3 Despite his prominence as one of the four Gospel writers, very little is actually known about St. Luke the Evangelist except for a few fragments from Scripture, some further conjecture by early Church historians, and some additional legends that spawned through the centuries. Judging from his background and writings, Luke was born a Greek Gentile in Antioch, Syria. We know he was not one of the 12 Apostles and that he never met Jesus himself. He is believed to be the only non-jewish writer in the Bible. As he wrote in the preface to his Gospel, he studied the stories of Jesus life and wrote his account based on eyewitnesses who saw these things from the beginning in order that we know the full truth. Thus, he gave us the longest and most detailed version of the four Gospels, and one that has been proven to be historically correct. Saints Mark and Paul are two of his sources, as he is mentioned in the Epistles as having accompanied both on their travels. The Gospel of Mark, a companion of Peter and Paul, is dated to about AD, and so Luke s Gospel is believed to have been created a few years later. Certainly, it was written before The Acts of the Apostles, which Luke also is credited with authoring. Luke s Gospel is often referred to as the first volume of a two-part series that leads into Acts, the story of Jesus followers after Pentecost. Both have a similar preface, addressed to Theophilus, a Roman official. Because Acts starts to use the pronoun we from Chapter 16 on, it is believed that Luke was writing first-hand about Paul s missionary journeys from Troas in 51 AD up to Paul s execution in Rome. In 2 Timothy 4:11, Paul writes in his last days, Only Luke is with me. It is from Paul s mention of Luke as our dear doctor (Colossians 4:14) that we believe Luke was a physician. Luke s connection to the art world is based more on tenuous legend. He is credited with painting a number of original Madonna and Child portraits, including the most famous one that hangs in the Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica in Rome. One story tells of him listening to the Blessed Mother s stories of Jesus as he painted that image in the home of St. John in Ephesus. This is one reason it is believed Luke has the most detailed account of Jesus birth in his Gospel. In fact, Luke s Gospel is the only one to give us the words that became the Hail Mary and the Memorare. Some scholars note that Luke s Gospel emphasizes Jesus identification with and compassion for the poor and the oppressed, as well as the evangelization of Gentiles and the role women played in Christ's ministry. Luke paints the humble birthplace of Jesus in the manger and introduces the shepherds into the Nativity scene in contrast to the Magi in Matthew s account. He gives us the parables of the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son, and also the scene with Martha and Mary. A patron is a model of holiness and an example to all those who follow the same pursuit as a particular saint. Hence, Luke is patron of artists and physicians, but also of bachelors, brewers, butchers, notaries, and bookbinders. Luke is usually pictured with a pen, reflecting his Gospel authorship, an ox, a symbol of his Gospel portrayal of Christ as the ultimate sacrifice for our redemption, or the famous medical symbol of the caduceus, a staff wrapped by two snakes. Look above the archway above our church s front doorway and you will see these symbols. And, despite the tenuous connection to any documented painting of Mary, our patron of artists is also shown with the brush and easel, such as the stained glass depiction in our own parish rectory window. Luke s Gospel is used extensively during the Church s C Cycle of Mass readings, so expect to hear more about St. Luke in the new liturgical year beginning this coming Advent. But today we rejoice in having St. Luke as the patron of our parish, someone who did not touch or see Jesus and yet still believed strongly enough to give witness to the Savior both in words and actions and possibly even in art. 5 The Gift of Life and Our Respect for It Through the Eyes of St. Luke The 13 years I spent on the faculty of Mundelein Seminary gave me a deeper appreciation for how God calls people to serve in the Church, some ideas about how I could personally foster vocations and journeys with the Lord, and a deeper knowledge of the Church s resources, especially of the Archdiocese of Chicago. You all have ownership in the entire Church of Chicago since you contribute to its upkeep, but many of you may not know much about one of its greatest resources, in terms of its history and its sacred beauty: the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary. This past week I gave some parishioners a brief tour of the seminary grounds. The visit reminded me of how everyone there has learned to appreciate and care for the beautiful campus, its buildings and bridges, and how they were all built from the simplest structures, such as the gymnasium, to the classroom buildings and the beautiful Chapel of the Immaculate Conception. There is a noticeable progression in architectural style depending on the purpose and use of the building, with the most attention to sacred beauty and ornate detail coming to a pinnacle in the main chapel where the use of columns and symbols in stained glass all point to the glory of God. If I hadn t had the opportunity to minister there to the hundreds of men pursuing their call to the priesthood, I would never have learned to appreciate the different levels of architecture and the story they tell and how we respect our connection with this on our journey of faith. The church structure at St. Luke is no different. Its stained glass tells a story. (Ask Deacon Paul Faherty or his wife Clare about many church tours they ve given or about the book Paul put together some years back explaining all the stained glass panels.) The stone construction indicates the care with which people want to glorify God through a sacred space that is worthy of worship. If you look carefully above the doorway on Lake Avenue, to the left and right of the name St. Luke Church, you can see symbols adorning the church portal. The left symbol features the ox, the sign of the writer of the