3 The feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ and the Eucharistic processions on Corpus Christi Sunday are wonderful reminders of the great gift we have in the Mass and the tangible, physical presence of our Lord in the sacraments and the life of the church brought about each and every day through our priests. Just as it is for any parent and caregiver, the work of our priests is a 24/7 responsibility. And as any parent would know, a moment away to tend to one s own health and well-being is essential to that of the entire family. From June all priests of our archdiocese will convene for what is known as a priests convocation, which is a retreat away from the day-to-day responsibilities of their parishes and a time to gather together to grow in their own discipleship of Jesus Christ, to build community Lord Jesus Christ, eternal High Priest, you offered yourself to the Father on the altar of the Cross and through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit gave your priestly people a share in your redeeming sacrifice. Hear our prayer for all the priests of this Archdiocese of Chicago, especially as they gather in convocation. Grant that all who are ordained to the ministerial priesthood may be ever more conformed to you, the divine Master, the Good Shepherd. Amen. together as they labor in his vineyard, and to inspire each other to greater witness for the salvation of souls. This year s meeting theme, One in Christ, highlights that everything we are striving toward through our Renew My Church efforts to renew the Archdiocese of Chicago begins with our priests and the brotherhood they share. The only way to accomplish this is to gather all the priests together at this one time. Therefore, there will be no weekday Masses on these four days in most parishes. St. Luke, however, is fortunate to have Dominican Father Jack O Malley to assist our parish in offering both the 6:30 and 8:00 am Masses on each day of the convocation. Fr. Ron Hicks, Vicar General for the archdiocese, is asking everyone to pray for our priests and the success of their time away by reciting the prayer shown here each day up to and during the convocation. The Peace and Justice Committee s summer book discussion series will start tomorrow (Monday) with the book The Sin of White Supremacy by Jeannine Hill Fletcher. A professor at Fordham University, Hill Fletcher is the daughter of St. Luke parishioner Virginia Hill. Her book, which is published by Orbis Books and also available on Amazon.com, examines the role of the Church in racism and the ascendancy of white supremacy in our country and positive steps that can change our society. The group will meet in the Hospitality House from 7:30-9:00 pm on five Mondays: June 11 - Intro & Chapter 1 June 25 - Chapter 2 July 9 - Chapters 3 & 4 July 23 - Chapter 5 August 6 - Chapter 6 All St. Lukers are welcome to join the discussion. 4 SPECIAL COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND Many people remember with fondness the priest who baptized them, gave them First Communion, celebrated their marriage, visited them at home or in the hospital. These memories often involve priests who were ordained for our archdiocese and are now retired. Today s special collection is solely for these priests of our archdiocese. They receive no funds from the Religious Retirement Collection that is taken up in December. (Those funds go for our nation s religious sisters and brothers and religious order priests.) The Archdiocese of Chicago is committed to caring for our retired priests, but everyone s assistance is needed. Just consider these facts: There are over 200 retired archdiocesan priests. They represent 30% of all the priests serving in the archdiocese. Normal retirement age is 70 for Chicago priests, but 65 of these priests still live in a rectory and assist the parish on a regular basis, including St. Luke. Close to 140 retired priests celebrate Sunday Mass weekly, perform marriages and baptisms, and visit the sick in hospitals. Without them, many parishes wouldn t be able to offer the full range of Masses and sacraments. Forty-two retired priests are currently receiving nursing home assistance or have aides coming to their home or rectory. This care costs over $2 million annually. The priests pension fund was adversely affected by the economic downturn. Millions of dollars is needed in the coming years to bring it to appropriate funding levels. Come and join this group on all Thursdays this summer starting at 9:30 am on the Lake Street courts across from the Jewel Store. The Amen Stitching Group invites all those interested in any kind of needlework to attend their next monthly gathering this Friday from 9:30 to 11:30 am in the Hospitality House. The group has been working on sewing baptismal gowns for families with newborns who will be baptized in the coming year. 5 A Summer Camp Your Kids Will Love!!! Sign up now for the week of July 22-27! The highly-acclaimed Totus Tuus Summer Camp, a week-long Catholic youth program, is coming again to our area, hosted by St. Luke Parish this summer. Totus Tuus (which means totally yours in Latin) is a very popular summer camp that presents the Catholic faith to students entering grades 1 12 in a way that is engaging and FUN! Specially trained college missionaries lead our youths and teens through daily activities that keep them active and engaged, all while teaching them more about their Catholic faith! The Totus Tuus Program is divided into two levels with their own schedules: For children entering grades 1-6: 9:00 am to 2:30 pm Monday-Friday For junior high/high school students: 7:00 to 9:00 pm Sunday-Thursday Both day and evening programs will be held at St. Luke School. Please note: The Totus Tuus Program is extremely popular, and many families from neighboring areas look for Totus Tuus sites each summer. Since the program is limited to 90 children, we highly recommend that you register as soon as possible. Registration will be open on a first-come, first-served basis until we reach the maximum for each age group. Communion Visits and Ministry of Care A parish priest or Minister of Care will be happy to visit those who are sick or homebound. Please call the rectory to make arrangements. Baptism Baptisms take place on the first and third Sundays of each month, except during Lent. Preparation meetings are held on the first Monday of every month for the parents of children who will be baptized. Arrangements can be made by calling the rectory. Marriage Couples wishing to be married should call the rectory to set up an appointment with one of the parish priests at least six months in advance of the desired wedding date. Anointing of the Sick Elderly parishioners, those in poor health or who are anticipating surgery can call the rectory to arrange to receive the sacrament of anointing.
