Paul Reicher, Patti Sheehan, Austyn Smith, Tom Trankina, Michael Gerard White, Ann Marie Wojcik Each day the people are to go out and gather their daily portion; thus will I test them, to see whether they follow my instructions or not. ~Exodus 16:4 When the Israelites gathered more than their daily portion of manna, the surplus became wormy and rotten. In the same way today, God calls us to be content with a fair portion and to be willing to share the rest. 3 If you or someone you know is feeling called to join the Catholic Church, to receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and/or Confirmation, or simply to grow in your understanding of the Catholic faith, St. Luke Parish invites you to participate in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). This process involves regular meetings over the next eight months, culminating at the Easter Vigil next April. Through this process the Church welcomes converts into our community, and provides baptized Catholics an opportunity to return to more active participation in the Church or to learn more about the Catholic faith. For information about this process, please contact Deacon Bob Slobig at or by at Maple Meadows Golf Club 272 Addison Road Wood Dale, Illinois 1:00 pm Shotgun Start Come join your fellow parishioners for a fun, casual event at Maple Meadows, which is a short 20 to 25-minute drive from St. Luke s. The outing is open to anyone who wishes to attend, and parishioners are encouraged to invite neighbors and friends. Appropriate-age children are also welcome! The fee for the event is $160 per person, which covers lunch and a welcoming gift, green fees, cart, games, unlimited beverages for the entire day and evening, raffle tickets, and dinner. To register, ask a question, or make a suggestion, contact Charlie Smith at lukesmensclub@gmail.com or City of Geneva Photo A short train ride to Geneva, Ill., on July 23 gave the Prime Timers plenty of time to shop, dine, and peruse the quaint little city on the scenic Fox River. AUGUST 2, 2015 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 3

Be sure to list your name, address, and phone number in case we have a question. All requests will be taken in the order received. Requests will not be taken by phone. Five Masses per person will be scheduled initially. Remaining requests will be scheduled on a rotating basis to allow everyone an opportunity to get the dates of their choice. Make checks payable to St. Luke Religious Education and drop them off or mail them to: St. Luke Religious Education Office 519 Ashland Avenue River Forest, IL Thank you for your prompt payment, which ensures that we will have adequate supplies for the coming year! Jesus The Bread of Life For this Sunday and the next two, the Gospel of John will be proclaimed to us, most notably the chapters which comprise the Bread of Life discourses. The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke do not contain this, although they have their own versions of the multiplication of loaves and the institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper. It is in these discourses that the mind and heart of Jesus is revealed more deeply to us and what He intends to do in giving us His Body and Blood. This weekend s scriptures begin with the grumbling of the Israelites in the desert (Exodus 16). They fear dying of famine and are not satisfied with the food the Lord provides for them. Their cries are heard. The power of God and His Word are revealed. The Word of God that comes down to us speaks to our hearts through the ages. What happens when we hear the words of the book of Exodus? What happens when we hear of flesh and bread provided from above to sustain God s people? What happens when we hear the words of the second Eucharistic Prayer in the middle of Mass? You are indeed Holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness. Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray, by sending down your Spirit upon them like the dew fall, so that they may become for us the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. The words dew fall may at first sound strange to us. When we hear these words as people of faith, we should instantly be transported back in time, journeying along with the Hebrew people in the desert, realizing that all good things are from the providence of God. God s goodness in the form of manna, the bread, the dew which formed upon the earth, is what sustained Moses and the Israelites. Jesus in the Eucharistic bread and wine is what sustains us here and now. If these words have ever sounded odd to you since their use in the Roman Missal issued in 2011, realize the spiritual connection between then and now! Much adew about nothing? No, not when it connects us more closely to our Lord Jesus. 4 WELCOME TO ST. LUKE River Forest, IL Fr. Szmyd
5 This Saturday, August 8, is the date of the Prime Timers outing to see the Opera in Focus Puppet Show. The current show features a medley of very familiar show tunes that everyone will enjoy. Detained immigrants those who do not qualify for release or Alternative to Detention (ATD) programs should be held in non-penal settings which reflect the conditions of normal life to the extent feasible. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security should provide generous access to international organizations, faith-based groups, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and the press at all of its facilities. For more information call The school supplies that are needed include new backpacks, pens, pencils, notebooks, glue, scissors, paper, rulers, folders, crayons, and markers. Please join us in making this year s Health Fair a tremendous success. To volunteer, please call Esmeralda at Thank you for your generosity! There are just a few more chances for lively conversation and a chance to meet new friends at the Theology on Tap gatherings. Organized by the Archdiocese s Young Adult Ministry Office, these evening programs combine food, fun, and fellowship with talks on issues relevant to young adults from relationships, social media, and athletics to spirituality and faith in the workplace. All young adults are welcome, and admission is free. The times and locations are posted online at The finale event will be at 3:00 pm on Saturday, August 8, at Holy Name Cathedral with Archbishop Blase Cupich, followed by Mass with Bishop John Manz at 5:00. Everyone is invited to stay for the Nightfever program, which is explained below. 6 Do you feel lost, alone, or bored in your marriage? Are you frustrated, hurt, or angry with your spouse? Are you constantly fighting? The word Retrouvaille (re-tro-vi with a long i) is French for rediscovery. The Retrouvaille Program helps couples heal and renew their marriages and offers tools that are helpful in rediscovering what it means to have a loving marriage relationship. The Retrouvaille Program consists of a weekend experience followed by a series of six post-weekend sessions. Upcoming weekends: September December 4-6 To learn more about the program, visit the website To register for one of the upcoming weekends, contact: Robin and Phil Kain at or robin.kain@yahoo.com. WELCOME TO ST. LUKE River Forest, IL The idea behind Nightfever is simple: Open the church, invite people in, and let Christ work. And the effect has been remarkable the last two years. This year Holy Name Cathedral will be open from 7:30 pm to midnight on Saturday, August 8, for an evening of music, adoration, and reconciliation. The event will begin with Mass at 7:30 and conclude with Night Prayer at 11:30. Adoration will take place from 9:00-11:30, with live worship music and priests available during this time for reconciliation and consultation. Everyone is welcome to come and stay as long as they like and experience the healing power of prayer. To learn more, visit nightfeverchicago.org.
