4 As vicar for our region, Bishop John Manz presided at last Saturday s 5:00 Mass and installation of Fr. John Szmyd as St. Luke s 10th pastor. Fr. Szmyd was an obvious choice, Bishop Mann remarked, because of the fondness that was apparent between him and St. Luke parishioners after his year here as associate pastor. Fr. John was also eager to listen to and learn from the people of St. Luke and share in the ups and downs that come with families of any size, Bishop Manz added. The Bishop s observation was heartily confirmed by three rounds of applause from the several hundred parishioners, family members, friends, colleagues, and neighboring pastors in church, as well as the accolades of many well wishers at the reception that followed. 4 WELCOME TO ST. 5 With our Holy Father Pope Francis back in Rome, the events of the past two weeks can easily be forgotten. But the challenges he brought to our attention must not be overlooked. The discussion should continue now at the local (parish) level, availing ourselves of our many prayer opportunities for the issues brought forth by Pope Francis. While there is new excitement over his writings on the care for the earth and in the Green Teams now forming within parishes to address environmental issues, we must renew our efforts in all issues facing the human family. October is a very beautiful fall month, full of celebrations of the saints, especially our patron St. Luke (Sunday, Oct. 18). During the Month of the Holy Rosary, we are encouraged to pray this popular prayer to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary and to again unite ourselves in the solidarity of prayer with the specific intentions of Respect Life Month / Respect Life Sunday and Domestic Violence Awareness Month (the purple bows around the church premises). The Synod on the Family opens in Rome today. The gathering includes 279 delegates from around the world, including our own Archbishop Blase Cupich and seven other prelates from the U.S. Let us pray for blessings upon all of their deliberations. Finally, a special word of thanks to all those who prayed together last Saturday at the pastor installation Mass with Bishop John Manz. Many commented that they had never experienced the installation of a new pastor. While the ceremony has existed for many years, the involvement of the parish consultative bodies (pastoral and finance councils) and the presentation of the symbols of a pastor s ministry were recent additions that teach us about the special relationship between a pastor and his flock. I am most grateful to all who were able to be there, and to those who spoke to me and wished me well beforehand because they were unable to attend; to the ministers at Mass; the parish organizations represented; the choirs and musicians; our office staff, who spent countless hours making arrangements; to those who planned the beautiful reception with delicious food and festive decor, and to all who set up and cleaned up afterwards. I received from the parish a beautiful framed photo of our St. Luke stained glass window which will be in a special place where I can reflect upon it and pray for all of you whenever I see it! Deo gratias, and thanks be to you! Fr. Szmyd Today, October 4, is Respect Life Sunday and the start of Respect Life Month. It is a great opportunity to explore the many issues confronting our society that deal with matters of life and death, such as the funding of Planned Parenthood, the growing fascination with assisted suicide, and widespread violence in homes and in the streets. Today more than ever, it is paramount that we learn all that we can about the precious gift that God gives us in life from conception to natural death. The theme of this year "Every Life Is Worth Living" is explored in more detail on the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops website under its Pro Life Secretariat. O E St. Luke is kicking off its own observance of Respect Life Month by distributing baby bottles for donations to Aid for Women at all of the Masses this weekend. St. Luke s Respect Life Committee invites everyone to take a baby bottle home and fill it with any loose change during the rest of October. The committee will collect the bottles at the Masses on the last weekend of this month. Your donations help support Aid for Women, which empowers women to choose life for themselves and their babies. This affiliate of Catholic Charities of Chicago provides a vast array of services to abortion -vulnerable women in need of counseling, pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, health insurance, baby items and furniture, food, clothing, and transportation. For 37 years, Aid for Women has mentored women throughout their pregnancies, encouraging them to keep up with their prenatal care, attend classes, and develop a plan for their own future and that of their child. It charges no fee and relies solely on the generosity of individuals and foundations to continue their vital presence at the only pregnancy resource center in downtown Chicago and four other sites, including one in Cicero. 6 October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month and also the Month of the Holy Rosary. St. Luke s Domestic Violence Outreach Ministry is inviting people of all faiths to come together for a Rosary Prayer Service tomorrow (Monday) at 7:30 pm in the church. This gathering offers our community the opportunity to join in prayer for the victims of domestic violence and for all of the social service and government organizations that assist and counsel domestic violence victims. Please invite your friends The Chicago Marathon on October 11 attracts nearly 40,000 runners from all over the world to run 26.2 miles through the streets of Chicago. It s a grueling distance requiring four months of training. To help runners safely and successfully cross the finish line, St. Luke Parish will offer a special blessing for Marathoners at the 5:00 pm Mass on the eve of the race next Saturday, October 10. Fr. Steven Bauer, who will also be out there running the course will lead the prayer of blessing. Please encourage any runners you know to come and receive the spiritual edge they need to as the Bible says persevere in running We do NOT want a Church that will move WITH the world. Chesterton In response to the Pope s recent encyclical on the environment, and his visit to our country during which he emphasized the need to protect Earth, Our Common Home, the time is ripe for establishing a Green Team at St. Luke to advise our pastor, the parish staff, and parish committees on how to make our parish greener. Because of the importance that Archbishop Cupich gives to the Pope Francis call to be better stewards of God s gifts to us, the Archdiocese of Chicago is providing training for parish Green Teams at Ascension Church in Oak Park on Sunday, October 18, from 1:30 to 3:30 pm. This is an opportune moment for anyone to come in on the ground level of St. Luke s new Green Team. The team is open to all those in the parish who are interested in answering the call from Pope Francis and Archbishop Cupich, and we would like to draw representatives from diverse backgrounds, including teenagers, parents, and senior citizens. LUKE River Forest, IL Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is scaling up its response to the migrant crisis in the Mideast as conflicts, civil strife, and economic conditions in this part of the world have dramatically increased the flow of refugees. With the Syrian conflict entering its fifth year, millions of desperate families are attempting extremely perilous journeys toward Europe. Harrowing stories have emerged of death, starvation, and abuse at the hands of smugglers. An estimated 59.4 million refugees are suffering displacement and death. St. Luke will take up a second collection for this humanitarian emergency at all of the Masses on the weekend of October Please pray now for peace in the Middle East, and consider donating generously to help CRS strengthen its response to the migrant and refugee crisis that impacts us all.

