FROM THE PASTOR The saints and spiritual guides of our Church have offered us through their holy example and wisdom many ways by which we can be aligned and conformed to the will of God. For all of us baptized in Jesus, this means centering the entirety of our lives in Christ. The primary channel by which this happens is by having an active life of prayer. Lent is a great gift of the Church to all of us because it encourages us to avail ourselves of every opportunity we have to focus on prayer and devotion out of love for Jesus. As promised in last week s column, we are providing, courtesy of Dynamic Catholic, an outline for a prayer process. You might have a process of your own in place already. If so, that s great! If not, this process offers a possibility to give greater focus to all our lives in prayer. Give it a try and see! ~Fr. Szmyd THE PRAYER PROCESS ❶ GRATITUDE: Begin by thanking God in a personal dialogue for whatever you are most grateful for today. ❷ AWARENESS: Revisit the times in the past 24 hours when you were and were not the-bestversion-of-yourself. Talk to God about these situations and what you learned from them. ❸ SIGNIFICANT MOMENTS: Identify something you experienced in the last 24 hours and explore what God might be trying to say to you through that event (or person). ❹ PEACE: Ask God to forgive you for any wrong you have committed (against yourself or another person, or Him) and to fill you with a deep and abiding peace. ❺ FREEDOM: Speak with God about how He is inviting you to change your life, so you can experience the freedom to be the-best-versionof-yourself. ❻ OTHERS: Lift up to God anyone you feel called to pray for today, asking God to bless and guide them. ❼ Pray the Our Father. 2 WELCOME TO ST. 4 This week is a very special Candle-lit Way of the Cross at 6:00 pm on Friday in Lent, followed by a simple, meatless supper at 6:30 pm in Waldron Hall all hosted by St. Luke School s 5 th Grade. Simplify your Friday meatless meal planning and leave the cooking to us this Lent. Families with babies and young children are especially welcome. Please join us whenever you can for these heartwarming Fridays of prayer and fellowship! Although our shared faith has deep roots in the cultures of Central and Eastern Europe, this faith was severely tested with the repressive communist rule over the past century. Bishops, priests, and church leaders were arrested and martyred. Churches were confiscated, communities broken, and people forced to practice the faith in secret. Despite this religious persecution, the faithful of these 25 countries are rebuilding and renewing what was lost and your gift to today s special collection will make a difference to their faith communities. More information about this national collection and all of the projects that it supports can be found at Our two weekly Lenten discussion groups are open to anyone who would like to explore the ideas raised in Matthew Kelly s book, Rediscover Jesus. The women s group will meet every Tuesday in Lent from 1:30-2:30 pm in the Hospitality House. A second group, open to all, is meeting on Fridays right after the Simple Supper (approximately 7:15 pm) in the school s Faculty Lounge. Newcomers are welcome to drop in for one or all of the meetings. No registration is required. 4 The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation reconciles us with God and each other so we can renew our baptismal promises and fully celebrate the good news of Easter with faith, hope, and joy. To make the sacrament more available, St. Luke is offering Confessions on Saturday afternoons throughout Lent from 4:00-4:30 pm, especially for those planning to attend the 5:00 vigil Mass. Of course, the sacrament also is available after the two weekday morning Masses and the 8:00 am Mass on Saturday, and by calling the rectory to make a special appointment with a priest. WELCOME TO ST. LUKE River Forest, IL The Archdiocese of Chicago reports that all of the gifts received during the Annual Catholic Appeal s Commitment Weekend are being processed and are expected to be acknowledged by April 1. This includes gifts of cash, checks, and credit cards. For all those who are stretching out their contributions over this coming year, monthly pledge statements will start in May. It is very important that these pledges be paid so that our parish will reach and, hopefully, exceed our goal of $59,000. Once the pledge payments have exceeded our assigned goal, all of the additional funds will be returned to our parish for use in our ministries. Last year s collection resulted in 2017 ACA Results $55,174 Goal $91,058 Pledges more than $28,000 coming back to St. Luke, as is shown in this graph above. 5 It was a night to remember at the Oak Park Country Club as the Rauh Family (left, with Fr. John) joined hundreds of other well-wishers to toast Katie and Andy Rauh, the honorees of St. Luke s 29th Dinner Dance & Auction. Kitti McSorley, below left with daughter and son-inlaw, received the first Heart of St. Luke Award. The live and silent auction, the traditional Heads or Tails game, and rocking music filled the evening. All in all, it was another fun and successful event to provide funds for our school. Many heart-felt thanks go out to our Dinner Dance & Auction Chairs (shown above, from left to right): Ben and Shena Keith, Mike and Katie Ortiz, Keith and Colleen Weiler, Becca and Mick McDonnell, and Laura and Doug Hoey. They and many others put in many long hours making this event a beautiful evening and tribute to all of the supporters in our school community. 7 The Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) is seeking new members to begin serving our parish in the new term that starts this September. The Parish Council is designed to counsel the pastor as we grow as a community and in Jesus Christ. We seek parishioners who want to be actively involved and are willing to delve deep into pastoral matters, to listen to differing opinions, integrate varied points of view, and discern with others what is best for the parish. Each member allocates an average of 1 to 2 hours a week to PPC matters. The members attend meetings once a month from September to June. They are also asked to attend occasional ministry meetings within their committees, which include areas of Spiritual Life, Human Concerns, Catholic Education, and Parish Life. Being on Parish Council is a privilege and an inspiring experience. The members are all interesting, creative individuals, and we grow in our faith through service to the parish and by working with our wonderful pastoral staff. We pray and celebrate together. We need members with a range of skills and life experience, so please pray, consider what God is calling you to do, and reach out to Fr. John or Tom Jacobs. Rev. John Szmyd jszmyd@stlukeparish.org Tom Jacobs, PPC Chair thjacobs@earthlink.net This week CRS Rice Bowl helps us learn first-hand about Caring for God s Creation, which spells life-or-death for many like Safiata, a widow with 9 children and 16 grandchildren in the tiny land-locked country of Burkina Faso in northwest Africa. About 80% of the working population live off the land to make ends meet, and a steady supply of clean water is the main key to stability in the region. Read Safiata s story in the calendar that came with your Rice Bowl or online at crsricebowl.org. Then pray as you think about these questions: If you ve ever been stuck someplace without food or water for an extended period, how did it make you feel? Did you ever experience the compassion of a Good Samaritan? What difference would it make if your difficult situation was an everyday occurrence and not just temporary? Consider dropping 50 in your Rice Bowl this week for every faucet in your house that brings life-giving sustenance to your daily life. Try making the West African dish of Bean Cakes for your meatless meal on Friday. Include the following intention in your prayers at mealtime: For Safiata, and all farmers near and far, that they find abundant harvests to feed their families, their communities, and the world.
