In the background stands St. Paul, who called St. Luke the beloved physician (Colossians 4:14). WELCOME TO ST. LUKE River Forest, IL FROM THE PASTOR As our parish celebrates its patron, St. Luke, on Wednesday (October 18), we pray in several ways: with a special blessing for all those with a calling to the medical and health-related fields at the 9:00 Mass, the Sacrament of Anointing for all those seeking healing graces at 11:00 Mass, and finally in anticipation of spending some time together as a parish at the LukeFest Block Party next Saturday, October 21, after 5:00 Mass. If you are accustomed to attending Mass on Sunday, please stop by on Saturday evening as well for the festivities. I was overjoyed when the chairs of our Women s Club approached me with the idea to sponsor this event. It is a lot of work, but it must afford great satisfaction to all who work to make it a success, knowing that it brings the entire parish together in such a joyful way. It is a wonderful opportunity for us to grow together as a parish. Please pray for good weather! The Renew My Church initiative that is continuing now across the Archdiocese of Chicago is a call for all of us to work on increasing parish life in a variety of ways while evangelizing others by spreading the Gospel. If we hope to have parishes that grow, welcome, and bring new people to Christ, we all must agree that we are part of this major effort. These are the seven key responsibilities we are all ON for: 1) Work at bringing others to Christ 2) Strive to know Christ more fervently 3) Receive hope and strength through prayer and worship 4) Build bonds with each other that help sustain our life in Christ 5) Transform the lives of others through service 6) Respond to the call to holiness by journeying with Christ 7) Become good stewards of the gifts with which we have been blessed We ve all heard statistics of how many people have fallen away from the faith, including many teens and young adults. This is a most difficult age in which we live. But if we encourage, invite, and offer a message of hope if we encourage our young ones to be with us if we recognize and appreciate when they do join us, perhaps they will leave Mass with a reinvigorated faith that gives them the meaning they are seeking in their lives, which no other earthly source can satisfy. Many adults have learned this life lesson through experience so share your wisdom with a young person today! Granted that young people have many activities in which they can participate during their high school and college years, parish life is especially enriched by those in a relationship with Christ who serve and give of themselves as ministers at Mass, as cantors, or greeters. You are invited! Join us serve others in Christ and make a difference! The Church needs you! ~Fr. Szmyd

3 Although St. Luke the Evangelist had a very important role in Church history as one of the four Gospel writers, very little is known with absolute certainty about the man who shaped large parts of our understanding of Jesus and the early Church. It is generally agreed among scholars that Luke: was born to Gentile parents at Antioch in Syria became the first Christian physician was not one of the original 12 Apostles, and therefore never saw Jesus authored the Gospel According to Luke and The Acts of the Apostles was a frequent companion of St. Paul on his journeys through Asia Minor and Paul s final stop in Rome died some years after St. Paul s martyrdom It is St. Paul who revealed Luke s profession as a beloved physician in his letter to the Colossians (4:14). The importance of Luke s medical background becomes apparent from the very beginning of his Gospel when he describes his thorough scrutiny of all the stories he heard from Paul and possibly the Blessed Mother and some of the Apostles. After investigating everything accurately, Luke says he is writing the Gospel in an orderly sequence so his followers could trust the certainty of the teachings you have received. As one author describes it, Luke is the story of Jesus Christ exactly as it happened. Indeed, Luke gives us the longest and most extensive of the four Gospels. He provides details from Jesus life that are not found elsewhere, including six miracles and 18 parables not found in the other Gospels. He alone gives us details about the Blessed Mother, including two of our most revered prayers: the Hail Mary and Magnificat. And, again fitting with his medical outlook, Luke s Gospel has the largest number of Jesus healing miracles. Some historians suggest that Luke s non-hebrew led him to focus his gospel with special emphasis on Jesus role as savior of the marginalized and outcasts of society: the sick, the poor, women, and Gentiles. For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost (Luke 19:10). As a Gospel writer, Luke is most often illustrated with a pen and book as well as the icon of a winged ox or calf. Just as Luke s Gospel opens and closes with scenes from the temple, so the ox symbolizes Christ s priestly and sacrificial ministry in the Gospel; the wings represent the spread of the Gospel throughout the world. He also is often shown with a painter s easel, as legend suggests that he painted the first image of the Blessed Mother. On rare occasion, however, St. Luke is also shown with the Rod of Asclepius or the caduceus (the staff with one or two serpents) which has symbolized the medical profession since ancient Greek times. Indeed you can find the caduceus along with the artist s palette and the book and pen carved in the stone above our church s entrance. While Luke is considered the patron of a long list of occupations artists, bachelors, bookbinders, brewers, butchers, glass makers, goldsmiths, lacemakers, notaries, painters, stained glass workers, and students it is his designation as patron of doctors and surgeons that we focus on today as we offer a blessing at the 9:00 Mass for all those working in the medical field as well as the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick at the 11:00 Mass for those seeking strength and healing in Christ in the same tradition that St. Luke described so many centuries ago. As we prepare to celebrate St. Luke s feast day this Wednesday, October 18, we ask for our parish patron s intercession in heaven: St. Luke, pray for us. 5 A half dozen local runners took advantage of the special blessing Fr. John offered at the 5:00 Mass last Saturday on the eve of the Chicago Marathon. No word on how our marathoners did, but they had a beautiful day for the 26.2-mile race. Everyone is invited to a special Mass at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 4, to remember all of our friends and relatives who have died over the past year. The families and friends of recently deceased individuals have told us they find great consolation in having our entire community join them in celebrating the lives of all those who have gone on to eternal life with Christ. ABOUT: For more than 30 years, the Peace and Justice Committee has strived to move social justice and peace issues from the fringes of parish life to a frontline, integral part of our parish s life. WHAT WE DO: We educate ourselves through reflection on the scripture and its call to work for justice, through prayer, and by studying the numerous pastoral statements of the Popes and Bishops. We then move from prayer and study to planning programs for our parish and organizing action on justice issues that confront our parish, our local communities, our state, our nation, and the world. MEMBERSHIP: All parishioners interested in social justice issues are welcome to join the committee. TIME COMMITMENT: The group meets on the second Monday of each month, from September to June, from 7:30 to 9:00 pm in the Hospitality House. ARE YOU INTERESTED? If you re interested in learning more, contact Terry Norton at or Tony Graefe at There are so many problems in our world that need fixing, but our committee just keeps chipping away at the issues that concern our community and Chicago. We ve learned a great deal from our book discussions about mass incarceration in this country and what we should know about Islam. Some of our members get involved with demonstrations against gun deaths by standing on the street with candles and praying for an end to violence over at St. Edmund s. Others tutor at The Learning Center. And now we re preparing to fix a meal for the Housing Forward shelter. This group has gotten so many good things started through the years. I m glad St. Luke has this group. ~Gail Hafner OCTOBER 15, 2017 Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time 7