7 All 7 th graders who are preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation at St. Luke and their parents are invited to an orientation meeting for the Mercy Experience Year in Waldron Hall tomorrow night (Monday) from 7:00-8:30 pm. The Blessed Sacrament Food Pantry, which is located on the lower level of The Learning Center, reports that its reserves are very low. St. Luke has been helping the food pantry serve individuals and families needing assistance in North Lawndale and Little Village for many years. It s very easy to help out: Just bring your donations to Mass on Sunday and place them in the baskets at the back of church. We take care of the rest. In addition to non-perishable food, the items that are needed most are personal care items that cannot be purchased with food stamps, such as: Diapers, hand soap, toothpaste, toilet paper, wipes & tissues Non-perishable food items that are most needed are: Cereal (hot or cold) Coffee and tea Peanut butter Pasta and rice Canned veggies, fruits, and beans Canned soups and stews Cash donations are also always appreciated., since they can be used to buy fresh vegetables and fruit, eggs, and meat, when available, from the Chicago Food Depository. 8 Loyola Medicine Hospice is offering small group support for adults who have lost a child over the age of 18 starting October 15. The group will meet from 6:00-7:30 pm for six weeks. Fifteen percent of sales from customerdesignated purchases will go to the CRS Fair Trade Fund, which benefits artisans and farms overseas. Because the feast of St. Luke, the Evangelist falls on a Sunday this year (October 18), our parish will celebrate our patron saint at all of our weekend Masses, praying through his intercession. The Catholic Physicians Guild of Chicago invites all those interested in promoting a culture of life to attend its annual St. Luke s Day Mass at 11:00 am on October 18 at Holy Name Cathedral. The real-life star of the hit movie Dead Man Walking is coming for two gatherings with youths and adults on Saturday, October 17, at St. Catherine of Siena- St. Lucy Church, 38 N. Daniel, Director of the Center on Wrongful Convictions at Northwestern University, on issues surrounding the debate on capital punishment. 9 During the third week of September, the one-to-one ipad Program was again rolled out for the 3 rd grade classes at St. Luke Parish School. This is the second year that teachers and students have used these great tools to support teaching and learning. The ipads offer opportunities for research and building reading and math comprehension and skills, as well as for keeping up with current events. We are looking forward to another year of exploring with technology with our 3 rd graders. Save the DATE! Watch the bulletin for additional information in coming weeks. Our 8 th graders have come to discover that force varies with mass and change of speed. How did they learn that? By bowling! In their science class, the students have begun the study of physics and are learning all about forces and motion. Any of our 8 th graders should be able to tell you the difference between distance and displacement, the difference between a scalar quantity and a vector quantity, and (here on Earth) what the acceleration due to the force of gravity is. Our 8 th grade students should be very well prepared when they move on to high school. Who knows maybe we have a future engineer or scientist in our midst! Almost 400 St. Luke School students will be streaming down the streets and sidewalks of River Forest this Friday for their annual Walk-a-Thon fundraiser. Today s tuition covers about 84% of the total school operations, so the donations raised in the Walk-a- Thon help tremendously to fill the tuition gap for all students. Watch for them and their brightly colored Open Sessions Tuesdays & Thursdays 9:00-10:45 am in Waldron Hall (Please enter through School Door 1) All children from birth to 3 years old, along with a parent or caregiver, are welcome to join us for fun and friendship during the school year. 10 The Prime Timers October event will be Tales of the Tombstones, a special tour of Forest Home Cemetery on Des Plaines and Roosevelt Roads on Sunday, October 18. Several famous musicians and songwriters are buried in the cemetery, so the theme will be Music of the Dead. Costumed guides will sing and regale us with tales of the deceased. This event is sponsored by the Oak Park-River Forest Historical Society annually and is quite popular. The cost is $10 for Historical Society members and $15 for non-members, payable at the door. We will meet at the main gate of the cemetery at 12:30 pm for our tour, which will last almost two hours. We are arranging a late lunch in Forest Park after the tour. Please call Beth McBride at to reserve a spot, and let her know if you need a ride to the cemetery. Also, please remember to save the date of Sunday, December 13, for the Misericordia Brunch!
