Who can argue with the fact that he visualizes things with the mind and heart of Christ, showing us how to be a Church of mercy especially as we ourselves seek unity and healing in our own lives and as we try to help bring our brothers and sisters in Christ to the same realization of how much they too, need Christ Jesus in their lives. The great gift of the Church, the sacraments, is our most direct contact with the mystery of the Risen Lord Jesus Christ and the primary means by which we enter into His life. The strategic focus throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago in rightfully is on the sacraments of the Church. Each weekend since July 6, in One Word at a Time, a short piece in our bulletin has generally explained what the sacraments are or served as a point of departure for a renewed understanding and interest in them. For those of you who might have been away on vacation, you may get on board with the entire program simply by scanning the past bulletins since the beginning of July at our parish website, which will enable you to see how everything fits together. With this weekend, the more general focus of the past two months will be ending. Each subsequent month until June of 2015, will be devoted to a different sacrament or sacramental ritual in the life of the Church. The month-by-month plan is not in the chronological order of how we ordinarily receive the sacraments but rather is an attempt to tie together important sacramental times in parish life. On one Sunday each month, a special homily will offer catechesis on the featured sacrament. An insert to the bulletin will also be provided. Hopefully, this will give us some points for reflection or inspiration as we consider what the sacraments mean to us. Our first special homily will be next weekend, September 13-14, and will focus on the Eucharist. May the Lord bless us and guide us throughout this Year of the Sacraments. 4 Save the Date for St. Luke s Annual Parish Block Party! Saturday, September 13, after the 5:00 Mass Food, beverages, treats, and music loads of fun for the entire family! Come celebrate with your fellow parishioners. All parishioners are encouraged to attend. This fun event is organized by the St. Luke Men s Club. Today at the 9:00 am Mass our wonderful catechists for the coming year will be commissioned for their important ministry work with our children. The theme for this year is Teaching About God s Gift of Forgiveness. This is a day on which to celebrate and pray for the Church s mission to teach the Gospel to all people. Our catechists are responding to this call to share the gift of faith with others, even as they deepen their own faith. Religious Education families are invited to Waldron Hall from 10:00 am to Noon for refreshments, Book Pick-Up, and session assignments for those who registered by September 1. This is an opportunity to pay tuition, meet the catechists, and sign up to volunteer for our Family Fall Fun Fest, which will be celebrated on Sunday, October 26! We want your children to be prepared for the start of the sessions this week. Those who registered late may pick up their books Monday, September 8. Religious Education Sessions begin Wednesday, September 10, for Kindergarten Grade 4 from 3:30-4:30 pm and for Grades 5 8 from 6:30-7:30 pm. Share the Blessings St. Luke is blessed with an active music program whose members enhance our liturgical assemblies with their musical talents. The various music groups also offer the opportunity for their members to form a community in which they really care about and support one another. Each group is always open to new membership, and I invite you to consider participating in one or more of them as we start the new season. If you would like to become involved, please call me at the rectory for more information. Arlene Michna, Director of Music Amichna@stlukeparish.org Chancel Choir: This choir sings at the 10:30 am Mass from September through early June, and practices on Wednesdays from 7:15-9:00 pm. The choir sings a variety of music, and singers in all vocal ranges are welcome. Contemporary Choir: This choir specializes in music of contemporary composers and sings at the 9:00 am Mass from September through early June. It rehearses on Tuesday evenings from 7:30-9:00 pm. Cantors: At Masses where there is no choir, cantors lead our congregational singing, and sing the verses of the Psalm and the Gospel Acclamation. Cantors have a group rehearsal once a month on Monday at 7:00 pm. Individual rehearsals are scheduled at the cantor s request. Handbell Choir: This group, made up of 5 th through 8 th grade students, rehearses in the church on Wednesdays from 4:30-5:30 pm. The Handbell Choir often plays for the monthly Family Mass and the 4:00 pm Christmas Eve Mass. Parish Children s Choirs: Our children s choirs sing once a month at the 9:00 am Family Mass from October through May, as well as at the 4:00 pm Mass on Christmas Eve. The Cherub Choir, grades 1-4, gathers in the Hospitality House on Thursdays for a snack and rehearsal from 3:00-4:15 pm. The Seraphim Choir, grades 5-8, gathers for refreshments and rehearsal on Wednesdays at 3:15 pm. 8 Tomorrow, Monday, is Bridge day for the Prime Timers. It is a fun afternoon from noon until 2:30 pm in the Hospitality House. The Stitching Group will also be meeting in the Hospitality House on Wednesday, September 10, from noon until 2:30 pm. Newcomers are always welcome to bring any kind of needlework. The Prime Timers next trip on Monday, September 15, will be a tour of Mundelein Seminary. We will leave the parish parking lot at 9:00 am.