third Gospel. On the right is the painter s palette, paintbrush, and the caduceus, the symbol of one in the medical field. Ordinarily we enter the church and pass by these (Continued on page 7) The visit of Pope Francis last month was a vivid reminder of the unity we share as Catholics throughout the world, especially with those living in poverty and in missionary lands. Today he is asking us to join him in giving expression to that unity by supporting the Churches at the margins through the annual collection on World Mission Sunday. While we may not be the ones who travel afar to preach the Gospel, we can be missionary disciples by our generous support of those who do. The churches supported by the Pope s Society for the Propagation of the Faith oftentimes suffer from great poverty, and even violent persecution, social unrest, and wars. They need our help. They need our financial support, and they need our prayers. By contributing to the appeal on World Mission Sunday we are saying to our brothers and sisters around the globe: You are not forgotten! The Church is with you in spirit; we embrace you and we seek justice. Let s let the Holy Father know we stand with him. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Blase J. Cupich The Archdiocese of Chicago is providing a free workshop on local ecological resources this afternoon from 1:30 to 3:30 pm at Ascension Church in Oak Park. This is an opportune moment for anyone interested in joining St. Luke s new Green Team. The team is open to all those in the parish who are interested in creating a plan for our pastor, the parish staff, and parish committees on how to make our parish a better steward of the ecological resources we use on a daily basis. This comes in response to the Pope s recent call to protect Earth, Our Common Home, and Archbishop Cupich s urging for parishes to form Green Teams. We would like to draw representatives from diverse backgrounds, including teenagers, parents, and senior citizens for St. Luke s Green Team. All of which, we hope, will help our children and families to receive special blessings as we worship together at the 9:00 Family Mass. Thanks to everyone who took a baby bottle for Respect Life Sunday and are filling it with loose change during October, which is Respect Life Month. St. Luke s Respect Life Committee will collect the bottles at the Masses on the weekend of October 31- November 1. 7 Everyone is invited to join us for a special treat at the 9:00 Family Mass on the Solemnity of All Saints Day on Sunday, November 1. Some of the children who are preparing for First Communion this year will come to church dressed as their favorite saint. Our little saints will be in the entrance procession. The children and the saints they portray will be recognized by Father John Szmyd during the Mass. Happy All Saints Day to all! ~Sister Colleen Nolan, OP Director of Religious Education The Prime Timers Beerfest is on Saturday, November 7, from 3:00-5:00 pm in the Hospitality House. A trained beer expert, who is a grandson of one of our Prime Timer members, will explain the history of craft beers and offer suggestions on how to pair beers with food. Samples of different beers will be provided. This is a great opportunity to learn about the newest craft beers that are so popular today. The cost is $5.00, payable at the door. Seating is limited, so we need to know who is coming. Please call Ann O Connell by Wednesday, November 4, at This event is sponsored by the Prime Timers, but the Beerfest is open to the entire parish. We hope to see many different faces. All of the 8 th Grade Confirmation Candidates will attend a special program with Mrs. Bridget Sperduto, Executive Director of The Well, tomorrow (Monday) in Waldron Hall from 3:45-5:45 pm. Her interactive presentation called Love is the Answer is always enjoyed by each year s Confirmation class. We look forward to welcoming Mrs. Sperduto back! This event is open to single Catholic women ages who would like to pray and share with Sisters from different religious communities in the Chicago area as they discern their vocation. The weekend is a great opportunity to be a part of community life, while having the opportunity to ask questions about discernment and get answers in real time. The retreat is sponsored by the Office for Religious/ Chicago Archdiocesan Vocation Association. For more information, contact Sr. Theresa Sullivan at sistertheresa.sullivan@doc.org or Register at From the Pastor continued from page 5 symbols without a thought about them. However, they hold the key to what our patron should mean to us. As we celebrate the feast of St. Luke the Evangelist this weekend, let us be reminded that we belong to the only St. Luke Catholic Church in the archdiocese. Let us walk home with a greater sense of ownership and being a part of something that is one, holy, catholic and apostolic. Perhaps we can pray this day through St. Luke s intercession and teach our loved ones and children one new thing that they do not know about our patron that can help us give greater glory to God in the special place that is St. Luke Church. Fr. Szmyd The concerns for non-violence, sustainable development, justice and peace, and care for our environment are of vital importance for humanity. They cannot, however, be understood apart from a profound reflection upon the innate dignity of every human life from conception to natural death: a dignity conferred by God Himself and thus inviolable. ~ Pope Benedict XVI s July 17, 2008, address Welcoming Celebration by the Young People OCTOBER 18, 2015 Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time 7

In addition, we have worked hard to maintain low activity fees for team sports in some cases, the actual cost of the season exceeds the per-player payment by over $50. Credit for the success of our programs belongs to our many dedicated volunteers, fundraising efforts, the coaches who work hard year after year, and the support of 500 Club members. The continued success of these programs depends directly upon the generous support of our 500 Club members. The St. Luke 500 Club is a fun and exciting way to support St. Luke Athletics. 100% of the proceeds go directly to support the St. Luke Athletic program.
