LUKE River Forest, IL FROM THE PASTOR We pray it together every Sunday, and we say we believe it as part of the Creed: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life. Who proceeds from the Father and the Son. Who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified. Who has spoken through the prophets. This Sunday as we celebrate the finale of the Easter Season of 50 days, we honor the foundation of the Church at Pentecost when a community of witnesses, of faith, was brought together in the name of the Risen Lord. They were inspired by the Advocate, the helper Jesus had promised them before his ascension to heaven, and the Holy Spirit would endow them with gifts unknown to them in prior times. They were given courage to preach, strength to do good works, wisdom to discern good from bad; and all with the purpose of bringing others to Christ. For this year s 8 th graders and the rest of us confirmed long ago, Pentecost is an opportunity to implore the help of the Holy Spirit in our lives through our prayer at Mass, to seek renewal in our relationship with Christ, and to be re-centered on the path of discipleship once again. This is what makes this solemn feast applicable to our lives and relevant for us to depend not on selfreliance but on a Spirit-filled reliance on God instead. As we consider personal renewal in the Holy Spirit, I bring your attention to a two-page article by Archbishop Cupich in this bulletin that speaks about renewal in the life of the Church throughout the entire Archdiocese of Chicago. The Archbishop explains the Renew My Church initiative in its entirety. Please read his article carefully because he explains his vision for the local Church and what we are facing. It is especially important that we keep in mind it is the same Holy Spirit guiding our Church and who will continue to guide it in new and challenging times. The same Holy Spirit continues to call people to all kinds of service. In this season of sacraments, upcoming graduations and marriages, ordinations to both the diaconate and the priesthood, let us give thanks to God who continues to call others to their life vocations. This weekend our focus in gratitude is with Sister Colleen Nolan, OP, as we joyfully celebrate the 50 years of service she has given to the Church from the time she professed her vows. We all see her love for Christ lived out in so many, many ways but especially in how she cares and educates the young people entrusted to her and those who assist her in teaching the faith. 5 Golden Jubilee This year is a double celebration for Sister Colleen Nolan, OP. It is the 50 th Anniversary of her Profession of Vows with the Sinsinawa Dominican Congregation of Sisters, who are based in southwestern Wisconsin. It also is the worldwide 800 th Anniversary of the foundation of her religious order, the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), which is represented by the Pentecostal flame. The daughter of the late Tom and Elizabeth Dede Nolan, Sr. Colleen grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, and joined the Sinsinawa Dominicans right after high school. Her life-long ministry has been dedicated to education as a teacher, in children s ministry and religious education, and with mission education. Sr. Colleen s ministry spanned four states. She taught school at St. James in Rockford, Illinois; St. Rose of Lima in Baltimore, Maryland; SS. Peter & Paul in Kingfisher, Oklahoma; and Sacred Heart in Lake Worth, Florida. She served as children s ministry director at St. Mary in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Sr. Colleen taught at St. Barnabas and St. Basil Schools. She served as co-director and director of the Apostolic Volunteers for the Sinsinawa Dominican Congregation from and as mission educator for the Missionary Society of St. Columban from She has been director of religious education and coordinator of sacrament formation at St. Luke Parish since 2011, and we are very pleased to be honoring this great milestone in her service to the Church and to our own community today. Thank you, Sister, on behalf of the thousands of children at St. Luke and across the country, whose lives you have touched with deep love for and dedication to Jesus and the fervor of the Holy Spirit. To schedule Masses, please complete the Mass Intention Request Form, which is available in the racks near all the church doors. All requests will be scheduled in the order received. Five Masses per person will be accepted initially. 7 A national survey of children between the ages of 10 and 16 living in economically depressed communities revealed that more than half of the children had been victims of violence. At the same time, a study by the National Council on Crime and Delinquency found that the most important factor in predicting criminal behavior on the part of teenagers was whether they had been victims of crime. In short, hurt people hurt people. All you have to do is listen to the news or read a newspaper to know that Chicago needs viable solutions for reducing youth and young adult violence which leads to a never ending cycle of repeated harm to the community and incarceration of youth and young adults. Relying exclusively on punishment for crime and removing those who commit crimes from society for a period of time has not worked. Millions of dollars are spent on warehousing criminals without restoring what has been harmed in the community