3 The problem of violence and its tragic impact on so many lives in the Chicago area is of great concern to all. The Archdiocese and Cardinal Cupich have been outspoken advocates for the end to violence in our metropolis. These efforts have not been lost on our Church s leaders. Pope Francis wrote in a letter to Cardinal Cupich in April 2017: Please convey to the people of Chicago that they have been on my mind and in my prayers. I know that many families have lost loved ones to violence. I am close to them, I share in their grief, and pray that they may experience healing and reconciliation through God s grace. I assure you of my support for the commitment you and many other local leaders are making to promote nonviolence as a way of life and a path to peace in Chicago. Sadly, as you have told me, people of different ethnic, economic, and social backgrounds suffer discrimination, indifference, injustice, and violence today. We must reject this exclusion and isolation, and not think of any group as others, but rather as our own brothers and sisters. This openness of heart and mind must be taught and nurtured in the homes and in schools. Walking the path of peace is not always easy, but it is the only authentic response to violence. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, humanity must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love. I urge all people, especially young men and women, to respond to Dr. King s prophetic words and know that a culture of nonviolence is not an unattainable dream, but a path that has produced divisive results. The consistent practice of nonviolence has broken barriers, bound wounds, healed nations-and it can heal Chicago. On July 7 the Dan Ryan Peace Protest made a strong statement in support of action to stop the violence in Chicago. All were grateful that the protests occurred without any incidents and with no arrests. Cardinal Cupich strongly supported the protest with his own call for change in our way of thinking: History has proven many times that non-violent action and peaceful protest have the power to create change. The change we need in this moment is to end a culture of violence and indifference. This is a priority we must all embrace and for which we must all work. I applaud the courage shown by young people in our city and across the country demanding their right to life and human dignity, given by God and guaranteed by our nation s founders. They make us proud. They give us hope. Let us pray that as members of the Church community here at St. Luke Parish we can add our prayers and support to advance peace in our communities. The last date for you to enter this information is Sunday, July 29. Ministry Scheduler Pro will not allow any entries after July 29. Remember: If you miss the July 29 deadline to enter your dates, you will need to find your own substitutes for the dates you are assigned. We will start accepting requests for 2019 Mass intentions beginning tomorrow (Monday). All intentions must be accompanied by the 2019 Mass Intention Request Form which will be available at the parish office, online, or in the church vestibule and your $10 offering (make checks payable to St. Luke Church). We will not be accepting 2019 Mass Intentions over the phone at this time. NEW THIS YEAR: COLLECTIVE MASS INTENTIONS At one Mass each Sunday, following the rotational schedule below, more than one intention will be offered. This will help to accommodate people who request the same date. LUKE River Forest, IL If you are an adult, 19 years of age or older, who has received your First Communion, and regularly attends Mass, but was never confirmed, this process is for you to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation! All preparation meetings and reception of the sacrament will take place at Ascension Parish in Oak Park. Meetings will be held on consecutive Tuesdays from September 4 through October 4. In addition, one Saturday meeting on September 22 will be held beginning at 3:15 pm and continuing through the 5:00 Mass. A maximum of one class can be missed. There is a $70 fee to cover the cost of books and materials. There will be reading assigned in preparation for each class. Sponsors are encouraged, but not required, to attend. The Peace & Justice Committee will continue its Summer Book Discussion series tomorrow (Monday) night at 7:30 pm in the Hospitality House. The group has been exploring Jeannine Hill Fletcher s book The Sin of White Supremacy and will examine Chapter 5 this week. The series will wrap up on August 6. Catholic Charities is seeking donations of backpacks and school supplies that can be handed out at the annual free Community Health Fair at St. Frances of Rome Church on August 18. Suggested items include: New backpacks Pens and pencils Glue, scissors, erasers Crayons and markers Rulers and folders Notebooks and college and wide-ruled paper Bring your donations to any weekend Mass between now and August 12 and place them in the Backpack Drive container in the back of church. 5 The Prime Timers had a great turn-out for their visit to the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe this past week. Even though a summer storm cut the tram ride short, the group still enjoyed the endless multitude of colorful flowers and trees. The Japanese Gardens also were a big hit, as was the café, where the group enjoyed a delightful lunch to pass the time between showers. All in all, the trip is worth making, especially at this time of the year. Prime Timers Bridge Day This Monday, July 23 Noon to 2:30 pm, Hospitality House Are you, or someone you know, interested in learning more about the Catholic Faith? Or do you need to prepare for sacraments that you missed in your younger days? St. Luke s RCIA Program will be starting again this fall. For new inquirers as well as those who have been away from the Church for a while, this program has inspired many to become a member of the Catholic Church or to be renewed in their faith in Christ Jesus. Please call the Parish Office at for more information. Newcomers with at least a basic knowledge of the game are always welcome to drop in! The Dominican Literacy Center is in great need of women volunteers for its session, which begins in September. This program offers one-to-one tutoring to immigrant women in the Melrose Park area for speaking, writing, and reading English. A time commitment of one and a half hours per week is requested. Classes are held at the Dominican Literacy Center, which is located on the second floor of Sacred Heart Parish Convent at 1503 Rice Street in Melrose Park. Participants need to attend four training sessions, which will be held on the evenings of August 14, 16, 20, and 22. Each session (held at the Dominican Literacy Center) will begin at 6:30 pm. 6 Children and adults are invited to audition for Ballet Légere s 34th annual production of The Nutcracker on the weekend of August The production is looking for girls 4-and-a-half years and older and boys 5-12 years old, as well as teen through adult dancers, gymnasts, and tumblers. Communion Visits and Ministry of Care A parish priest or Minister of Care will be happy to visit those who are sick or homebound. Please call the rectory to make arrangements. Baptism Baptisms take place on the first and third Sundays of each month, except during Lent. Preparation meetings are held on the first Monday of every month for the parents of children who will be baptized. Arrangements can be made by calling the rectory. Marriage Couples wishing to be married should call the rectory to set up an appointment with one of the parish priests at least six months in advance of the desired wedding date. Anointing of the Sick Elderly parishioners, those in poor health or who are anticipating surgery can call the rectory to arrange to receive the sacrament of anointing.
