3 Today is World Mission Sunday, a day that leads us to the heart of our Christian faith! Your generosity to the special collection today will help support the work of priests, religious, and lay leaders in more than 1,100 mission dioceses around the globe who are serving those in most need. Together with our brothers and sisters in the missions, parishes worldwide are offering prayers and sacrifices on this day so that others may come to know Jesus and to experience His mercy as we express our concern for those in the greatest need! Let this celebration of World Mission also be a day to honor the many ways we can commit ourselves to missionary discipleship. As Psalm 104 says, Send forth your spirit and renew the face of the earth! Below are five suggestions on how you can get started: 1. Go outside your comfort zone: seek out and meet a neighbor for the first time, visit a new local service organization, or listen carefully to someone from a different generation than yourself. 2. Pray for the Universal Church and for each of the five parts of the Church world: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. Pray the World Mission Rosary (see tinyurl.com/ wmrosary) and offer a decade of Hail Mary s for each part of the world, asking God to watch over each one. 3. Learn more about the current missionary outreach efforts happening around your parish community. Or learn about one of the many Catholic international missionary organizations that are based right here in Chicagoland, such as: Solidarity Bridge, or Maryknoll Mission Center Chicago, or Divine Word Missionaries, or Comboni Lay Missionary Program, or 4. Meditate on Scripture by yourself or with family and friends. A good place to start is with Luke 4:14-30 or John 17: Consider how God may be calling you to a deeper vocation, to do all things with love for God and neighbor and to continue the mission of Jesus Christ. 5. Donate to today s World Mission Sunday Collection. The funds collected will be added to the Universal Solidarity Fund, which supports struggling churches that were recently established or that cannot support themselves or have experienced an emergency. Jackson, a 7th grader in the Religious Education Program and a student at Roosevelt Middle School, has been diagnosed with Leukemia. His mother, Esther Zurita, is requesting prayers for her son. LUKE River Forest, IL ABOUT: The Lord God has given me a well-trained tongue, that I might know how to speak to the weary a word that will rouse them. (Isaiah 50:4) If this Scripture touches something inside of you, we invite you to consider joining us as a lector at Mass. WHAT WE DO: We proclaim the first two readings from the Old and the New Testament during the Liturgy of the Word, lead the Prayers of the Faithful, and sometimes read the announcements for the week at Sunday and holy day Masses. QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS NEEDED: This ministry is open to all parishioners who are confirmed and of at least high school age and who have a special reverence for the Word of God and a desire to proclaim it with distinction. Occasionally younger children may serve at Masses with Children s Liturgy of the Word. Training is provided. TIME COMMITMENT: Right now we have about 30 lectors, so everyone is scheduled on a rotating basis, usually once or twice a month. Everyone s Mass preferences and availability to serve is taken into consideration when making the schedule. INTERESTED? I believe that Sacred Scripture is the Word of God, and I have deep respect for God s presence in that Word. I don t take this lightly. As I approach the pulpit, I tend to get a little nervous because I want to proclaim the Word in the best way to get across God s message, so I say a prayer as I walk up the steps to the pulpit and God somehow always makes it sound just perfect. ~Sheila Price

5 All parishioners are invited to a special Mass at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 4, to remember all of our friends and relatives who have died over the past year. Invitations have gone out to the families of all those who celebrated funeral or memorial Masses at St. Luke. But all others who have lost loved ones in other parts of the country are also invited to attend this special Mass. The families and friends of recently deceased individuals have told us they find great consolation in having our entire community join them in celebrating the lives of all those who have gone on to eternal life with Christ. A reception will follow the Mass. All those planning to join us are asked to RSVP by Friday, October 27. There is a simple way of doing one of the corporal works of mercy: support the Blessed Sacrament Food Pantry. Located on the lower level of The Learning Center, it serves those needing assistance in North Lawndale and Little Village. Please bring your donations to Mass on Saturday evening or on Sunday and place them in the baskets at the back of church. Since personal care items that cannot be purchased with food stamps, we re seeking donations of the following personal care items: diapers, hand soap, toothpaste, toilet paper, wipes and tissues The most needed non-perishable foods items are: cereal (hot or cold), peanut butter, coffee and tea, pasta and rice, canned veggies, fruits, and beans, and canned soups and stews Cash donations are always appreciated. Cash is needed to purchase fresh fruit and vegetables, eggs and meat, when available, from the Chicago Food Depository. His talk will focus on Dr. King s assertion that the Civil Rights Movement was both a political and spiritual challenge to redeem the soul of America. 9 In commemoration of November as National Black Catholic History Month, St. Catherine of Siena St. Lucy Parish is inviting the public to hear Dr. C. Vanessa White speak about African-American Catholics as Authentically Black and Truly Catholic. At Catholic Theological Union, Dr. White is Assistant Professor of Spirituality and Ministry, Director of the Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies and the Master of Arts in Specialized Ministries, as well as Director of the Certificate in Pastoral Studies. She is extensively published and is widely respected as a popular presenter. St. Catherine of Siena St. Lucy s Praise Choir will open the evening with songs in the African-American tradition under the direction of Dr. Julius White. The event will be on Thursday, November 9, at 7:30 pm at the church, 38 N. Austin Boulevard in Oak Park. A freewill donation of $10 is suggested. Communion Visits and Ministry of Care A parish priest or Minister of Care will be happy to visit those who are sick or homebound. Please call the rectory to make arrangements. Baptism Baptisms take place on the first and third Sundays of each month. Preparation meetings are held on the first Monday of every month for the parents of children who will be baptized. Arrangements can be made by calling the rectory. Marriage Couples wishing to be married should call the rectory to set up an appointment with one of the parish priests at least six months in advance of the desired wedding date. Anointing of the Sick Elderly parishioners, those in poor health or who are anticipating surgery can call the rectory to arrange to receive the sacrament of anointing.
