Wickowski All Souls Day This Saturday, November 2, is All Souls Day, a special time to remember our departed loved ones in prayer. Masses will be at 8:00 and 10:00 am. The 10:00 Mass will be a special time to remember parishioners who have died during the past 12 months. The families and friends of these recently deceased parishioners are specially invited to join in this Memorial Mass. Everyone is cordially invited to attend. Book of the Deceased Not only on All Souls Day but throughout the month of November, we offer our prayers for all the faithful departed, that they may be quickly brought into the fullness of eternal life with God in heaven. You are invited to write the names of relatives and friends who have died since last November in our Book of the Deceased, which is located near the pulpit. May this book be a visual reminder to keep all our departed loved ones in our prayers. Let Us Pray... Lord Jesus, you welcome into your kingdom all those who do your Father s will, and say to them, Come to me, all you who labor and are overburdened, and I will give you rest. We pray for our loved ones, family and friends, who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. (Pause here to mention those whom you wish to remember.) Into your hands, O Lord, we humbly entrust them. In this life you embraced them with your tender love; deliver them now from every evil and bid them enter eternal rest. Father, welcome them into paradise where there will be no sorrow, no weeping nor pain, but the fullness of peace and joy with your Son and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen. Coat Drive Our annual Learning Center Coat Drive begins Saturday, November 2, and continues until Noon Mass on Sunday, November 10. Adult-sized winter coats are needed for Learning Center students at Blessed Sacrament. Attendance is improved when the students can stay warm on their daily walk to and from school. The collection box will be at the Lake Street entrance to the Church. All donations are warmly appreciated. First Friday Coffee and... All Saints Day This Friday, November 1, is All Saints Day, a Holy Day of Obligation. Masses on Friday will be at 6:30, 8:00, and 9:15 am (with our school children) and 7:00 pm. This feast is a joyous celebration of all the men and women of faith who have gone before us saints great and small. Let us take time and make time to worship on this feast day. Our monthly First Friday Coffee and... will be this Friday, November 1, immediately after the 8:00 am Mass. Join us as we gather at the Hospitality House (the former Convent). Worth Seeing/hearing The Siena Center at Dominican University presents Leading from the Center: The Genius of Samuel Mazzuchelli on Tuesday, November 5, at 4:30 pm in Rosary Chapel, Mazzuchelli Hall, Main Campus. As we mark the sesquicentennial of The Venerable Fr. Samuel Mazzuchelli s death, Dominican University s founding Vice-President for Mission and Ministry, Sister Diane Kennedy, OP, DMin, considers Fr. Samuel s visionary leadership in higher education, and the demands his legacy makes on us today. Admission is free. Turn in Your Baby Bottle The Respect Life Committee is collecting the Aid for Women baby bottles distributed at all the Masses during Respect Life Sunday Weekend. Please bring your bottle to an usher at any of the Masses. Thank you for taking a bottle and filling it with your loose change during October. 6 Eight Ways to Pray With Your Kids With good prayer modeling and good experiences of prayer, children can experience God just as surely as adults. (Jean Marie Weber) 1. Pray Always... Prayer is something that can be done at all times, not just in church or at the dinner table: when you find out someone is sick, when you listen to the news, when you see God s abundance all around, before a test or a ball game, and don t forget to say a prayer of thanks when prayers are answered. 2. Use Concrete Examples... Use objects as reminders of our faith such as pictures, story books, a bible, a crucifix or things that are meaningful to the family member such as a candle, a rock, or a statue. 3. Stick to a Routine... Prayer can become an important part of everyone s day: grace before meals, prayers before bedtime, blessings on special occasions. 4. Keep Things Moving... Play upbeat gospel or Christian music (radio or CD player) and let children move and dance to the music, take a walk and pray a prayer of praise for creation, incorporate action into your quiet prayer by passing a candle or bible to each person or asking each person to read a line of a psalm. 5. Go to Church... From an early age, children recognize the importance of Mass in the life of the family. Bring religious picture books to Mass, practice the sign of peace at home, play church music at home or sing the songs from Mass, take a walking tour of church and talk about the statues and stained glass windows, even the stations of the cross, encourage the children to take part in the collection. 6. Make Jesus the In Thing... Read together stories of Jesus and the saints, allow children to arrange the Nativity set in your home (or purchase one just for them), borrow or purchase videos and DVDs with a Christian focus. 7. Help Youth Pray, Too... Invite them to set up your prayer space, encourage them with books and journals appropriate for their age, give them a Catholic Youth Bible, allow them to choose the Mass time that better suits them. 8. Be Flexible... Help family members be respectful and reverent during prayer times, but also be flexible and patient. One family gathered for their annual Christmas tree blessing. A child took the vial of holy water and began to bless the tree with what was actually a small vial of bubbles. 7 Saint Luke School News Sacrament Preparation A Trip Back in Time On Tuesday, October 22, fourth grade teachers took their students on a trip back in time when they visited Naper Settlement in Naperville. There they explored the 19 th century village and heard stories of life in the community at that time. This experience provided a visual link to what the students have been learning in language arts, science, and social studies this trimester. Eighth grade Confirmation Candidates gathered on Monday, October 21, with Mrs. Bridget Sperduto, Director of The Well. She engaged these young people in many activities in which they must make moral decisions every day. Love is the answer and God is calling these candidates to look at their lives and ways they can live out their baptismal call. Mrs. Sperduto encouraged these young people to be the face of God love and light in the world. Some beautiful actions were, I will not whisper. I will include everyone and show my love by words and actions. Do what s right for everyone and not just what s right for me. Please continue to journey in prayer with our Confirmation Candidates. Prayers for Military Personnel As the war in Afghanistan continues, let us pray that all our military personnel may be kept safe from harm and return safely home to their loved ones. We pray especially for SGT Joshua J. Strickland and LCDR Landon L. Jones, who died recently. May they rest in peace.
