3 HE IS RISEN! Alleluia! Alleluia! Happy Easter! Each year the Church is renewed in faith by its celebration of Easter and the 50 days that it takes to do justice to this celebration. During this time, there is tremendous potential for us to be more deeply configured to the Risen Lord if we listen attentively to God s Word, which speaks of the incredible encounters others had with the Resurrected Christ. Oh, to have been a bystander in the garden near the tomb or to have walked along the way to have observed those believers who were marvelously transformed by having seen Jesus again or to have known the disciples or Apostles of our Lord. Think of what it was like for them to have had their fear and total disappointment replaced with the joy of knowing He lives! Imagine what was going on in their hearts! Our 40-day preparation for Easter should be seen as a great gift to us. Additional time for prayer, retreats and missions, and spiritual reading allow us the opportunity to grow in the practice of our faith. Perhaps we were able to replace old, worn-out ways and habits with fresh, positive approaches to looking at faith and living a more conscious life of prayer. Sometimes our inspiration can come, too, from the newest members of the Church (1000s entered at the Easter Vigil including Alisha Daniel here at St. Luke). Their presence should prompt us to see if there are any neighbors, spouses, friends, or family members who would benefit from having a personal relationship with Jesus and being part of Church with the rest of us. Think of what it would be like to have them with us, accompanying us on the journey of faith, praying with us when we worship, and offering assistance in our good works or in ministry? Why not invite them? There is no better time than now to start thinking about making a commitment in faith to Christ and His Church! Another thing that engages us with the mystery of this holy season is the beauty of Easter that surrounds us. We are most grateful to everyone, under the leadership of Sarina Butler, who assisted in making our sanctuary and church come alive with beauty. Offer words of thanks with me to all who gave of themselves: to those who provided music, sang in our choirs, served Mass, assisted with proclaiming God s Word or distributing the Body and Blood of Christ, those who assisted in welcoming others as greeters and ushers, our sacristans and teams who cleaned the church, and, of course, our deacons. It takes much planning, preparation, and effort to pull this all together. For all of your time, energy, patience, and fortitude, thank you! We appreciate all that you do! As we continue to pray for peace in our world, let us remember that it is the Holy Spirit that grants us His peace. It is the Holy Spirit that helps us to contemplate the saving Paschal Mystery of Jesus in our lives and to make sense of the joys, crosses, sufferings, and triumphs we have each and every day with all our brothers and sisters in Christ wherever they may be. Happy Easter! May the Risen Lord bring you joy and peace! ~ Fr. John APRIL 16, 2017 Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord 3

5 The image shown here has grown in popularity ever since Pope John Paul II designated the first Sunday after Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday in However, its origins date back to the time of St. Augustine, who called the Easter Octave the days of mercy and pardon that focus on the merciful love of God that lies behind the Easter Paschal Mystery we just celebrated. The image came in a vision to St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, an Our Lady of Mercy Sister who lived in Poland from 1905 to In one of his many visits to her, our Lord asked that this devotion be reinstated on this specific day. As St. Pope John Paul II explained, the rays emanating from Christ s heart symbolize his outpouring grace of mercy upon us. The Pope decreed that this Sunday be enriched by a plenary indulgence so that the faithful might foster a growing love for God and for their neighbor, and after they have obtained God s pardon, they in turn might be persuaded to show a prompt pardon to their brothers and sisters. The plenary indulgence is granted under the usual conditions: sacramental confession, Eucharistic Communion, and prayer for the intentions of the Pope in a spirit that is completely detached from affection for sin, even a venial sin as well as taking part in the prayers and devotions held in honor of Divine Mercy, or while in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, exposed or reserved in the tabernacle by reciting the Our Father, the Creed and a devout prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus (e.g., Merciful Jesus, I trust in you! ). In keeping with this tradition, St. Luke will offer special times for the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation next Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 am and 3:30 to 4:30 pm. On Divine Mercy Sunday, April 23, we will have a Holy Hour from 3:00 to 4:00 pm with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, recitation of the rosary and the Divine Mercy chaplet, and Benediction. Everyone is invited to join in this special prayer and devotion with us on this special day. To learn more about the ancient and modern traditions of Divine Mercy, St. Faustina, and the prayers for the Divine Mercy chaplet, go to the website of the National Shrine in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, at Calling all Bearcat Grads! 7 Saturday, April 1, was a day of music, prayer, teaching and insight as over 70 people deepened our relationship with the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. The ancient Celts called the Holy Spirit, the Wild Goose because instead of a calm and gentle dove, He is unpredictable and powerful, launching each of us into a dynamic life in Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. After our pastor, Fr. John Szmyd, welcomed the group, Dr. Mark Nimo led us in worship throughout the day. We began the day s teachings with Part I of Fr. Dave Pivanko s 14-week series The Wild Goose: God s Love Poured Out and broke out into small groups and shared our experience of God s love in our lives. Both Mark and Fr. Bob Miller wove their personal conversion stories into all the teachings: Salvation, the Trinity, New Life, Receiving God s Gifts, and Growth and Transformation. We closed with Fr. Bob and Fr. Steven Bauer laying hands on individuals for a greater outpouring of the Holy Spirit! Participants commented that they found the day amazing powerful a perfect conference at the right time and filled with the Holy Spirit. Special thanks to the Bible Study Team: Erin Dressel, Mark Garry, Heidi Peterson, Cathie Saunders, Diane Ruggie, Mike and Pat Willoughby, and the St. Luke Team: Anna Dooley, Meaghan Dressel, Lauretta Froelich Sr., Liz Froelich, James Froelich, Jim Froelich, and Daniel Ruggie. But this was only the beginning! If you missed the Wild Goose Encounter or you want to continue on in the series: Part I God s Love Poured Out will be shown on Thursday, May 4, at 7:00 pm in Waldron Hall followed by Part II The Breath of God. Both will be followed by small group discussion. Join us on May 4, and let the Wild Goose in! APRIL 16, 2017 Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord 7
