We are called to be good stewards by using those gifts to do the work that He has planned for each of us. If we deny our gifts or fail to use them as God calls us to use them, then some part of His work will be left undone. 3 And how are the children is a translation of the traditional greeting between Masai warriors. It is like saying, How are you? The answer is always the same whether or not the Masai warriors have children, All the children are well. Meaning, of course, that peace and safety prevail, that the priorities of protecting the young, the powerless, the little children, are in place. The Masai society has not forgotten its reason for being, its proper functions and responsibilities. All the children are well means that life is good. It means that the daily struggles faced by adults do not preclude proper caring for their young. Today, let us ask each other, How are the children? If asked this question, would your honest answer be, All the children are well. Or, would it be, They are not doing well and we are not doing well by them. Maybe my child(ren) are doing well, but in God s eyes, in the eyes of the people of God, we have to be totally honest and say, The children are not doing well. Children and youth are being killed in communities neighboring ours by errant gunfire; children and youth are being verbally, physically and sexually abused; children are innocent victims of bombings in the Gaza Strip, in Syria, in Afghanistan, in the Ukraine; young girls are the victims of kidnapping in Africa, young girls and boys are subjected to human trafficking and slavery in Nigeria and other places in our world. The children God s children are not doing well. Currently in the news in our country is the large influx of unaccompanied children from Honduras, Guatemala and other Central American countries fleeing poverty, gang violence and domestic abuse, only to endure the threat of kidnapping, rape, murder or simply falling off the top of trains as they traverse unfamiliar territory to seek a haven in the United States. The numbers are staggering: it is estimated that over 90,000 children and youth will attempt the perilous journey this year. What parent among us wouldn t do anything for their children to keep them safe, to give them a chance to avoid certain danger, and to be free of violence and hunger? As people of faith, we need to continue to ask the question, And how are the children? and prayerfully discern what our answer is and what we can do about this terrible truth. If all things are possible with God and we are the Body of Christ, we need to do something to improve the answer to the question, How are the children? Here are three ways to start: First, pray for all children who are placed in peril; pray for the parents of the children who have made the incredibly difficult decision to send their children on the perilous journey to the U.S.; pray for the countries the children come from and for the international community that remedies can be found for the conditions that make the perilous journey a better option than staying at home. Second, consider financially supporting the heroic efforts of Catholic Charities in the border states and here in Chicago to respond to the needs of the unaccompanied children. The Archdiocese of Chicago is providing support to the Archdiocese of San Antonio, where Bishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller, a former auxiliary bishop In Chicago, is now archbishop. Finally, pray for a humane solution to the immigration issue, for the passage of legislation that will respect the dignity of those individuals and families living and working among us and positively contributing to our communities. Adapted from material prepared by Priests for Justice for Immigrants ~Tony Graefe, St. Luke Peace and Justice Committee AUGUST 17, 2014 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time 3

4 4 Every summer each parish in the Archdiocese welcomes a member of one of the Church s many missionary communities to tell us about their work and ask our support. On August a member of Amor en Acción, a lay missionary community of the Archdiocese of Miami founded in 1976, will tell us about their work in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Let us look forward to learning about this special missionary effort. There will be a special second collection immediately after the regular collection next week. Please bring a little extra to offer support for their missionary work. Thank you. If you or someone you know is feeling called to join the Catholic Church, to receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and/or Confirmation, or simply to grow in your understanding of the faith, our parish invites you to participate in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. This process involves regular meetings over the next eight months culminating at the Easter Vigil next April. Through this process the Church welcomes converts into our community and provides baptized Catholics an opportunity to return to more active participation in the Church or to learn more about the Catholic faith. For information about this process, please contact Deacon Bob Slobig at or by at bobslobig@comcast.net. Be sure to put our monthly Coffee on the Plaza social on your calendar for next Sunday morning. Everyone is invited to share a few minutes of coffee and fellowship with parishioners after the 9:00 and 10:30 Masses and before the Noon Mass next Sunday, August 24. The event, which will be hosted this time by the teens who went on this summer s Youth Service Trips, will be a great opportunity to hear stories from their time in Appalachia! WELCOME TO ST. And let us pray that the leaders of our nation and of all nations may work untiringly to end all war and violence and to build a true and lasting peace among all peoples.
