3 Pope Francis has described his vision of the Church as a field hospital in the middle of a terribly wounded world. The Church herself is populated by wounded and sinful members, but by God s grace she still serves as an instrument of healing and forgiving mercy. During Lent 2015, the Church in the Archdiocese of Chicago wants to bring the medicine of mercy not only to the Catholic faithful but also to anyone who stands in need of healing and forgiveness. How will we begin to do this? Second Weekend in Lent Across two days (Friday, February 27, and Saturday, February 28), the Church in Chicago will offer special opportunities for the celebration of the Sacrament of Penance, for prayers of healing, and for intercessory prayer for the gift of peace in our hearts, our families, our communities, and our world. We will extend an invitation not only to Catholics but to all people of good will to join us in our churches. Everyone is Invited Every human being lives with brokenness. Every human soul knows its fragility. In Chicago, we are more aware than ever of the wounds inflicted on our city and its people by violence, gangs, drugs, domestic abuse, child neglect, economic injustice, and a spirit of mistrust among people of different races, cultures, languages, and ways of life. The city begs for the mercy of God and for healing. And the Catholic Church in Chicago wants to be a field hospital where all people can find forgiveness through the medicine of God s mercy. In the name of God, the Church calls everyone to repentance. In a special way, the Church calls gang members to turn from violence, those who are addicted in any way to abandon the idolatry that addictions represent, those who have exploited others sexually or economically to affirm the dignity of others, those who have neglected family responsibilities to embrace those closest to them, those who have harbored anger or grudges or resentments to free themselves of these numbing burdens, and those who have forgotten God to return to the one who loves them and calls them home. Encounter God s Mercy This focused time to encounter the mercy of God in our lives is inspired by Pope Francis, who called the Church in Rome to a Festival of Forgiveness, an annual Lenten observance to embrace God s forgiveness and mercy. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, we join our Holy Father and local churches throughout the world in their observance of this graced opportunity. Watch this bulletin each week for further details. 4 Our Confirmation candidates will meet on Monday, February 2, from 6:30 7:45 pm in Waldron Hall for a presentation on Witnessing God in Your Life. Students from four local high schools will share their experiences of making the transition to high school, the ways they have grown since they left middle school, and how they continue to be active in their faith and continue service to others. Classes will meet at St. Giles, 1025 Columbian Avenue in Oak Park, on eight Thursday evenings from 6:30-8:30 pm on February 6, 13, 20 and 27 March 6, 13, 20 and 27. You must participate in all eight sessions. Confirmation will be celebrated on Thursday, April 30. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. As you review the work enabled by your contribution to the Annual Catholic Appeal, please reflect on God s gifts to you. He has given you all that you have. With these gifts, you are entrusted with responsibility. Your gifts to our parish, to the Archdiocese, and to the work of the Church throughout the world should be given in gratitude for the continuing gifts that God gives you. Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. Our combined gifts not only signify our gratitude to God, they fund a significant portion of the work of our Archdiocese. After our parish goal of $55,063 is reached in cash, 100% of any additional funds come back to our parish to help to fund our needs. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you that did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond to it, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend. 5 Valentines Day is fast approaching and reservations are pouring in for our 7 th annual Valentine Tea on February 14. The event will begin at 3:00 pm, and the cost is $20 payable in advance. This event is very popular because of the excellent food and camaraderie. Seating is limited, so call Noreen O Malley at by February 9 to reserve your spot. The Amen Stitching Group will resume its meetings on Wednesday, February 25, from 9:00 am to Noon. Please note the change in time. The St. Luke Athletic Committee congratulates the following winner of the 500 Club drawing: Thomas Nitti Thank you to all who have purchased memberships in the Club, the proceeds of which go directly to fund the school s athletic programs. Please remember the 37 immigrant detainees at the McHenry County Jail who have asked for our prayers this week. They are from Belize, Brazil, China, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Kenya, and Mexico. Pray that the outcomes will be positive for all of the detainees and their families.