where the crimes occurred or returning those who commit the crimes as productive members of the community. Because hurt people hurt people, the cycle of violence begetting violence continues unabated. In April of this year, the Chief Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County, Timothy C. Evans, announced the creation of a Restorative Justice Community Court to be located in North Lawndale in early St. Luke has had a long-term sharing relationship with North Lawndale that started in the late 60s with support for Blessed Sacrament Parish and continues today with St. Agatha Parish. The Restorative Justice Community Court will hear the cases of community residents, ages 18 to 26, who have committed nonviolent crimes. This is a pilot program established by the U.S. Department of Justice, and it will serve a projected 100 defendants a year. It is one part of a multi-pronged community effort at establishing restorative justice in North Lawndale. Restorative justice strives to address three critical questions: 1) How can communities best support positive outcomes for court and gang-involved youth and young adults? 2) How can communities best share responsibility for neighborhood safety? 3) How can our justice resources be most effectively reinvested in communities where youth and young adult violence is most concentrated. Restorative justice recognizes that crime harms relationships in the community, and it brings together the people most impacted by the crimes to restore the relationships impaired by the crimes. In a Restorative Justice Community Court, defendants take accountability for their actions and then work to repair the harm done. This may involve, for example, restitution, community service, letters of apology, and peace circles. Peace circles are an integral part of restorative justice as they bring together defendants, victims, family members, and others affected by crime in the community to listen to each other. In addition to the court, the North Lawndale Community Restorative Justice Hub has been established to bring together organizations in the community to work for restorative justice. The Hub network provides hospitable spaces for youth and young adults, accompaniment of youth in their journey, relationship building with youth and families, relentless engagement of organizations and resources for the youth and families, and collaboration with other communities that have successful restorative justice programs. 8 Mary A Celebration Honoring Our Blessed Mother There s nothing like a family gathering for Mother s Day, including the parish family which gathered last Saturday for a Pack the Pews Mass and an evening of dinner and activities honoring the mother that Jesus gave us all, the Blessed Virgin Mary. Thanks to the hard work of the St. Luke Women s Club, this has become a popular event. This year was highlighted by a cupcake rosary (you ve never seen children this excited about a rosary before!) and lots of flowers adorning the various images of Mary from around the world. 9 The Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) is seeking four new members to begin serving three-year terms this June. Our Parish Council is designed to counsel the pastor as we grow as a community and in Jesus Christ. This is an exciting time to serve on the PPC! We will be implementing outcomes from Parish Transformation, working on the To Teach Who Christ Is Campaign, and implementing new initiatives to build the community and vitality of our parish. We are also forming four committees to enhance communication with our Ministries, and each PPC member will serve on one of these committees: Spiritual Life Catholic Education Human Concerns Parish Life We seek parishioners who want to be actively involved and are willing to delve deep into pastoral matters. We are looking for individuals who are able to listen to differing opinions, integrate varied points of view, and discern with others what is best for the parish. Each member allocates, on average, 1-2 hours a week to PPC matters. The members attend meetings once a month from September to June. They are also asked to attend occasional ministry meetings within their committees and accept other assignments as needed. As mentioned, they commit to a 3-year term. Being on Parish Council is a privilege and an inspiring experience. We work with wonderful parishioners. We grow in our faith through service to the parish and by working with our wonderful priests. We pray and celebrate together. There will be a general information meeting in Waldron Hall tomorrow night (Monday) at 7:00 pm. Please reach out to Fr. John or Linda Binder if you are interested. Communion Visits and Ministry of Care A parish priest or Minister of Care will be happy to visit those who are sick or homebound. Please call the rectory to make arrangements. Baptism Baptisms take place on the first and third Sundays of each month. Preparation meetings are held on the first Monday of every month for the parents of children who will be baptized. Arrangements can be made by calling the rectory. Marriage Couples wishing to be married should call the rectory to set up an appointment with one of the parish priests at least six months in advance of the desired wedding date. Anointing of the Sick Elderly parishioners, those in poor health or who are anticipating surgery can call the rectory to arrange to receive the sacrament of anointing.
