It carries two important messages. First, no matter how little we have, we always have enough to share. Second, Christ can take our humble gifts and do great things with them if we are just willing to let Him. 3 Children came from many parishes in Oak Park and River Forest for a fun time of learning at our 2015 Vacation Bible School. Drawing on the elements such as fire and ice, the 83 children enjoyed learning about God s power to provide, comfort, heal, and forgive, and how God loves us forever. Youths visiting from France were our Crew Leaders for the week, along with some of the children s mothers and grandmothers, who also helped with snacks, set-up, and take-down, and so much more. The children loved the songs we sang each day as well as activities such Bible Expeditions, Imagination Station, Glacier Game, and the KidVid Cinema. LUKE River Forest, IL A Vacation With the Lord Jesus invited us last Sunday to Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while. (Mark 6:30) In Jesus day when people lived simply and could not travel about as easily as we do today, they most likely were content to spend time in nearby localities, outside with nature, or visiting family or friends. This reminds me of the wisdom of the late Francis Cardinal George, who shared his thoughts on summer in a 2004 Chicago Sun-Times article. It gave a wonderful insight into why we need time away. He wrote that a parish in a northwestern suburb polled its people about how they practice their faith. They discovered that the single biggest reason many did not come regularly to Mass on Sundays was sheer busy-ness: children s sports, shopping not possible to do during the week, visits out of town, tasks for which there isn t time except on the weekend. The more complicated personal or ideological reasons which priests speculate about when they wonder about participation at Mass paled before the basic fact that people follow schedules which leave them no time even to worship God. Enter the summer vacation. It, too, can become another forced march, a change of venue but not a change of pace. Vacations can be simply diversion or distraction; or they can be time to alter the rhythm of life. Vacations can be an escape from the habits of regular life, habits dictated by responsibilities that we embrace but which can be deadening. Why alter the rhythm of life? To be in touch with things your ordinary life hides from you. Vacations can be a way of seeing things differently, of entering a different world. There can be more time for prayer, which brings us into God s embrace, his take on the world. There can be time to deepen friendships, even with family members. There can be time to read, especially books that one s regular schedule might not permit you to enjoy. The occasionally altered rhythm of our lives, and the need to reserve time for others who are habitually separated from us, should be reflected in a healthy civic culture which, at particular moments and in spectacular places, brings together those whose personal habits normally keep them apart. Vacations, in this sense, are not an escape from life nor just an enrichment of it. They are an enlargement of it. Remember to make the Lord a part of your summer vacations. Fr. Szmyd

5 Both the Bridge Group and the Amen Stitching Group are meeting this week in the Hospitality House. The Bridge players will meet on Monday at noon, and the Stitching Group will meet on Wednesday at 9:00 am. The Prime Timers are sponsoring a joint event with the seniors from St. Vincent Ferrer Parish on Saturday, August 8. We will attend the Opera in Focus puppet show in Rolling Meadows followed by lunch at Sam s of Arlington. The cost is $25 for the theater and bus. Lunch is on your own.
