone and unequipped to handle the circumstances. Yet with words that echo through thousands of years into the corners of our hearts, the Lord says to us, Do not fear: I am with you (Isaiah 41:10). He speaks these words not as one who merely observes our pain, but as one who experienced immense suffering. And the very wounds that bear witness to his suffering indicate the essence of our identity and worth: we are loved by God. Reflecting on the healed wounds of the Risen Christ, we see that even our most difficult trials can be the place where God manifests his victory. He makes all things beautiful. He makes all things new. He is always with us. Jesus promised this BE NOT Afraid when he gave the disciples the same mission he gives to each of us: Go. Go be my hands and feet to a world enslaved by fear. Go to the woman who is unexpectedly pregnant and fears the future. Go to your friend who fears reprisal at work because he takes a stand for the protection of human life. Go to your aging parent in failing health who fears being a burden. And go to others, too, for their support. We don t need to have everything figured out. We can simply follow the guidance of Our Blessed Mother, the first disciple: Do whatever he tells you (John 2:5). Walk with each other. Do not be afraid to embrace God s gift of life. Whatever storms or trials we face, we are not alone. He is with us. Always, until the end of the age. (Matthew 28:20). 4 Our monthly Youth Mass will be today (Sunday) at 5:00 pm in church. All teens and their friends, young adults, families, and anyone looking for a friendly and engaging experience of Sunday Mass are invited. Right after Mass, high school and junior high youths are invited to stay for supper in Waldron Hall and a program of games and activities. A reminder that our school administration is calling all parents of current students to a mandatory meeting this week to update them on the vision for Saint Luke: Now and Future. The meeting will be presented twice this Tuesday evening, January 23, at 7:00 pm, and Wednesday morning, January 24, at 8:15 am to give all parents an opportunity to hear about plans for the future sustainability of the school, ongoing efforts to increase our student and teacher achievement, and our strategic and visionary objectives to continue advancing St. Luke s Catholic mission and legacy of academic rigor into the 2020s. The strategic plan can be viewed on the school s website at For any questions, send an to Principal Timothy Wesley at twesley@stlukeparish.org. This Monday, January 22, is the 45 th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision by the U.S. Supreme Court that legalized abortion-on-demand in our country. Nevertheless, the Catholic Church continues to proclaim the dignity and sanctity of all human life from the moment of conception on. The U.S. Bishops have declared January 22 to be a Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children, and so around this time of year, there are prayer vigils and marches for life at both the national and local levels. Here in Illinois, Governor Rauner s recent expansion of abortion funding underscores the need for increased prayer, which Cardinal Cupich has called upon Catholics to do. Responding to his request, St. Luke will celebrate both of our morning Masses with prayers for the Mass For Giving Thanks to God for the Gift of Human Life. We also will host a Holy Hour for Life on Monday at 7:00 pm in the church. All are welcome to pray for a greater respect for all human life from conception to natural death, praying to build up a culture that truly embraces the Gospel of Life. Please join us in the morning and/or evening in praying for greater respect and protection for human life and an end to abortion throughout the world in our time. All liturgical ministers are asked to update their information in the online scheduling system this week! Please log into the Ministry Scheduler Pro and check your Mass preferences and can t serve dates for the period of March 1 through May 31. While you are in the system, please check and update your address and phone number, if either has changed recently. Even the weakest and most vulnerable, the sick, the old, the unborn, and the poor, are masterpieces of God s creation, made in his own image, destined to live forever, and deserving of the utmost reverence and respect. ~Pope Francis, 28 July WELCOME TO ST. 6 New this year is the inauguration of the Heart of St. Luke Parish School Award, which was created to honor a member of our community who has contributed to the school s mission of nurturing the spirit, engaging the intellect, and building vibrant communities rooted in faith, excellence, service, responsibility, and love. We asked the inaugural recipient of this special recognition, Kitti McSorley, to reflect on the many years she has given her heart to our school: I like to say that I have been at St. Luke School longer than anyone on the faculty - but that s only if you add in the years that I spent here as a child. Then you have it: a total of 27 years, including eight as a student and 19 as a teacher! Growing up during the1960s with nine brothers and sisters, my brother Marty would often say that there were only two blocks of freedom that separated us from our parents and the Dominican sisters who had been given supreme authority over our lives and our education! I didn t know at the time how much those first eight years with the Dominican Sisters would shape my life. After graduating from St. Luke School, Trinity High School, and Rosary College, I began teaching Art at St. Giles School for a year. Then I was transferred with my family to the Netherlands, where I taught preschool for five years. Back in the States, I felt a calling to teach in the innercity at our twinning parish school at Blessed Sacrament. Second Grade is where I spent my days, loving my involvement and creating strong ties between both schools. Then in 1999, I returned to St. Luke School this time as a second grade teacher. In the past few years I have had the honor and responsibility of helping develop faith with our St. Luke students. Together with the other members of my cherished faculty, we share a vision of looking for opportunities to encounter Christ each day in life-giving ways with our students. There is a steadfast heartbeat that runs through the hallowed halls of St. Luke School. It is that of the teachers with whom I work side-by-side, and the children of our beloved families who come bounding through our school doors eager to begin their St. Luke day just as I did so many years ago! Lucky, blessed me! Let s Show our Gratitude for our Honorees! There are only two more weeks to recognize Kitti and our Gala honorees, Andy and Katie Rauh, in a special way by placing an advertisement in the Dinner Dance Program Book. Your well wishes will be seen by more than 300 attendees and supporters, while you support St. Luke School at the same time! Have a business that could use more exposure in our St. Luke community? Contact Mary Ann O Connell at mdegroff@att.net to place an ad that will boost your business before the January 31 deadline. Or extend your personal wishes to the Rauhs and/or Kitti with a congratulatory ad in the Dinner Dance program book. Contact Sheila Price for details on these tribute ads at sprice@stlukeparish.org or by January 31. 8 Many of our parish families recently received a letter from Cardinal Blase Cupich requesting everyone s participation in making a pledge to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA). The ACA supports many parish and archdiocesan ministries and services, and we ask that every household respond as generously as possible. This year s theme is Come, Follow Me, which is our Lord s own words in today s Gospel. We have all received God s love. By financially supporting the ministries and services funded by the ACA, we help to extend God s love to many, many others. Please carefully review the mailing from Cardinal Cupich to understand how many vital ministries and services are made possible by your gift to the Appeal, including ones that directly support the work of our parish. Then consider what you can give. If our parish reaches its goal of $59,000 in paid pledges, 100% of any funds over and above that will be returned to us for use in our own parish. Please note, too, that you may spread out your contributions in fulfillment of your pledge over the entire year. Even though the form that you have shows six payments, the Archdiocese will send out monthly statements, and you will have through December 2018 to fulfill your pledge. Thank you for your generous support! Parents, educators, and community members are invited to attend a free film screening of the IndieFlix film Angst, an inspirational and educational movie that discusses anxiety and the challenges it brings to our children and teens.
